How much do you really acknowledge that in your everyday thinking? If you eat out somewhere and you get an exceptionally good meal, do you give thanks to God? If you have made the final payment on your car and it is still running good, do you give thanks to God? If you have a good night s sleep, do you wake thanking God? If your children choose to obey and not give you major problems, do you give thanks to God? Do you see my point here? We are commanded by God to give thanks for all things. 1Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. If you are facing a case of the grumblies, stop and give thanks. Give thanks for what you might ask? Give thanks for any little or large blessing that can qualify as a good and perfect gift. There is an old saying that says that thanksgiving can lead to thanksliving. When you focus your attention on the reality of God s goodness to us, that will change our outlook on life. We will no longer see just the problems and troubles, we will also begin to see the wide extent of God s good and perfect gifts. Go ahead and see how quickly you can list ten things for which you can be thankful. That list of ten can soon become a hundred and soon your outlook on life may find it taking a very positive turn. Pastor Charles pastorchas@sbcglobal.net Sunday November 3

2 Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:6 (NIV 1984) November is a month to give thanks. Do you have a jar, basket, or wall where you and your family write notes throughout the month or year for things you are thankful for, then read them aloud at Thanksgiving dinner? Perhaps this is a tradition you would like to start. Ideas abound on Pinterest and other internet sites to help get you started. Discipleship Fall Bible studies are coming to a close this month. Attendance has remained strong, and I m hearing women talk about the studies they are doing being worthwhile in various ways. Plans are being made now for winter / spring options. If you would like to be part of a small group women s Bible study, look for information in the December newsletter about upcoming opportunities in January and beyond. Service We ll be Treating the Kirksville Public Works Department Well in November. We would like to provide 13 dozen treats for these employees. Besides sweets, salty snacks and fresh fruit are also welcome, so feel free to donate pretzels, crackers, or chips & dip, etc. A sign-up sheet is in the foyer if you d like to donate some goodies. Treats will be delivered Thursday, November 21. Please have your donation at the church no later than noon. Please also remember to pray for these workers and the duties they perform, like mowing the grass in our city parks and keeping our streets clear of snow and ice. Contact Vickie Rudd for more information. Ministry Love, Lily Love, Lily will be having Crochet Day, Saturday, November 2 at 10:30 am at the church. Whether you are a beginning crafter, or a confident crocheter or knitter and would like to join us, come on out! If you don t know how to crochet, Stacy is a very good and patient teacher. We ll have a great time working on a worthy project. Bring your current project, supplies, a friend, and a snack (if you wish) and we ll fellowship and work together. Love, Lily wants to show God s love to as many women and their newborns as possible. We aim to do this by making and donating handmade baby items (blankets, hats, booties, etc.) to pregnancy resource centers. Wouldn t it be great if these young women truly felt God s love through our simple actions? Do you have a connection to a pregnancy resource center in another city? If so, we d like to be introduced. For more information about Love, Lily, please contact Stacy Tucker-Potter. Driver s Ed Once again, we have been given the opportunity to teach female international students to drive. Some of the women already know how to drive, they just need to practice and be familiar with Kirksville streets. For information on how you can participate, contact Stacy Xander. Prayer Do you have a specific prayer request? Would you like the women s ministry prayer team to pray for your need? Contact Pam Barnett with your request, and she will discreetly pass it on to our team of prayer warriors Resources There are several books on the women s ministry table in the foyer from which to choose. Find one that fits you and check it out. Facebook Remember to like us on Facebook: Hamilton Street Baptist Church Women s Ministry and Love, Lily. I d like to close with a few things for which I m thankful: My church family who supports, loves, and prays for members during their time of loss and grief. My pastor who takes time from his busy schedule to preach a funeral for a nonmember. Sunday School classes which reach out to absentees and nonattenders. Sympathy cards, follow-up phone calls, and personal visits just to check in. It sounds like we practice what we believe, doesn t it? Good job! Thank you so much! Bring your supplies, a friend, and a snack (if you wish) and we ll fellowship and work together. If you are a confident crocheter or knitter and would like to join us, come on out! We ll have a great time working on a worthy project. Contact: Stacy Tucker-Potter. Give Thanks! Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated primarily in North America. Although it is rooted in the history of the Pilgrims, Thanksgiving is no longer generally considered a religious holiday, but a day to gather with family, stuff ourselves with lots of food, watch football and parades, and be thankful for the blessings of life. Today, most of us celebrate Thanksgiving in warm, comfy homes equipped with all the latest conveniences. But when the Pilgrims sat down to the first Thanksgiving feast at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621, they praised God in the midst of extremely harsh living conditions. By then, after spending only a year in their new homeland, they had lost half of their entire group to illness, starvation, Indian attacks and severe weather. But with unshakable faith in God, the Pilgrims inspired a tradition in their new land that would continue to be observed nearly 400 years later the celebration of Thanksgiving Day. What are you thankful for this year? The Bible says in I Chronicles 16:8, Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what He has done. During this Thanksgiving season let s give some serious thought to what we are thankful for and then go to God in prayer and thanksgiving. See you in worship! 