The air is getting cooler, and the days are getting shorter. Can Thanksgiving be far behind? Growing up, Thanksgiving was a wonderful family holiday. We would all gather at my grandmother s house around one huge table as one big family. My grandmother made the best homemade custard I have ever experienced. She always served it in these fine crystal glasses that would absolutely sing when you ran your finger around the edges. It was truly a day of Thanksgiving to God for God s many blessings. My mom would sit at the Grand Piano as we sang wonderful hymns of Thanksgiving. Every Thanksgiving, I give thanks for those memories as well as many more from then till now. But I am also very careful not to spend all my time in the past. I pause and give thanks for all my blessings today. Growing up, I remember singing the old hymn in church, Count your many blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings, see what God hath done. Count your blessings, name them one by one. And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done. I am very grateful this Thanksgiving to be serving as your Interim Transitional Pastor. I am so excited about the future God has planned for Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church. Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church is filled with hope and love. This year, in the midst of all the negative news on TV and in the newspaper, may we take time to count our many blessings, it will surprise us what the Lord has done. Yours in Christ, Ron Page 1

2 Session at Work Deacon Report Did the young ghosts and goblins eat you out of house and home this past weekend or did having the holiday in the middle of the week slow the barrage of these monsters to your home? With the beautiful leaves still on the trees, it is hard to believe we are quickly planning for Thanksgiving. Whether or not we are able to spend more time with family, they are in our hearts and prayers. We all think of our church families as well. Blue Ridge Presbyterian has a fine history with Faith Presbyterian Church. As most know, the foundation for membership of Faith came from the congregation of Blue Ridge. Unfortunately, the end of this year will be the end of Faith Presbyterian has had to make the tough decision to close its doors. Unfortunately, their membership has been in steady decline for years. The last large event at the church will be the Thanksgiving service for Faiths of Raytown at 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 18. As usual, this service will benefit REAP and allows us to give our thanks and show our support for their dedication. It will be the last occasion for us to support our friends at Faith. If you can attend, please bring donations for REAP. Here at Blue Ridge, we always have family to surround us. As with families, there is always work being done by our church family. I know the congregation would be amazed at the amount of work the Property Committee does to keep our building and grounds in good repair. The whole committee and other volunteers donate many hours. A few members include Bobby and Christi Neal and Gary Oberlander who give countless hours of their time. When you see members of the committee (they are listed on the back of the front page of the directory) be certain to give them a show of gratitude. They deserve it. You would have had to be living in a cave to not know there is an election soon. It can t be too soon to have all the ads, most of which have been negative removed from the air. Here at Blue Ridge we also are about to have an election but thank goodness we haven t had any negativity. On November 19, we will have a Called Congregational Meeting. After celebrating World Wide Communion on Sunday, October 7th several sets of deacons fanned out across the metro to bring communion to our homebound members. Ed and I had the pleasure of visiting Ann TeKolste. We had a great time reminiscing about our church bridge group now going strong after about 25 years and Ann, Ed and I were among the original players. We remembered many Blue Ridge stories and shared communion together. What a delightful afternoon and I m sure all the Deacon teams had similar experiences visiting their folks as well. This is just one aspect of the joy that comes back many times over when serving as a deacon. If you are approached please consider this awesome way to service our Lord and your church. Deacon, Sally Ingram The nominating committee will be presenting a slate of candidates for the offices of deacon and elder for the class of This year we will also be electing a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). The Nominating Committee will present a slate of candidates for this committee as well. As with any election within the church, nominations will be open to the floor. Anyone being nominated must have consented to be placed on the ballot. The nominating committee has carefully considered candidates for the PNC which represent the demographics of the congregation as close as possible. This committee is one of the most important one you will elect. They will be responsible for finding the right pastor to lead this church hopefully for many years to come. Carefully consider the candidates for this committee and keep them in your prayers that they may discern, with the help of the Holy Spirit as guidance, to find a great pastor for our church. 