1 When I was a kid one Christmas my aunt Ceil 9 Pentecost C 2013; Luke 10:38-42 July 21, 2013 Cross and Crown Lutheran Church Simon does not Say brought us the hottest electronic game there was or at least we thought it was pretty hot. It was called "Simon." Those of you of a certain age might remember it. Now loosely, Simon was based on the game "Simon Says" which by the way but since it was designed and marketed in the seventies I was delighted to discover Simon the electronic version was much, much tackier than the original the kids in the Peter Panda pre-school right here still play. Basically, for those of you who've never seen it, Simon was a round plastic box with four big colored paddles: red, blue, green and yellow I think. Each paddle lit up and each paddle made a unique tone. Simple, right? The object of the game was very, very simple. Simon would light up one of the paddles, say the red one, and play the tone that went with it, and all you had to do was push down the red paddle. No problem - and not much skill is involved there. If you got it right, Simon would take you to the next level.

2 It would repeat the first paddle, red, and then it would add another one, say the yellow paddle. So now you, or the next player, had to push two paddles: the red one then the yellow one. Still very easy, right? No problem. Very doable. Then as long as the players kept getting the pattern right, Simon would keep adding more and more and more plays to the base pattern: red, yellow, red, blue, blue, red, green, yellow! Now after about five or six minutes of this I remember my siblings and I would frantically be trying to remember a string of ten, twenty or once I remember something like close to thirty moves that you had to repeat perfectly and quickly because (of course) if you went too slowly that was yet another reason for Simon to kick you out of the game. But as long as you kept getting the ever growing pattern right and you did it quickly enough, Simon would go ahead and put another color on your plate. If you screwed up however like you pushed the blue paddle when you were supposed to push the green one, Simon would make an awful loser noise and you were out of the game.

3 Yeah, that was one sick game, fun, but sick; at least when it got to be too much you always had the option to walk away from it. Unfortunately though, for many folks playing a stupid game like Simon is no longer an option: it's what we call life. This occurred to me recently when I discovered that trying to schedule a few ministry meetings via wasn't going to be difficult it was going to be nigh on impossible. No, instead what happened was that I needed to schedule several, quick, post-worship, pre-meetings just so that we could compare our schedules in order to schedule a future "real" meeting. That's kind of nuts when you think about it: pre-meetings to schedule real meetings. But it's what many of us have to do these days. Instead of chasing the red paddle, then the green paddle, then the blue paddle, then back to the red paddle we're driven into chasing this practice, or that teacher's meeting, or this doctor's appointment

4 or that concert, and then get back to soccer practice before the thunderstorms moved in. If you talk to some folks it's not enough that we are expected to find time for family and school and church and community, but somehow we also need to fit in extra swim meets, and track meets, and rummage sale, and that evaluation with your boss, and what about Face Book time and team meetings, and gym time and "family from out of town are visiting" time and cleaning up after the dog, and, oh right, there's laundry time and food shopping time and seriously(!!) when am I going to find time to pray and make dinner and how in heaven's name did that spaghetti sauce get there?!?! Honey, get the hose! Does any of this sound familiar? Red paddle, blue paddle, red paddle, yellow paddle, green paddle! Oh wait, you double booked? You're kids are supposed to be in two place? Your spouse is leaving town for a week? The car has no gas? You ran out of gas? You're out. Game over. Kind of nuts, isn't it? And popular culture is not on our side when it comes to this. Lately I've been seeing Face Book memes - by the way if you have no idea what a Face Book meme is - it's kind of this decade's version of a bumper sticker -

5 and the memes I've been seeing lately say things like, "Live big or go home." "You can sleep when you're dead." and my personal favorite "Decaf is for sissies." In this morning's gospel, while St. Luke makes no mention of it, I could easily see Martha having "Decaf is for sissies" on the back of her camel. She's a doer. There is no doubt about that. I bet if she'd have been a member of our congregation she'd be the one organizing confirmation classes, and the rummage sale, and Chubby Sunday, and VBS and Second Helpings and Friendship Bible Study and the choir all the while getting at least three binding cost estimates for the parking lot and the painting and the carpets between orchestrating multiple missionaries trips to South America and Africa. Martha is a doer. There's no question about that. And, I think it's fair to say that we love her for it, because by and large she looks and acts a whole lot like us in this congregation. She's the one who doesn't even flinch, not even a little, when the drama room (did you know we have a drama room? Well we do.) She's the one who doesn't even flinch when the drama room needs to be cleaned out so that our kids can have a special classroom this fall.

