1 Steeple Talk sure I spend time with my family, especially my grandkids (my greatest joy). I am so grateful to be able to share this part of my journey with you all. B u i l d i n g R e l a t i o n s h i p s w i t h P e o p l e i n C h r i s t October 2018 Dear Friends, Autumn is my favorite season of the year. The amazing array of colors on the trees is a delight to our eyes and spirits. The miracle of the harvest is exciting to watch and a lot of hard work to do. The pumpkins, corn mazes, Halloween and CANDY are important rituals in our celebration of autumn. The cooler temperatures bring a welcome relief from the scorching heat. We begin to make plans for Thanksgiving. As I reflect on the Seasons of Life, I sense that I am definitely in the autumn of my life. My hair has changed color, many of them have already fallen off! Some days I look in the mirror and see a pumpkin. The good news is that I can smile and make a jack o lantern. I have a growing desire to ride a John Deere Tractor! I also find myself being more grateful for the many blessings and relationships of the spring, summer, and autumn of my life. In this autumn of my life, I do not take any day for granted. I am thankful for every day. I make As I face the winter of my life, which will come, I know that the same God who has been with me throughout my journey will be with me every day until God welcomes me home. This is the good news for us as we all travel through the seasons of our lives together. God is with us every step of the journey. God blesses our lives. God s love always surrounds us. Jesus Christ is our hope and our salvation. The Holy Spirit is our comforter. Let us journey on Yours in Christ, Ron Page 1

2 Session at Work Deacon Report YOUR SESSION AT WORK By now we have become comfortable with Pastor Ron and his inspiring messages each Sunday morning. But this is just one of his responsibilities with us. He has worked with each committee and at the same time he is preparing us for the next step in calling a pastor. The Session voted to instruct the clerk to write a letter to the Stated Clerk of Heartland of Heartland Presbytery to ask permission allowing us to form a Pastor Nominating Committee. I just put that letter in the mail this morning. There are still several steps to be taken as we prepare to nominate the committee. The middle of this month the session and other interested persons will meet with Rev. Sally Wright, the Acting Associate Executive Presbyter of Heartland Presbytery, to work on the mission of our church. Before leaving, Pastor Pat was helping to direct the session in defining the purpose of our church. Of course, we have had the motto for many years. BRPC Building Relationships with People in Christ. But we spent many hours developing a Mission Statement. I would like you each to review this regularly. It is framed and hung on the west wall in the parlor. We still have other routine issues going on throughout the church being done by our diligent volunteers. Sunday school is off to a great start for both youth and adults. Mission work is continuing with the upcoming Sloppy Joe dinner and talent show. I understand donations will be sold or auctioned off as well as many baked items. Fellowship cooks the sloppy joe meal. Property is constantly keeping our church looking great and in working order. We have a great music program. Come to think of it, all of our congregation works to keep BRPC a beautiful place to worship and call home. I am looking forward to seeing you all at Sloppy Joe. The last two years I was home after surgery on the knee and unable to attend. I know we have talent in our fellowship. Yours in Christ, Avis Odenbaugh, clerk of sessions At the August Session meeting, the Session approved a recommendation from the Personnel Committee that the position of Children and Youth Coordinator be dissolved effective September 15, A task force consisting of representatives from Personnel, Christian Education, and parents will be formed to study new models and methods to help continue this vital ministry. We appreciate and give thanks for Christi s faithful work. Christ s last day of official work in the old position was September 15. She will be wrapping up and packing up between September 16 and September 30. Home Communion The first time I joined in a home communion service several years ago when I lived in Indiana was very meaningful and still memorable. The pastor, a deacon and I served Christ s body and blood to a man who had been ill for several months. We knew it was likely to be his last communion, and he and his wife were very grateful that we came. I felt so blessed to be included in that awe-filled time, especially since we did soon lose him from our fellowship. Many years later, my own dear mother needed communion at her new home in a care center in Blue Springs. Pastor Pat, several friends and I visited her so she could receive the Lord s Supper, as her faith community called communion. Mother and I both were so grateful that she could receive this means of grace after a long absence from attending church. Every home communion service is a holy and significant time, just like what we experience in church. We are remembering our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, and we re celebrating with all the saints in Heaven. On World Communion Sunday, October 7, please consider participating with the deacons, elders, and many others who will travel to the homes of our dear church members who can t come to church. We ll fellowship with them and celebrate communion. It will be very meaningful and memorable. And a blessing for everyone who joins in. Shelley Melewski Page 2

