1 Hamilton Street Baptist Church Newsletter Essential Church for all the seasons of life. INSIDE INFORMA NFORMATION Women s Ministry 8:30 am Music Minister Sunday School Girlfriend Gala Adair County Mobile Food Pantry Nursing Home Ministry August Calendar Men s Breakfast Interim Youth & Family Minister Family Nights in the Park Summer Schedule Nursing Home 11 am Music Minister WMU Wednesday Night Programming Worship in the Park Planning Items needed for Special Friends It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. What a summer this has been! We were almost rained out of our annual lakeside baptism and picnic. Almost, but not quite. We were able to help the annual Food for Kids project this year. The Food Pantry ministry has distributed food to over 500 people each month. Work was continuing on our building addition just days before the dedication, but all necessary work and city inspections were completed in time. We have had a great VBS. One of the volunteers said it was the least stressful VBS we have had in a long time. The new Multipurpose Building worked great for stress free and air conditioned recreation. At the first ATSU New Student Welcome downtown, we gave out two cases of HSBC mugs to new students. Summer attendance has been unusually strong. The Sunday night outreach at PC Mills Park has gone well. As you get this newsletter, the mission trip to Stockton will be winding down or will have just been completed. It has been a great summer. It is time to catch our breaths for a week or two. Next up is Worship in the Park. That is probably our most labor intensive event we hold during the year. In advance, I want to thank everyone who will help make this year s event even better. God is at work. May we stay in step with Him. Pastor Charles pastorchas@sbcglobal.net

2 And let us not be weary in w e l l - doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Galatians 6:9 (ASV) It s still the end of July, the temperatures are beginning to fall, just as the sun sets earlier each evening. As you feel and see the season change, do you get as excited as I do? One reason I become more enthusiastic this time of year is because there is so much activity in our city as students and others return and arrive, and at our church as we gear up for fall. Discipleship Fall Bible studies have been selected and leaders are almost in place. Monday Night Bible Study will be using the Beth Moore resource, Living Beyond Yourself, Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit. The study will begin Monday, September 9 at 6:30 p.m. Sherri Bratton will be our hostess. The Wednesday Morning Bible Study which meets at the church from 9:30 11 a.m. will begin Wednesday, September 4. This group will be studying the Francis Chan work, Forgotten God, a study which calls us to embrace the Holy Spirit s work in our lives. Finally, our Wednesday Evening Study will be Gods at War by Kyle Idleman. This study will challenge us with our own modern-day sin of idolatry. The study will meet from 6:30 7:30 p.m. as part of our Wednesday Night Programming. Each of these will be discussed in more detail at our annual fall women s ministry kick-off event, the Girlfriend Gala, on Thursday, August 22. A video promo from each of the authors will be shown, and you will have a chance to look through the study books and sign up for a study. In order to have enough material, please sign up in advance on Facebook at Hamilton Street Baptist Church Women s Ministry, in the foyer or call the church office. Fellowship Save the Date! Thursday, August 22, 6:30 8 pm, for our annual fall women s ministry kickoff the Girlfriend Gala. The Girlfriend Gala s primary purpose is to highlight the fall and winter Bible studies offered, social events and activities scheduled, service, ministry, and prayer projects to be involved in, etc. Its secondary purpose is to provide a fellowship activity where each of you can attend and get to know others from our congregation, perhaps someone(s) from the service you do not attend. Of course, there will be food and fun! Please not only plan to attend, but invite. Invite someone who is under- or un-involved at HSBC. Your guest may be the woman who is interested in finding the right church home. Invite your new neighbor or co-worker so she can see what our women s ministry (and church) has to offer. A sign-up sheet will be in the foyer, and again, you can sign up on Facebook. Service Treating Our Public Servants Well will remain on hiatus during the month of August. There are opportunities for you to give to our friends from abroad who are returning to the States for an extended visit. Please see that article in this newsletter, bulletin announcements, and a sign-up sheet in the foyer for how you can help. With August being the start of school, there also will be opportunities for you to bake cookies for our university students as we attend the TSU Activity Fair and the Downtown Student Welcome. You can also help with the monthly Mobile Food Pantry distribution. Watch for sign-up sheets in the foyer. Ministry Love, Lily continues to donate handmade layette items to each baby and mother who are clients of the Kirksville Lifeline Pregnancy Resource Center. We are also providing the same to those in the Memphis, Mo area. Thank you for your generosity and care for these women and infants. Won t you pray about how God would use you to bless others through this ministry? Are you a crocheter, quilter, knitter or crafter who likes to make baby booties, hats, or blankets? Would you like to donate items or materials, or even learn how to crochet? For more information about Love, Lily, contact Stacy Tucker-Potter. The Higher Hope ministry would like to thank you all for supporting Higher Hope in these last couple of years. Your prayers and support have made it possible for us to share the love of Christ with many hurting women. At present, however, Higher Hope will be taking an indefinite break. We treasure the relationships that we have formed with each woman who reached out to us, but must take a step back from formal ministry at this time due to family and schedule changes. This is a decision that has not been made lightly, and is made with faith in God s leading and care for all involved. Our hearts, prayers, and friendship remain with those who are grieving the loss of a child. Prayer Do you have a specific prayer request? Would you like the women s ministry prayer team to pray for your need? Contact Jane Jackson with your request, and she will discreetly pass it on to our team of prayer warriors Resources There are several books on the women s ministry table in the foyer from which to choose. Find one that fits you and check it out. Facebook Remember to like us on Facebook: Hamilton Street Baptist Church Women s Ministry and Love, Lily. Because harvest season approaches both literally and figuratively, we want to provide our HSBC Family with opportunities for spiritual growth and development through Bible study, ministry, service, and more. We also want to extend these opportunities to women whether they are part of the HSBC family or not. Always feel free to invite and encourage others to join us for any and all of our activities. Kay Shelby, Women s Ministry Director , or kayshelby@sbcglobal.net