6 Summary of Church Council Agenda Items Children s & Youth Christmas Program No leader has volunteered yet for the children s program. The youth want to have their own program, so the leader would be only responsible for the children s portion. The following items were discussed at the most recent Church Council meeting: Property Acquisition Update The owner has now stipulated concrete be poured within 5 years of purchase. Since this is a change in terms of the oral contract the church voted on, David Lupton will speak with him before the October business meeting. Fall Festival Update David Cook and Ashley Hartman, the organizers of the event, have reported they are on target. Worship Study Team Update The Nominating Committee will have this team filled by the November business meeting. Usher Ministry Individual Responsibilities The document will be proofed and will be recommended to the church for approval. Budget & Photo Requests The budget is ready to present. Ministry photos are to be forwarded to Pastor Charles. Budget adoption Sunday will be Sunday, November 3. Christmas Reflections Service The service s purpose would be to provide a setting for the congregation to slow down, stop, and worship during this season, rather than feeling the urgency of the season s activities. It was suggested it be a meditative service, with background music, selected passages of scripture, guided prayer, and an opportunity to come and go at will. Gideon s Speaker Request Church Council agreed to extend an invitation to Don Derryberry of the Gideons to speak in one of our services. BSU Progressive Dinner Tim King volunteered to prepare appetizers for approximately 30 BSU students on Friday, October 18 at 6 pm. Lisa King and Pam Barnett volunteered to help serve. Family Ministry Pastor Charles offered to coordinate family ministry until someone can be secured in this position. He said he would like the Nominating Committee to secure a Family Ministry Support team which would approve budget expenditures. A Family Fun Day has been scheduled at Jackson Farms on October 26 th. 7 Operation Christmas Child My family loves Operation Christmas Child! Our children start asking me weeks in advance when we can start filling our shoeboxes. One reason I am passionate about this ministry is because of the incredible opportunity it offers all of us, including our children, to be involved in missions. Our two oldest sons, Ethan and Tyler, have been involved in this ministry from a very young age, and now they share my passion. They very much look forward to their trip to the dollar store where they pick out items to fill their shoeboxes. They carefully pack their boxes, and then they pray for the boy who will receive this special box. They are confident that because of their shoebox gift, a little boy in a distant land will learn that Jesus loves him. According to Samaritan s Purse, not only will that little boy learn about Jesus, but so will approximately 10 members of his family. Each shoebox eternally impacts about 11 people. What an opportunity we have to change lives for Christ! So what will Ethan and Tyler pack in their shoe boxes? Probably a small stuffed animal, a toy car, a ball, a yo-yo or Slinky, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a washcloth and soap, a notebook and crayons or markers, and a bag of candy. These items that seem simple to us can be so valuable to a child who has so little. In September, our family attended a special event at Rehoboth featuring two guest speakers. One was Vladimir (Ted) Foreman, a young man who received a shoebox as a child in an orphanage in Russia. Ted told us that his three favorite items from his shoebox were toothpaste, a notebook, and a washcloth. With his notebook, he finally had paper that he could use for non-school purposes, and he used that paper to keep in contact with his sisters. Many children at Ted s orphanage had to share one towel, so he was delighted to receive his very own small towel the washcloth. Most importantly, Ted s shoebox gave him hope. He realized that there was someone who loved him enough to make this shoebox gift just for him, and that fact helped him to eventually understand the gift that God gave him by sending Jesus Christ. So what can you do to share the love of Jesus with these children? You can pack a shoebox (or shoeboxes!). Would you be able to pack one more box than you packed last year? If you want to contribute but don t want to pack shoeboxes, you can donate individual items that we will use to pack shoeboxes. You could donate a sack of toothpaste, a bag of candy, a jump rope, a doll, a ball so many choices! Or you could donate money to be used to pack a shoebox or to help with shipping costs. Most importantly, every one of us can pray for this ministry and specifically for the children who will receive these boxes as well as their families. Brochures describing how to pack your shoeboxes are available in the foyer. Gift suggestions are listed at the bottom of the brochure, as well as a list of items to not include. Please notice that the instructions in the brochure ask you to donate $7 or more per shoebox to help cover shipping costs, if possible. If you would like to participate in this project, please place your packed shoeboxes in the foyer by Sunday, November 17. If you would like to make a money donation, you can make your check payable to HSBC and designate it for Operation Christmas Child. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Tanya Tatro. WMU Cookbooks Planning your family s back to school lunches or Labor Day cookout? WMU Cookbooks are available for $5. 8 Quiet Time I love my quiet time. I will admit that some days I get so busy that I bypass my time with God or I don t spend enough time with Him. I try to spend at least 30 minutes reading a devotion and praying daily, but everyone must find the right time for them. If you can t start at thirty minutes, begin with ten. Your quiet time is fellowship with God. There are a few things you can do to be prepared for this time. First, be physically alert. Find a time when the cobwebs are out of your mind and you can think clearly. Second, find a place where you can focus. Jesus said in Mathew 6:6 to enter into your closet and pray. That simply means find a place of isolation where you can shut the door on the world and open your heart to God. Third, to have an effective quiet time, you need the right tools. Here are some ideas : a readable Bible - Invest in one with plenty of room to take notes in the margins. a prayer journal Keep a log of prayer needs and note when they are answered. And finally, be still and quiet. The Bible says in Psalm 46:10, Be still, and know that I am God. Focus your mind on Him. Calm down, relax, and recognize His presence. Take a deep breath and focus your thoughts on the Lord. Get into the Word of God. It is important for you to hear from God through His Word. Meditate on what you read. I pray these simple suggestions will help you have a daily quiet time in the presence of our loving, almighty, and powerful God. I will be looking for you in Sunday School! Pam am Barnett, Sunday School Director The Personnel Committee is accepting applications for weekend custodian. The candidate will also need to be available to move walls and furniture during the weekdays. Contact the Personnel Committee chairman, Michael Hartman or the church office. The Search Committee is now accepting resumes for both part-time Youth Minister & part-time Family Minister through the church office. Questions should be directed to Jonathan Walker, chair, Mike Brummit, Mike Hartman, Tim King, or Tabitha Cleaver. The purpose of the Church is to glorify God by fulfilling the Great Commandment ( 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:36-40) and the Great Commission ( 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20).