3 Christian Education 9 th -12 Grades faith journey will continue to be empowered by exploring life-shaping, thoughtprovoking, Jesus-centered truths that can transform them into the kind of people God crafted them to be. Discussions in October will focus on the topics Communicating in Love; Knit Together; Lord of the Vines SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR ALL at 9:30 AM. Come and and Treasures. join as we learn together and grow closer to God. Breakfast treats will be available at 9:15 AM. Adult Class will come together and continue the book study on James W. Moore s book Yes, Lord I Have K-4 th Grades will continue their study of Moses Sinned, but I Have Several Excellent Excuses. Classes learning about and gaining understanding of what will be led by Shelley Melewski, Charlie Chick and happened to the Israelites after they were freed from Mike Schumacher. Rev Dr. Ron Galvin will begin an Egypt. 4 PRAYING FOR YOU ALL SAINTS DAY Our church will honor and celebrate the lives of all who have passed in our BRPC family in the last year at a special remembrance during worship on Sunday, November 4. Please join us! PULPIT SUPPLY On Sunday, November 11, Pastor Ron and Sandy will be in Seattle for a wedding and a little sight-seeing. BRPC will be blessed to have Reverend Don Sears serve as our minister on that day. We look forward to his inspiring message, thoughtful insights, and humorous wit. POINSETTIA ORDERS You are invited to purchase a beautiful poinsettia (or two) to help decorate the sanctuary for our holiday worship services. Each plant will cost $12, as in years past, and the poinsettias may be purchased in remembrance or honor of loved ones. Orders will be taken October 28 through November 11. We will submit our final order to Farrand Farms on November 12. Purchased poinsettias may be taken home after each Christmas Eve service. Thank you in advance for helping provide added warmth and beauty to our sanctuary this holiday season. COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING SERVICE Please plan to join together with others in our Raytown community as we reflect upon our blessings and celebrate as one on Sunday, November 18 at 7 PM. The annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, just 20 blocks south of BRPC, at 8301 James A. Reed Road, here in Raytown. The event is sponsored by Faiths of Raytown (FoR), formerly the Raytown Interfaith Alliance. Canned goods and monetary contributions will be collected for the Raytown Emergency Assistance Program (REAP). The service will last under one hour, and refreshments will be served afterwards. Please see Christi Neal for more details. HANGING OF THE GREENS On Sunday, November 25, everyone is invited to help decorate our sanctuary, parlor, and entryways for the holiday season. We will plan to gather at approximately 12:15 after our time of fellowship. We will have a job for all ages. Thank you in advance for helping make BRPC festive in preparation of Advent and Christmas activities. CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES Advent and Christmas are just around the corner! Please make plans now with your family, friends, and neighbors to attend one or both of our beautiful candlelit Christmas Eve services. They will be held again at 4PM and 8 PM here at BRPC. Worship Committee members have already begun preparing special gifts for each person in attendance. Christmas Eve is a wonderful opportunity to invite friends, neighbors, and co-workers who do not have a church home. What better way to introduce or reintroduce them to the Savior than by celebrating the birth of the Lord? My husband and I used the facility you provided, so we understand why you could not sustain it, despite your many attempts to communicate to people how to recycle. Every time I recycled, I pulled nonrecyclables out, so as a person who is into doing things right, I was frustrated along with you. Being an environmentalist in our culture is trying, because people seem to want to feel good about making any effort, whether it is actually helpful or not. Anyway, we used your bin, and we appreciated it. Thank you. PRAYER CHAIN Calling for callers join our prayer chain. I m sure many of you are aware that we have an active group called the Calling Committee. This committee is especially important in keeping the congregation informed of illnesses and important information about family and friends. Most especially this is a request passed along for prayers of love and healing. Our plea right now is for additional ones to join our Prayer Chain. Your name will be put on a calling list. You will be called by the person ahead of you and then you in turn will call the person below you in the chain... only one call. 6 Finance Committee Budget YTD INCOME Actual YTD $153, $150, Budget YTD EXPENSES Actual YTD $153, $147, Income is less than budgeted, but expenses are less also thanks to all committees watching their expenses. We are in the middle of the Stewardship campaign & ask that you prayerfully consider your pledge so we can continue to maintain our many programs, upkeep of our sanctuary & the outside grounds that surround our beautiful place of worship. Peace & Grace, Sandy Moore Moderator of the Finance Committee. Fellowship Coffee Fellowship has become one of the most important parts of our Sunday s at BRPC. So, with this in mind, it might be a good idea to review the procedures for Coffee Fellowship. A monthly listing is always in the monthly newsletter plus in the weekly bulletin with two weeks in advance. If you see your name and find that you are unable to participate, please let the contact person or Connie Oliver know. The contact for that week should reach out to the people that are on the list for the week. 10:00 is the preferred arrival time as this gives time for set up and preparing the trays, making punch and getting the coffee ready. If you can, two or three need to come out after the offering and this will give you time