2 KOGHKILO BOYERAHMAD: is the cradle of the Sharveh, a significant vocal genre now in Bushehr city. The genre was imported by migrating workers. KHUZESTAN: many migrating workers were settling the area for oil employment. They fled to the south during war and spread a cross-over culture, feat dances of their former mountainous regions and the related arrangements for shawms and neyanban bagpipe. DASHTESTAN plains are settled by migrants from Khuzestan and Zagros. They respectively imported their neyanban and Tchopi genres (sorna, dohol). The region is also famous for the Dashti e Dashtestan, an ancient vocal genre of the shepperds. KHARGH island: few African born slaves have been perpetuating the Liwa transe genre. They featured the Zehmari shawm (Zanzibar), and other footed drums from Tanganyika. BUSHEHR city : gathers sailors genres and influences of the migrants from Gulf, Yemen and Africa. They adopted the Sharveh as a major lyrical genre. Damam is the main drum Shiite celebrations. Some others featured the morbas, (ar.. marwas), an avatar of the kuweiti-yemeni marwas drum dedicated there for the Sawt genre -.

4 ESKELE : Basically Bandar Bushehr city was a fishermen s harbour, and still is.

6 Lately, a persian Shah undertook in the mid-18th century raising the city as a commercial business place possibly slave business as well -, and quite succeeded The fishermen s village rose to a commercial city, & became then for a while a wanted place for european traders.

7 Unlike other harbours in Iran, the dominant religion in Bushehr is shiite Islam. Some few inhabitants are sunni too. The ethnical mixity highlights the commercial history of the city, and also numerous refugees from Khorramshahr, Abadan,

9 Neverthless, the city is famous for its religious folklore, especially in the occasions of the mourning celebrations of Muharram (Ashura, Tasua). Their ritual is a subtle mix of widespread persian shiite ones and afro-arab heritage.

10 Here drummers of the Masjid Emam Khomeyni are setting the skin of the sacred damam Drum before celebrations. Damam is presumately african heritage and this embodies the cross over identity of the inhabitants. As this is only performed for religious occasions, this drum is held as a sacred one.

12 HOT & LOUD. Unlike other cities, Tasua / Ashura and Qadr occasions are celebrated from midnight in Bushehr. Celebrations used to be introduced by a 30 min instrumental parade in the close neighbourhood of each of the old Bushehr s mosques. These hotspicy, short parades are the glory instant of vigorous Damam drummers. Here Masjid Sheikh Sadon a.k.a. Kuti.

13 Damam-drummed parades are polyrythmic ensembles, accompanied by loud zeng cymbals and boork horn. The resulting beats sounds like a fast steamtrain. Drum ensemble is led by a troupe manager and a solo lead-drum (ashkoun damam, see front). Here Masjid Emam Khomeyni.

14 OUT OF TIME. In spite of the fame of damam drums, the hululating boork horn is the undisputed unique experience of the parade for new comers. Here in Behbaniyeh mosque.

16 HOSEINIYYEH at least the small parade enters the Hoseiniyyeh and introduces the next coming Sinezani stage. From that stage, the celebration may become as sad as a mourning is supposed to be in the usual shiite rite. Here in Masjid sheikh Sadon a.k.a. Kuti

17 SINEZANI (BREAST BEATING) this is the religious peak of the celebration. Bushehri nohekhaneh are quiet talentful, as their Nohe usually sound less compassionate than others in Iran, but much more melodious. In Bushehr, participants perform a circle movement, same as reported before in Bandar Qeshm. Here in Masjid Sadon a.k.a Kuti.

18 MEALS Every ceremonies are supported with shared meals, as here cooked in Masjid Emam Khomeyni.

19 DAYLIGHTS On the next day (here Ashura day in Emam Khomeyni mosque), the same Damam drummed parade is performed again in the midafternoon, as an introduction of the usual Marassem parade. Amazingly they start it about 2 hours after the official mourning hour of Kerbala Battle in the rest of the Shiite world i.e. 4 PM.

20 MOURNING PARADE the only usual mourning parade in Bushehr is actually the coffin s parade, and alams standards used to forecome the group. Here in Lityan Street, near Davani mosque.

21 Every parades then join together in Enqelab square and return then back to their attached mosque. There they perform the widespread final sinezani.