6 Instead, she rearranges her schedule... yet again. She's the one who cleans the pool and counts the life vests so the youth can have a fun outing. She's the one who contacts the Interfaith Hospitality Network and Allisonville Christian and the Indy Hebrew congregation so that all of us can deepen our discipleship by serving those without homes. She's the one who burns her own vacation time doing the sorts of unglamorous things around here and around our community that make it a better place to live and worship in. And yet, and this kind of frosts me, she's the one who gets the brunt of Jesus' scolding in this morning's gospel. And what the heck's with that? I mean doesn't Jesus even remember his own take home message from last week when he told the lawyer, "Go and do likewise?" especially since the last time I looked both Go and Do are verbs and Martha is definitely doing while Mary is not. At the very least there definitely seems to be some mixed messages going on here. Are we supposed to "go and do" or just sit there? I'll be honest this has bothered me for some time. But as I was praying with this scripture it occurred to me, what if, just like last week

7 when we talked about the Good Samaritan, this gospel story is more than just "don't be like this, be like this," in this case, "don't be like Martha, be like Mary"? which by the way is the way so many people have heard this particular story for quite some time. What if this story is not so much about ranking one sort of discipleship above another, that is, what Mary is doing as it's about our Lord and Savior is somehow better than what Martha is doing, being deeply and painfully worried but instead is hopelessly about his friend Martha and even dangerously trapped who perhaps is no longer sharing hospitality with him and his friends inside a bad game of Simon? You see I don't have to tell you Red paddle, blue paddle, cook the meal, wash the dishes, feed the camel, clear the table. how seductive it can be to get oneself so busy, because in our culture busy-ness has been raised to the level of being a virtue. The problem is however is that in all this business, the reasons for our actions Jesus warns all us Martha's - can often become hopelessly lost or distorted.

8 and believe me I'm a card carrying Martha too - that we can in fact become worried and distracted by many things. We can easily lose sight of the one true thing we need which is Jesus himself. (pause) Now you guys are smart, I know this, and I'll bet that more than a few of you might be saying to yourself right about now something like, "OK pastor, guilty as charged I'm a Martha-type, I admit it, and I'm even willing to go so far as to admit that I can get pretty darn distracted by everything I think I have to do every day and no doubt Pastor you're going to say something like, 'so just don't be so distracted. Choose your activities wisely; stick to your priorities.'" And if you were thinking something like this you'd be about half-right. See? I told you: you're smart. Because while it's true that we are called to look at what we are doing and by that I mean - everything we are doing from what we do for a living to how we live our lives - and after having looked carefully at these things, we are called to - to use a very churchy word - discern whether we're actually paying attention to Jesus or not when we book that vacation to Cabo san Cabo - that's not the whole picture. Because if I were to stop there,

9 if I were to leave you with the thought that we need to make sure we align our priorities to Jesus you'd be well within your rights to yank my preacher card right out of my pocket right now, because that would be leaving you this morning with only half the story which some folks call the Law and I wouldn't have left you with the most important part which is the good news. You see, the good news is that Jesus is already perfectly aware that it's darn near impossible for any of us to put that Simon game down once we have it in our grubby little hands on it: red paddle, blue paddle, Lutherwood, Lenten Suppers. For many of us, we are utterly addicted to doing without always thinking. This is not news to Jesus, nor does it stop Him from loving us even when we can't always pull our eyes off those blinking paddles and turn them towards Him like we ought to. Yellow paddle, green paddle, Green team, GUTS. He knows that even when we are engaged in some of the very best things - the very best things - that we can do:

10 praying with one another, serving others in need, sacrificing our time, and sacrificing our resources that we can never be fully mindful of that one truly needed thing which is Him. And do you know what? That's OK, because it doesn't change the fact that He loves us - passionately and unconditionally. It doesn't change the fact that Jesus chooses to dine with Mary AND Martha. It doesn't change the fact that He is willing to die for us, and what's more He has already decided to come to us, all of us, the Mary's the Martha's, the Peter's the Andrew's, the Lydia's and the Thomas's, all of us - Jesus comes to all of us in a splash of water, in a taste of wine and bread, even and especially when in our hearts we can't always come to him. He knows that He is the one true thing that we need, and so even when we are busy sorting clothes

11 and herding kids and cleaning rooms and running errands and running meetings and working budgets He knows, He knows that we still need Him and so, He comes to dine with us - thanks be to God. Amen.
