2 Locust Presbyterian Church Prelude, Welcome, Announcements Honoring Birthday & Anniversary Children s Message: (Younger children dismissed to the Nursery for the rest of the service. Older Children please return to your seats.) *Call to Worship (from Psalm 17) One: I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; Many: Incline your ear to me, hear my words. One: As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; All: When I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness. *Ingathering Song: Seek Ye First #333 Presbyterian Hymnal Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness And all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Ask and it shall be given unto you, Seek and ye shall find, Knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Repeat first verse Call to Confession: Silent Confession Unison Prayer of Confession: One: Holy one, you invite us into your story; Many: But we often ignore your invitation. One: You pursue us in covenant; Many: But we pursue other loves. One: You surround us with grace that grounds us in your presence; Many: But we ground our hearts in other sources of comfort. All: Forgive us, for in the struggles of life we sometimes turn away from you, our one Rock and our Redeemer. Give us strength to trust you, give us boldness to wrestle with you, give us courage to work for reconciliation with our neighbors and our world. In Christ s name and for his sake we pray, amen. MISSION STUDY UPDATE The Mission Study Team has designed a great survey to gauge the interests and needs of the congregation. Everyone who participates in the life of our church is encouraged to respond to this when it is available in a few weeks. We encourage you to fill this out online if you can, but paper versions will also be available. Please take the time to do this. Looking back 8 years ago, it looks like just 27 people filled out the survey we need better participation this time around. After the survey is compiled, we ll follow this up with some focus group type meetings to help the committee compile their report. Committee members are Ray Bradford, Fred Wickert, Jane Blackmon, Amy Bates, Michael Longhurst, Dennis Joyner and Jamie Kappes. 3 Tithes and Offering Music Offering ; Breathe rning Prayers Words and Music by Marie Barnett, Arranged by Dave Williamson *Offering Response Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen Scripture: Genesis 32:22-32 Sermon: The Persistence of God: Grace that Wrestles Us Rev. Amo *Affirmation of Faith: (From Confession of 1967) We acknowledge that God s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of human minds. We ascribe to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But in Jesus Christ God reveals love by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful people. The power of God s love in Christ transforms the world and discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of his love. We believe that God has created us for personal relationship in which we may respond to the love of the Creator. The Holy Spirit creates and renews the church as the community in which we are reconciled to God and to one another. We believe that in spite of our sin, the Holy Spirit gives us power to become representatives of Jesus Christ and to proclaim the good news of reconciliation to all. *Song of the Day: Amazing Grace How Sweet The Sound #280 Presbyterian Hymnal OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE PLEASE JOIN US IN PRAYER FOR: Our Session and Our LPC Family, Our Government Leaders, LPC Prayer Shawl Ministry, Our Youth, LPC Choir, Ministry Focus of LPC, Our Military. 4 WE REJOICE THAT YOU ARE WORSHIPING WITH US If you are a member of this church, please seek out those who are visiting and welcome them to this family of faith. If you are visiting and would like to know more about the church and membership here, please speak to the minister. MUSIC NOTES We ll continue some music fun this week. One of the choir s favorite songs is a great version of Trading My Sorrows. We ve sung it at least once a year for 10 years or more. It was also a VBS song for several years including in 2006 with the theme Fiesta. So, today, we invite everyone to sing along with it as the Praise Song. It gets a bit hard to follow the parts and it has the men and women singing different songs at the same time but we think you will catch on just follow the choir if you get lost. During the offering, the choir will share an older song made famous by Michael W. Smith, Breathe. If you know the words, you can sing along to this as well. The Song of the Day is John Newton s famous hymn, Amazing Grace. Let s make a joyful noise together today! WELCOME EVAN AMO WELCOME Rev. Evan Amo and Lauren. Today we officially welcome Evan and Lauren in proper LPC fashion with a covered dish lunch. Please stay and enjoy a meal together. WEDNESDAY FAMILY MEALS Thank you to those that attended the meeting last week. We are excited about the upcoming Wednesday meal teams! We will have more information next week about Cook team leaders and ways for you to help. See the OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE page for the Fall season meal dates. TEN CENT A MEAL OFFERING GOOD NEWS FROM THE HUNGER ACTION WORK GROUP Delivering the Good News! When it comes to delivering the Good News to our sisters and brothers of the Presbytery of Charlotte, the comments from my own church members come to mind, they remind me that the "Best News is often delivered with brevity!" The Good News, in brief, which we have to share with you this month is that your Ten Cents-A-Meal Offerings have enabled us to remit another $50,000 in assistance to our 2017 portfolio agencies for the 2nd Quarter! Please express to your church family members the heartfelt appreciation that we continually hear from those who serve in the various ministries and agencies which the Presbytery of Charlotte supports through our TCaM offerings! --> Year-To-Date Offerings Received from our supporting churches through June 30th: $83,647 --> 3rd Quarter disbursements to Grantees will be mailed out in mid-october *Assurance of Grace *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. World without end, Amen, Amen. *Praise Song; Trading My Sorrows with Learning to Lean I m trading my sorrows, I m trading my shame, I m laying them down for the joy of the Lord. I m trading my sickness, I m trading my pain. I m laying them down for the joy of the Lord. We say, Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord. Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord. Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord, Amen! I am pressed but not crushed, persecuted, not abandoned, Struck down but not destroyed. I am blessed beyond the curse for His promise will endure That His joy s gonna be my strength. Though the sorrow may last for the night, His joy comes in the morning. Learning to lean, learning to lean, I m learning to lean on Jesus. Finding more power than I d ever dreamed, I m learning to lean on Jesus. (Ladies sing Yes, Lord section 3x) (Men sing Learning to lean section 1x and then the Yes, Lord section 1x) Though the sorrow may last for the night, His joy comes in the morning. For the joy of the Lord. For the joy of the Lord. Yes, Lord, yes Lord, yes, yes, Lord, Amen! AMEN! Morning Prayer and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not unto temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever, Amen
