1 November 2018 Sunday Worship Services are held at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. I Am the Bible I am the Bible, God s wonderful library. I am always and above all the truth. To the weary pilgrim, I am a strong staff. To the one who sits in darkness, I am glorious light. To those who stumble beneath heavy burdens, I am sweet rest. To him who has lost his way, I am a safe guide. To those who are sick in sin, I am healing strength and forgiveness, To the discouraged, I am a glad message of hope. To those who are distressed and tossed about by the storms of life, I am an anchor, sure and steadfast. To those who search for salvation, I reveal the Savior of the world. I am the Bible. 10 Note Writing to Women and Children Detained at the US/ Mexico Border Sunday, November 4, following the 10 am Worship Service in the Lounge Everyone is Invited The Mission and Social Witness Committee invites everyone to join us to write notes & cards to women and children detained at the US/ Mexico border. This is a Church World Service project called the Angel-to-Angel Project, Cards of Care and Prayer. Note cards, postcards, pens and Spanish phrases will be provided. For questions, contact Nina Zanetti at or ninazanetti@verizon.net. The human rights issues surrounding the separation of families are upsetting for all of us. This is a chance to be "doing something". No matter how small the effort we may think sending notes is, it is an active Christian response. Writing the notes in community adds depth of purpose. For more information on the Angel to Angel Project, see the link below. Election year advice In 1774, John Wesley, co-founder of the Methodist Church, offered this advice to people who would be voting: Vote, without fee or reward, for the person you judge most worthy. Speak no evil of the person you vote against. Take care your spirits aren t sharpened against those who voted on the other side. 11 ANNUAL MAYAN HANDS CRAFT SALES NOVEMBER 25 and DECEMBER 2 FOLLOWING ALL WORSHIP SERVICES GET A JUMP ON YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING & SUPPORT THIS WORTHY CAUSE! QUALITY BASKETS, SCARVES, PURSES, JEWELRY, CHRISTMAS ITEMS, etc. Mayan Hands is a FAIR TRADE organization, working with about 150 women in eight Guatemalan communities. These talented crafters produce beautiful, high quality items. For more than three thousand years, working on the backstrap loom, Mayan women have woven their own and their family s clothes and produced items for sale. The ancient back-strap loom is made of several sticks and a leather or sisal strap that wraps around the woman s body. It requires painstaking dedication and skill. With some complex patterns even expert weavers can weave only about one inch of cloth per hour. At present, there are nearly one million weavers in Guatemala, and not nearly enough outlets or customers for their products. Too often, desperate for cash, they sell their products for less than it costs to make them. Mayan weavers are recognized, world-wide, as talented textile artists, but most of them live in conditions of extreme poverty. MAYAN HANDS MISSION IS TO ASSIST THESE GUATEMALAN WOMEN IN THEIR QUEST TO RISE FROM POVERTY. WORKING WITH FAIR TRADE, THEY CAN COUNT ON A MODEST BUT REGULAR INCOME. THEY CAN FEED THEIR FAMILIES BETTER, AFFORD TO SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL, IMPROVE THEIR HOMES AND EVEN SAVE A LITTLE. SELLING THEIR HAND WOVEN TEXTILES AT A FAIR PRICE, THESE WOMEN ARE GAINING CONTROL OVER THEIR OWN LIVES. YOU CAN HELP! EVERY PURCHASE MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN A FAMILY S LIFE! Page 11
