In commemoration of that coming, we light candles for the four weeks leading to Christmas and reflect on the coming of Christ. It is significant that the church has always used that language the coming of Christ because it speaks to a deep truth. Christ is coming. Christ is always coming, always entering a troubled world, a wounded heart. And so we light the first candle, the candle of hope, and dare to express our longing for peace, for healing, and the well-being of all creation. Loving God, as we enter this Advent season, We open all the dark places in our lives and memories to the healing light of Christ. Show us the creative power of hope. Prepare our hearts to be transformed by You, That we may walk in the light of Christ. Take time, in the busyness of this season, for quiet reflection For the light of God s love is discernible everywhere. We will let ourselves be surprised by wonder, And set aside time to offer quiet thanks. The good news of Advent is this: Christ is coming. Christ is always coming. We will welcome Christ into our hearts. We will let ourselves be guided by His ministry. We will go forth from this place in hope. On December 9 th, we will have a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to make gifts for our mission partners, their families, and friends. We need at least eight adult leaders to work in teams to help lead craft stations. All of the supplies will be provided by the church. Leaders are asked to help with preparing supplies, setting up, explaining, and cleaning up the craft they will lead. CLOTHING DRIVE In partnership with Harbor View Presbyterian, we are collecting pre-owned or new outerwear clothing for Hispanic men living and working on Johns Island. Clothing needed are jackets, coats, work boots, sweats, flannel shirts, & gloves. Collection boxes are in McAllister Hall and the narthex. The deadline for donations is December 1 st. HELP FOR HALOS HALOS, one of JIPC s long-time ministries, provides support for abused and neglected children in the Charleston area. Current need: New or used dressers for kinship care families (adults who have taken in children, usually relatives, to keep them out of the foster care system. To contribute, please contact Emily Brown ( ) or Henry Meeuwse ( ). CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE is in the narthex. This week is an opportunity to purchase a Christmas gift through the HALOS program that partners congregation with foster care children. Gift Information is provided on the tree and the deadline for these gifts is December 6th. JAMES ISLAND OUTREACH needs your donations of non-perishable foods, especially canned pasta. You can bring your donations to the church narthex, gymnasium, or McAllister Hall. STEWARDSHIP CONSECRATION SUNDAY UPDATE As of Tuesday, we ve received 170 Estimates of Giving cards pledging $ We still have 211 families who ve not yet responded to our Consecration Sunday, and we encourage your participation. Of these, 40 families made pledges for the current year and we pray they will submit a card for CONDOLENCES We extend our condolences to Anne Hauck on the death of her brother Alex Logan last Sunday nights; to Richard Beck and Karen Lovelace Beck on the death of Karen s mother, who passed away Friday, November 20 th. Please join us in extending your prayers to Anne and Karen and their families.