to put the food and beverages out. You need a person to pour punch and another for coffee. While they are doing this someone can be in the kitchen starting the cleanup. By doing this everyone should be able to leave the church by 12:30 or sooner. There are always extending circumstances, but the key is COMMUNICATION!!!! Questions contact Debbie Jones or Connie Oliver Property Roof Replacement Property Committee has solidified details with our roofing contractor, Blue Rain Roofing and Restoration. Bids have been submitted to our insurance, by both the adjustor and roofing company. As soon as the finances are finalized, we will begin roof replacement. This will include all new gutters and flashing. It still appears that we may be able to have our entire roof replaced with minimal cost to BRPC. Once work begins, on the flat roof first, we anticipate approximately 2-3 weeks of labor. Please be advised that, at times, we will need to use only certain doors to access the building, as large equipment will be in place in portions of the parking lot. We will do our best to communicate changes and keep everyone apprised as work progresses. Thank you in advance for your patience and willingness to be flexible. Other Major Repairs Our committee has also begun soliciting bids for necessary restoration work on the sanctuary ceiling, once roof repairs are completed. Painting of the steeple, replacement of the elevator pipes in the bottom of the elevator shaft, and outside door replacement in the office are also projects that will be addressed. Building Security With recent rains, our outside doors do not always close completely. Please check that all doors securely close and lock AFTER exiting the building. Also, please check restroom lights, coffee pots, ovens, etc. Thank you! Building Request Forms Please remember to submit a building use request form for an event that is not regularly scheduled. Please check the wall calendar for conflicts and pencil in your event with pending. Please ask the office to help place items on the web calendar after approval, if you need assistance. Maintenance Needs/Concerns Please write any needs, issues, or concerns with the date and your name and place in Bobby Neal s mailbox. We may not be able to address everything at once, but we will do our very best to fix the problem. Thank you. Page 6

7 Grace Notes OWLS When I'm not feeling very good about my life circumstances in general these days, I know there is always a task that will set me right. It takes a little energy for me to get started and sometimes more than I have, but once started there is always enough strength to finish the exercise. I've discovered, after many others have reminded me, that this task will do more to set me right and make me feel better than nearly anything else I can do. I invite you, when you can find the energy, to carve out a small quiet space and rest a moment, breath a few deep breaths, let them out slowly and allow your mind to focus on that which you are most grateful. Give thanks for the obvious then using your imagination rise above your single spot and look around you for other people and blessings to give God thanks. I promise if you do this you will be more aware of God's presence which will not only make you feel better but make you a more pleasant person to be around. From the festive food to the peppy polka band, everyone had a wunderbar time at OWLS Oktoberfest Celebration on October 17th! If you want to take this exercise to the next level find a song to sing while giving thanks and you will surpass your greatest hopes. When we connect our breath with our spirit God has more space to move in our heart and mind. Give thanks to God with a full voice and breath and our bodies will open in new ways to God's being in this time and space. From a paraphrase of Psalm 40, "I waited patiently for God, for God to hear my prayer; and God bent down to where I sank and listened to me there." Knowing God is always present, may we quiet our heart in thanksgiving for the "Holy One of Israel." Grace November 21st Sign up in the narthex to join us for a traditional Thanksgiving feast followed by a time of fellowship and fun as we play an easy but entertaining card game called Italian Poker This game has nothing to do with Italy nor poker. Each table will have an experienced player to lead the game. December 19th we will have our Christmas dinner followed by a fun gift exchange loosely based on the right-left-center game we have played in the past with a few modifications from last year. Please bring a wrapped, gift - value not to exceed $ Feel free to re-gift something you already have that is new or gently used. Page 7

Then come to the Holiday Harmony Spectacular Show December 1, 2018 presented by the Heart of America men s Barbershop Harmony Society chorus and the Kansas City Sweet Adelines. 100 voices singing Christmas carols and other holiday favorites in a cappella harmony are guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit. You'll see lots of familiar faces on stage... Jim Bagby, Jana Henderson, Carol Schumacher, Linda Schumacher, Mike Schumacher and Peggy Sinden. And, you don't want to miss our featured guest quartet, Class Ring! These talented young women are beautiful inside and out. And, they just won the Sweet Adeline's International Quartet Competition! The show will be held in the Unity Village Auditorium. Show time is 2:00 pm. Ticket price is $15 each. There's a sign up sheet in the parlor or contact Marleen Merrill or Mike Schumacher if you'd like to join the Dine with Nine group that will be attending. Stay tuned for more information about dinner following the show from Marleen Merrill.
