1 OCTOBER 2017 CONNECT GRACE-FILLED COMMUNITY INSPIRED WORSHIP TRANSFORMATIONAL MISSION GRATEFUL Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:4-6 Several years ago, my family and I participated with other members of our church in a day of service gleaning apples. We partnered with an organization called America s Grow-a-Row which had agreements with an apple orchard, where volunteers could come on a given Saturday and pick up all of the apples that had fallen on the ground, but were still usable. These apples were good to be eaten, but were not allowed to be resold because they had fallen off of the tree. Our group collected several tons of apples, which would have otherwise rotted on the ground, and they were distributed through another United Methodist church in the city of Newark for people who had little access to affordable, nutritious food. Our daughter, Annelyse, was a year and a half old - but got such joy by picking up apples and dumping the basket into a larger container. When we see how abundant the gifts are around us and find ways to share them, it is an act of generosity. But, I have learned that generosity first stems from a place of gratitude. When we can truly appreciate and are grateful for the people, resources, opportunities, and blessings in our lives, we are more willing to share and invest in the success and happiness of other people. Starting on October 8, Pastor Christina and I will be preaching a 4-week sermon series called #Grateful. In a day and time where anxieties are high, and negative headlines and bickering through social media seem to abound, it is important to root ourselves in gratitude. Like the apples on the ground, there is more than enough to share if we can first see them as gifts and not things to throw away. In Grace and Gratitude, Rev. Chris Heckert, Sr. Pastor WEDNESDAY NIGHT CONNECT GROUPS Wednesday nights at HUMC are a great opportunity to connect with others in a small group! If you are looking to join a Connect Group, join us on Wednesday nights at 7pm, beginning October 4! If the group size grows large, we ll split into smaller groups. All are welcome! If you have a Connect Group and would like to use the church on Wednesday nights to meet, contact the church office to reserve a space. haddonfieldumc.org 29 Warwick Rd., Haddonfield, NJ P: (856) #haddonfieldumc /HaddonfieldUMC
