INSIDE INFORMATION Women s Ministry Nursing Home Ministry Church Council February Calendar Men s Breakfast College Ministry VBS Planning Meeting Updates & Renovations 11 am Interim Music Minister LifeWay Marriage Events 8:30 am Music Minister Youth Minister Small Groups February is the month we celebrate Valentine's Day. What a great month to demonstrate your love to that special someone in your life. But what do you do? I was listening on the radio and one man thought up the idea of sending one rose on their first Valentine's Day and then increasing it by one each year. Now after forty years plus of marriage, the wife has responded that while forty roses would be impressive, why not demonstrate your love to me in practical ways the other 364 days of the year? Practical, consistent, ongoing; that was her desire for a demonstration of affection. I thought that was a pretty good idea. That does not mean we should forsake the Valentines cards, or a special dinner out, but perhaps consider how we are showing our love to those special others in our lives throughout the year. Come to think of it, what are you doing that is practical, consistent and ongoing to show your love for your Lord? Pastor Charles pastorchas@sbcglobal.net
Hello Happy February all! and to The Women s Ministry Committee of HSBC would like to give you the dates of some upcoming events of interest: February 17, 2016 *A new women s Bible study* based from the book Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds, by Jen Wilkin will be led by Jessica Martin. This study will take us tentatively through the end of our scheduled spring Wednesday evening studies. The book is $10 and there will be a sign-up sheet in the foyer if you are wanting to participate. A total head count will be needed by February 10 to ensure timely arrival of the book order. April 8-10, 2016 *The Women of Joy Conference* in Branson, Missouri! Please send Women s Jessica Austic a message via Facebook or if you are interested in attending. So far we have six spots left and are working on the budget so we can share how much money will be needed to go on the trip to take care of meals, lodging, ticket price, and travel! April 16, 2016 *Grandma, Mommy & Me Tea!* A new twist on a favored HSBC tradition!! We are still hammering out the details on this fun new idea and will keep everyone posted! I might be just a little excited no, scratch that, super excited! At this time we are still researching some alternative options for an organization to accept shoe donations for a good cause as the original we worked through is no longer a viable option. We will keep you updated as we receive information and come to a decision if a new option is found. As always, if there is anyone interested in serving in any capacity with our upcoming Ministry events, please do not hesitate to contact Sasha Cook, Jessica Martin, or me so we can very happily get you plugged in!! We are also trying to keep current on our Facebook page, so please feel free to check that out for information or send us a message there and we will get back to you ASAP! God bless you all and thank you for allowing us to continue to serve, Please pick up your Jessica Austic from the kitchen Would you like to save your pop can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House? There s a collection bin in the foyer. 3 Summary of Church Council Agenda Items Church Council recently met and discussed the following items: Membership Process, Policy, and Brochure A document with the previously discussed concepts outlined was presented. It was noted that once the concepts are agreed upon, the process of how they are implemented will be easier. Once finalized, a possible suggestion was made to canvass every member s home such as has been done for financial campaigns. Concluding that time with a covenant agreement such as at worship@fairgrounds would be ideal. Work will continue and collaboration is invited. Proposed Basic Facility Use Policy It was agreed to present this at The Mission of HSBC Honor God s Truth Share the Gospel Build Believers Care for Others the next business meeting. (This will be presented at the February Business Meeting.) 2016 Nominating Committee One member is considering serving, another will be contacted this month. Phyllis Hamilton, John Kues, and Kay Shelby will be presented at the next business meeting. Proposed Transition Recommendations To make our transition as smooth as possible, a few recommendations were presented and discussed. Recommendations from State of the Church Message Pastor Charles also made recommendations which he will address in his State of the Church message on January 17. They are as follows: 1. We acknowledge that the pastor is not responsible for the primary care of all church members and family, although he is still responsible to provide needed and requested member care. 2. That the deacons be designated by the church as the primary member care body for the church. There s a container in the foyer for your donations. Contributions are donated to the Christian Community Food Depot. 3. We need to adopt policies that give a clear and consistent path to church membership, assimilation into and involvement in the church, including church discipline. 4. We embrace the concept of fewer decisions being made by the church in Business Meeting, and more decisions being made by the elected leaders and staff. (This is a process that will take time to formally work through.) 5. We need to come to agreement on the timing and approach for the interim time and pastor process. 6. That the church accepts Sunday, May 15 as the tentative final day for my pastorate with the church. Numbers 1 & 2 were approved to present at the next business meeting. Items 3-5 will continue to be discussed at future Church Council meetings. If you would like to donate aluminum cans to the Youth, place them in Doug Athon s pickup bed on Sunday mornings, usually parked near the bus garage.

