1 DECEMBER 2017 CONNECT GRACE-FILLED COMMUNITY INSPIRED WORSHIP TRANSFORMATIONAL MISSION SONGS OF THE SEASON Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o er the plains, and the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Angels We Have Heard on High, UMH #238 Several years ago, I was visiting family in Pennsylvania until late at night on Thanksgiving, when the clock turned to midnight as I was driving back to the place I was staying. The XM radio station I was listening to immediately switched from classic rock music to Christmas carols, and just like that, Christmastime had begun. Now, it seems that you can hear Christmas music earlier and earlier each year, creating a longer season. I think that people have caught on to the fact that while decorations, smells, sales at stores, holiday greens, foods, sweets, and parties are all a part of the Christmas season, it is really the music that tells us that the season is here. Advent is a season within the church that ushers in Christmas, and it also begins with music. We seem to keep two distinct canons of music that we listen to during the holiday season. One we hear on the radio and listen to in the stores, which includes Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., Mariah Carey, and whoever sings your favorite song. The other is the sacred music of the season, which includes the songs we sing in church. This Advent season, beginning on December 3, I want to take down the barrier that divides the sacred and secular songs of the season and look at the underlying messages that truly tell the gospel story in some of the most popular songs of the season. The sermons will look at five different songs, our daily reflections will highlight a different song of the season each day, and we have also developed a playlist that includes all of those songs so you can listen to them throughout the season. I am grateful to sing, hum, and listen to the songs of the season this year with you in this faith community. In Grace and Gratitude, Rev. Chris Heckert, Sr. Pastor CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES All are invited to join in celebration during one of our Christmas Eve Services and special live nativity!