3 What Time Is It? Time To Join Choir!! Do you love to lift your voice in songs of praise to the Lord? Do you like to help lead in worship by singing? Then we have just the place for you. Please consider joining us as we begin a new season of singing. We will be preparing songs for Worship in the Park and will present specials twice a month. Also, if you feel led to provide special music, let me know and I will schedule you in. Let s fill the choir loft to over flowing with people and song! See you in worship! Jim Barnett, 8:30 am Music Minister musicjim@sbcglobal.net I can t believe that summer is half over. Where does the time go? I hope everyone has had a time of relaxation and refreshment during these warm months. Sunday School attendance has remained steady this summer. Thank you for being faithful in attendance. If you are not currently connected to a small group or Sunday School class, please let me know and I will point you in the direction of a good match for you and your needs. The purpose of the Church is to glorify God by fulfilling the Great Commandment ( 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:36-40) and the Great Commission ( 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20).

5 We re hoping this year s Worship in the Park will be the best attended so far. To make it easier to invite someone to come with you, pick up a business card (available in the foyer) with Worship in the Park info to hand out. We ve also purchased yard signs which will be available to pick up from the foyer beginning Sunday, August 4. Also, on Sunday, August 11 & 18 youth and adults will be in the parking lot with window markers to transform your vehicle s windows into a moving billboard. This is easily removable by washing. Of course, you will be able to opt out of this option. Many hands make light work and there s much to be done to prepare for our biggest event of the year. Posters Pick up some full or half- sheet fliers from the foyer and pass out to your service/civic/hobby club, post at work, or hand out to friends or family members. 7 Our porch swing has been in storage the last couple of years since we moved from Columbia. I was recently able to install it under the deck at the house we live in now because I finally got the hardware from the Columbia house. What strikes me as I sit here with April and type this article is the joy I feel as I watch the sun setting in the west and my kids playing volleyball together in the yard. As many of you know, the last three years have been the hardest of my adult life. With job loss, financial struggles, and health emergencies, I have often felt imprisoned by life s circumstances. In late June, we finally sold our house in Columbia and I felt an enormous weight lifted off of my shoulders. I have stable employment now and we are starting to make progress on our finances. While I praise God for his work in all of these material issues, I praise Him even more for leading us to Hamilton Street Baptist Church. The friendships we have made here, the outpouring of generosity shown towards us in the depths of our struggles, and the opportunities we have been given to serve have been the highlights of our two years in Kirksville. I strongly believe that God places people in our lives at just the time we need them. I think back to a weekend trip we made in 2011 as we were looking at houses here to rent. We stopped in to have lunch at La Fuentes and saw the Kerby s eating. We stopped to say hello and Joe and Jeda asked if we had looked at any churches yet. They suggested we give HSBC a try...we have gone nowhere else since. The church family we have now at HSBC has been there for us when we needed them most and we thank God for you all. As my role here transitions, I feel joy for the future. As I continue to work with the incredible youth of this church, I know that we will continue to see God s work done here at HSBC. So as I continue to remind my self each day, I leave you with the following passage from Matthew 6: 25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life e? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Tony Keene, Interim Youth & Family Minister tony.keene@sbcglobal.net Would you like to save your pop can tabs for the RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE? 8 Monday - Friday August 5-9 Associational Children s Camp Grand Oaks, Chillicothe Sunday August 25 Worship in the Park Wednesday August 28 TSU Activity Fair Twin Pines Every Tuesday at 9:30 am Highland Crest Monday, August 5, at 9:30 am Recently, I was contacted by a high school friend who was heartbroken. Her marriage was dissolving. Her daughter was struggling. She was looking for a friend. She s not a follower of Jesus Christ and as I considered her situation I thought: how is she going to get through this? There s no peace. There s no assurance. There s no anchor. The words to this worship song flooded my mind: There s a peace I ve come to know/ though my heart and flesh may fail/ there s an anchor for my soul/ I can say It is well. It s not just a song to me. Those aren t just words I sing sometimes on Sunday morning. I have experienced this peace and I m so confident that it s God breathed that I d stand before a firing squad rather than deny it. My prayer for our worship music is that it sinks past the skin and into your life. I pray that the songs we sing are the songs of your life. I pray that in trouble and blessing, wealth and poverty, popularity and persecution you ll have a song to sing that strengthens your faith and glorifies God. I pray that you ll never be left wondering if there s peace or hope and I pray that s due, in part, to our songs. I Will Rise by Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher, Jesse Reeves and Louie Giglio There s a peace I ve come to know Though my heart and flesh may fail There s an anchor for my soul I can say It is well Jesus has overcome And the grave is overwhelmed The victory is won He is risen from the dead And I will rise when He calls my name No more sorrow, no more pain I will rise on eagles wings Before my God fall on my knees And rise There s a day that s drawing near When this darkness breaks to light And the shadows disappear And my faith shall be my eyes And I hear the voice of many angels sing, And I hear the cry of every longing heart, And I hear the voice of many angels sing, And I hear the cry of every longing heart, Ben Austic, 11am Music Minister benaustic@sbcglobal.net WMU Cookbooks Planning your family s back to school lunches or Labor Day cookout?