VBS PLANNING MEETING SATURDAY FEBRUARY 20 9:30-10:30 am Multi-Purpose Room This meeting is for anyone with ideas about VBS or willing to serve in VBS. VBS Dates: July 10-14, 2016 Contact VBS Director, Tanya Tatro Updates and Renovations Be alert to exciting changes the next few weeks as the Building and Grounds Committee begins the next phase of updating our facility. A contractor has been hired to paint the sanctuary, and our church decorator has been busy selecting new lighting and window treatments to bring a fresh face to our worship space. Additional work will include bringing the electrical in the basement to code among other projects. Check-in every time you re here! Notes on Worship David Cook, interim music , david.cook.fm@sbcglobal.net At the end of 2015 we asked people from second service to vote on their top favorite songs that we sing during the year. A list of 95 songs was put together that we sing during the year, and the congregation was asked to pick their Top 10 favorite. 69 out of the 95 got at least 1 vote. There were 25 people who gave their input, and the top 5 especially were the ones who rose to the top. The bottom 5 were much closer together. Below you will find the compilation: HSBC s Top 10 Favorite Songs of 2015: #1: God s Not Dead #2: Soul on Fire #3: 10,000 Reasons #4: Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) #5: White Flag #6: Days of Elijah #7: I Will Rise #8: Our God #9: God of This City #10: This is Amazing Grace The purpose of the Church is to glorify God by fulfilling the Great Commandment (36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22: ) and the Great Commission (18Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20). 20).

Contact: Pam Barnett, Sunday Morning Small Groups Director I ve always loved the hymn, Near to the Heart of God. When I researched the history of the hymn, I learned that it was written in Parkville, Missouri. Parkville University in Parkville, Missouri, is one of 38 campuses across the United States and has an enrollment of 17,000 students. It was begun in 1875 by John A. McAfee and Colonel George Park. McAfee had five sons and one daughter who all became involved in the college. One terrible week the two little daughters of John McAfee s son, Howard, died of diphtheria within twenty-four hours of each other. The college family and town were grief stricken. The girl s uncle, Cleland McAfee, a college preacher and choir director, then wrote Near to the Heart of God and his choir sang it for the bereaved family. The hymn was published in October of I have noticed a pattern in the origination of a lot of hymns. So many of them were written during times of hardship or grief. And still today they still provide words of comfort to a hurting world. See you in worship! Jim Barnett, 8:30 am Music Minister musicjim@sbcglobal.net
Welcome to the Spring 2016 semester! Last fall was an amazing show of God's work in the hearts of the youth of HSBC. We kicked of the semester with the opening of our renovated space in the basement. Many long nights over several weeks and countless gallons of paint culminated in a great new space for our kids to gather and grow with each other and with God through His word. Over the course of the semester we saw an amazing influx of new students. The lessons we had learned previously about being bold in talking to our friends about Christ really paid off. Our students were actively inviting their friends from school to join us for Bible study or for other activities we had. We had the opportunity to join with other local youth groups as we participated in the annual See You After the Pole event at the Y in September. The famous HSBC "walking tacos" are always a big hit. As the semester drew to a close, we were seeing more than 20 kids coming to Bible study regularly, we had 21 go to the Newsboys concert in Nov and 23 come to our Fun Night in Dec. Best of all, we had a couple of youth make professions of faith in Christ as Savior. Our Bible study, Holy Vocabulary, challenged us to look deeper at the words we use as Christians and to better understand the attributes and characteristics of God and how that understanding can fundamentally change our hearts towards Christ is another year of promise for us. The Youth Committee is working on a Ministry Philosophy Statement to help guide us as we plan worship, small groups, and activities. This statement will give a clear vision for Youth Ministry at HSBC and provide us with a structure to ensure we are providing a place of fellowship and growth where we can connect with God, with each other, and with our community. We will continue to challenge our understanding of God through the remainder of the Holy Vocabulary study. We had looked at bringing in a guest speaker from the Pure Freedom program last semester, but were unable to sync up schedules so we may revisit that this Spring for a few sessions as well. We are sponsoring a young boy from Mozambique this year (we got his info at the Newsboys concert) and we are encouraging our youth to bring an offering each week in support of this ministry. The sponsorship is $35/month and we will be getting periodic updates from the mission about him. We are using money from our candy machine in the Youth room for this effort as well as aluminum can recycling. The young man's name is Pedro so please keep him in your prayers. We have become very intentional over the last several months to pray for youth in other countries and the world in general. We have a world map vinyl cling on the wall in the Youth room and a student will go to the wall and pray for a specific country each time we meet. If you haven't been down to see our new space, I would encourage you to come and take a look. We are planning a few additional upgrades this year as we replace some aging equipment, but we are so excited to have such an inviting space to bring our friends to learn about Christ. We will be planning for a Youth Sunday on May 1 this year. We had a lot of fun putting one on last year and we would like to see an expansion this year to include more specials and testimonials. Stay tuned for more information on that as well as other fun activities. I have been Youth Minister "part-time" now for 2 years and Interim for nearly a year prior to that. I want to thank Mike Hartman for being there with me every step of the way. His love for Christ and for our Youth are always on display and his counsel and encouragement strengthen me often. David Cook also deserves my thanks for the many contributions he makes to our youth, whether through drama or music or teaching VBS. Ben Austic has assisted in music and worship on a number of occasions as well and I thank him for his heart for ministry. Many others work behind the scenes as well to contribute to the growth in numbers we have seen in youth, but most importantly to the depth of learning and understanding we are gaining of Christ, our Lord and Savior. May God continue to bless our efforts. Tony Keene, Youth Minister tony.keene@sbcglobal.net