Now its YOUR turn to carefully and prayerfully consider your 2019 Pledge! Thanks to all of the volunteers that step up and do so many tasks; thus saving money. It still takes a lot of money in order to keep everything running smoothly. Peace and Grace, Sandy Moore Chairman of the Finance Committee Fellowship I do believe that Fall has arrived and ya all know what that means SLOPPY JOE CAFÉ. We don t want you to miss out on this fabulous event. On a more somber note, please offer your prayers for our leader Debbie Jones as you know is having health issues along with Bob. In Christ Connie Oliver Property Recycling Due to continuous fines for non-compliant items contaminating our recycling bin each week, we are no longer able to offer recycling to the community. Thank you for continuing to recycle at another location or through a local company. We are in the process of researching in-house only recycling for BRPC. Roof Repairs Committee members have met with a local roofing company and our insurance adjustor regarding the August 28 hail storm. We have incurred significant damage to the roof and are awaiting information. Once repair estimates have been submitted and approved by insurance. It appears that we may be able to have our entire roof replaced with minimal cost to BRPC. Please pray that we are able to make the repairs necessary at as low a cost as possible. Please direct any questions to Gary Oberlander, Christi Neal, or Bobby Neal. We are grateful that we no longer have inside leaks. Drinking Fountains By the time this news is printed, we hope to have new drinking fountains installed in the parlor and upstairs. Maintenance Needs/Concerns If you have a concern or see something that needs our attention, please write the issue down with the date and your name and place in Bobby Neal s mailbox. We may not be able to address everything at once, but we will do our very best to fix the problem. Thank you. Building Security With recent rains, our outside doors do not always close completely. Please check that all doors securely close and lock after exiting the building. Also, please check restroom lights, coffee pots, ovens, etc. Thank you! Building Request Forms Please remember to submit a building use request form for an event that is not regularly scheduled. Please check the wall calendar for conflicts and pencil in your event with pending. Please ask the office to help place items on the web calendar after approval, if you need assistance. Page 7

8 Grace Notes OWLS Creativity is an odd thing sometimes. Actually I don't know when it isn't odd. Creativity is something that seems to catch me off guard and also extremely elusive just when I think I need it most. We occasionally even use the word for people we think are odd; perhaps as a little bit of a put down. We have depended upon creativity for our very life at BRPC. Our ministry and congregation exists because of creative and prayerful leaders that have been able to use limited resources to build and sustain this congregation for many years. The very God we worship we call Creator. Is the Creator creative? Such a silly question. Beyond the oddity and perhaps because it; creativity is messy, it's sometimes painful, chaotic, fun, frustrating, full of mistakes, and very often a blessing from our Divine Creator. If we are willing to grow here at BRPC creativity will be near the center of this work. And just like any other aspect of our being creativity grows when it is honored, nurtured, guided and especially appreciated for it to be any help to us at all. This season I'm so grateful for the support for creativity by so many individuals at BRPC. Open my eyes and ears, O God, to your creative creatures at work, being your hands and feet here at Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church. Help and guide me in your love to allow the new and perhaps slightly odd to express your presence here among us. September 19th, The OWLS were mesmerized by the haunting melodies played on the Native American flute by Terry Whetstone. Gary Oberlander and Lee Starcke added to the ambiance by wearing their native American attire, too. October 17tth Sign up in the narthex to experience our Oktoberfest celebration complete with brats (specially prepared by Gary Oberlander, German potato salad (specially prepared by Mary Lou Oberlander, and black forest tortes (specially prepared by Marleen Merrill) AND German Polka Band, the Alpen Spielers. This dynamic and energetic group will perform a variety of music from waltzes to marches...and ballads to polkas. Ask anyone who has heard them before - this is not-to-be-missed good fun! November 21st Plan now to join us for a traditional Thanksgiving meal followed by a time of fellowship and fun as we play an easy but entertaining card game called Italian Poker (which has nothing to do with Italy or poker) December 19th we will have our Christmas dinner followed by a fun gift exchange loosely based on the right-left-center game we have played in the past. Please bring a wrapped, gift - value not to exceed $ Feel free to re-gift something you already have that is new or gently used. Page 8
