New Staff - Rachel Pittman Madison Children s Ministry Director We are excited to announce and introduce our newest staff member, Rachel Pittman,

Rachel will also be serving as our Madison Student Ministry Girls Discipleship coordinator too.

Rachel married Jared in May of 2010. They have two awesome dogs, Duke and Daisy, and one really cool cat, Khan.

2 New Staff - Rachel Pittman Madison Children s Ministry Director We are excited to announce and introduce our newest staff member, Rachel Pittman, who will serve as our new Madison Children s Ministry Director. Rachel will also be serving as our Madison Student Ministry Girls Discipleship coordinator too. Rachel was born in Tampa, Florida and grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. She graduated in 2010 from Bob Jones University with a B.S. in Health, Fitness, and Recreation. Rachel married Jared in May of They have two awesome dogs, Duke and Daisy, and one really cool cat, Khan. Her passion is to see children and youth come to trust in Christ, be grounded in their faith, and transform into the salt and light of this world. 3 Looking Ahead with Steve Steve Bateman The shootings of black men by police officers and the shootings of police officers by black men in recent months have spawned countless discussions about race in our nation. The issue is emotionally charged, and often those in the conversation end up yelling past each other without a lot of listening. All of us can agree that what has happened in Ferguson, Baton Rouge, Dallas, St. Paul, Chicago, Arlington, Baltimore, and North Charleston is nothing short of tragic. None of us are without bias. Based on our life experience, when one of these stories hits the news, we will tend to give benefit of doubt either to the black man or the police officer. We know we must try to suspend our judgment, wait for the facts to emerge, and make a dispassionate decision. But our present emotions and our nation s past cloud our thinking. God forbid that one of these tragedies should happen here in Decatur or Madison. These things have a way of tearing a community apart, even setting it back for years. So we should do all we can to prevent it. And if it should ever happen, we should be ready to deal with it; to calm the community, to seek justice, to make peace. Does the church have a responsibility here? It absolutely does. We are the ambassadors of the Prince of Peace. The gospel has a way of breaking down the barriers that divide us and set the stage for these tragedies. Every time we lead someone to Christ, we are helping them to be reconciled to God, who will in turn command them to love their neighbor, regardless of race. Churches have great influence in our community, and when they come together in a common cause, great and God-glorifying things can happen. To that end, I have begun meeting with a group of pastors in our area to begin a conversation about racial reconciliation in our community. Some of the pastors are black and some are white. We are Baptists, Presbyterians, Assemblies of God, Seventh Day Adventists, Methodists, and even a rogue non-denominational Bible Church (guess who!), yet all of us have come to agree on some specific things. You will be hearing more about this in coming days, but for now will you pray for us, that as we include more pastors, we will stay together and stay focused on our goal? Refuge of Grace is a jail ministry and residential program providing hope for determined women in crisis, and when possible their children, by seeking to transform lives, one heart at a time, through the power, grace and truth of Jesus Christ. Madison ConneCt LunCheon The W3 Women s Ministry is hosting a Women s Connect Luncheon, September 11; right after service in the Landing area (where the student ministry meets. Currently all ABFs are meeting here). This will to be a nice luncheon (no charge) hosted by the Women s Ministry as an opportunity for the Madison women to connect and get to know each other better. Ministry opportunities will be presented and a spiritual gift assessment available to help determine where you could best serve. Our current series is on Christology. We will be discussing who Jesus is and why He is the greatest person to ever live.

We will be playing bubble soccer and other amazing activities! We will have Chickfila for dinner ($5)!

During the large group time, we have started a new series where we will go through the entire Bible this year. Come prepared with your Bible, a notebook, and pen!
