INSIDE INFORMA NFORMATION Church Council Women s Ministry 8:30 am Music Minister Mobile Food Pantry November Calendar Men s Breakfast Nursing Home Ministry Family Minister College Student Ministry Youth Minister Men s Monday Night Football Remodel Work Days Operation Christmas Child Advent Devotions Vampires Are Real Several years ago we embarked on an adventure to allow our church to better fellowship together, study together, play together and better minister to our preschoolers. In 2011 we completed a building pledge drive and set a goal of $219,000 as our goal to help support the building project. Ground was broken in October of 2012 and we officially began the time to receive your pledge gifts. The goal was to receive the full $219,000 by October At that time we would re-amortize the loan so that our monthly payments would fit what we are budgeting for building payments. It is now two years later, and we have met our pledge goal of $219,000 one year early! It is amazing how God has blessed our faithfulness and willingness to give. To everyone who has given to our building project, thank you! Now that our building pledge is completed, can people still give to the building fund? Absolutely. If you have not yet completed your pledge, please continue to give. Every additional dollar given will help to pay off the building debt that much earlier. In addition, we are nearing completion of the office/preschool remodel. The preschool classes have all been relocated to their final classroom locations and soon the office remodel and move will be complete. At this point, it looks like we will be able to stay within our original $5,000 goal for this project. Thanks to everyone who has given time, sweat and talents to this project. Now it is time to reach out and to welcome our friends and neighbors, so that the ultimate purpose of these building projects will be realized. That is, that we may use these great facilities to reach others for Christ. Thanks again and praise God! Pastor Charles pastorchas@sbcglobal.net

Summary of Church Council Agenda Items Church Council recently met and discussed the following: OFFICE REMODEL UPDATE The classrooms are finished. There are a few issues remaining with the plumbing. The new office remodel has begun with cutting out two windows in Kay s new office. November is the target date to have everything finished. The loan on the new building is almost ready to be re-amortized. WORSHIP STUDY TEAM UPDATE The team needs to schedule a meeting. NOMINATING COMMITTEE The following members have agreed to serve for 2015 and were approved by Council: Vera Willis, Lana Brown and John Kues. CHURCH DIRECTORY LAYOUT VOLUTEER Pastor Charles is looking for a layout volunteer. HARVEST AMERICA REVIEW We had about 40 in attendance. It was agreed that it was a very evangelistic message. The Mission of HSBC Honor God s Truth Share the Gospel Build Believers Care for Others OCTOBER FALL FEST UPDATE Two work days are scheduled and worker signup sheets are in the foyer. GOOGLE CALENDAR AND OTHER ELECTRONIC MESSAGING SYSTEMS Google won t sync with other systems. It was agreed that an electronic calendar would only work if all the staff used the same calendar and provider. It was agreed to continue using the printed calendar. SUNDAY NIGHT REVIEW Council members filled out a Sunday night worship review survey. The results will be reviewed at the next worship study team meeting. REVISIONING A flow chart of ways to coordinate a church was examined: Individualistic, Flow Chart, and Interconnected. It was agreed that our church has been doing well with the Interconnected way. Each council member was asked to write out a vision for their area of church work. They are to read the church s mission booklet and see if they feel it is still relevant. NOMINATING COMMITTEE Recommends that a church photographer (or 2) be put in place to be the church s historian. A job description would need to be created. They also asked whether mission trip people be approved at business meeting. Council decided that this is not necessary, but mission trip people do need to have current background checks before serving. Check-in every time you re here! The Ladies Lunch on October 4 was a success. Good food and games. Dana Marshall shared about Operation Christmas Child (which is coming up soon) and Jessica, Lillie and Tessa Martin sang a couple of songs. They were accompanied by Ziva (who stole the show from the others). We are now preparing for and looking forward to the Christmas Cookie Exchange on Dec 9 at Kathy Adkins home. The Bible studies are going very well with a good attendance. We are open to suggestions to the Bible studies for the winter session. 3 Give Thanks! Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated primarily in North America. Although it is rooted in the history of the Pilgrims, Thanksgiving is no longer generally considered a religious holiday, but a day to gather with family, stuff ourselves with lots of food, watch football and parades, and be thankful for the blessings of life. Today, most of us celebrate Thanksgiving in warm, comfy homes equipped with all the latest conveniences. But when the Pilgrims sat down to the first Thanksgiving feast at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621, they praised God in the midst of extremely harsh living conditions. By then, after spending only a year in their new homeland, they had lost half of their entire group to illness, starvation, Indian attacks and severe weather. But with unshakable faith in God, the Pilgrims inspired a tradition in their new land that would continue to be observed nearly 400 years later the celebration of Thanksgiving Day. What are you thankful for this year? The Bible says in 1 Chronicles 16:8, Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what He has done. During this Thanksgiving season let s give some serious thought to what we are thankful for and then go to God in prayer and thanksgiving. See you in worship! 5 Family Ministry Making the faith intentional and relevant Aren t birthdays so much fun? I remember when I was a kid, my grandmother would bake me a birthday cake and make it in the shape of a butterfly and put M&M s on it. It wasn t professional by any means, but I always looked forward to having a butterfly cake. It s probably because of that influence, or some cake gene passed that got passed along, or watching too much Cake Boss that I want to bake cool cakes for my kids. I just refuse to buy a boring cake when a fun one can be made instead! In September, Cedric and Skyler turned 6 years old. Having twins means having twice the amount of cake, as we try and treat them the same as if they had been born on separate days. So, I asked what type of cake they wanted. Cedric wanted a dinosaur cake with green icing and Skyler wanted a dog cake. God has blessed me (or thought it would be funny) by giving me just enough creativity to be dangerous. I can t be happy with a plain cake with a plastic dinosaur on top. No I have to go three dimensional! Last year they had a shark out of cupcakes and treasure chest cake, so this year should be no problem. I had already found how to cut the shapes to make the dinosaur. So, I began to bake the cakes. After the boys went to sleep I made up the icing and began cutting the pieces. The dog was really easy it was just a dog face. The dinosaur was much more challenging. It wasn t that difficult, but two cakes in one night are a bit too much. The house was a little warm, and the icing started to melt a little in the tube as well as in my hands, and what started out as beautiful icing on a dinosaur turned into taking my hands and slapping it on the sides in whatever way it would stick! So, there was this nice top and part of a side that looked pretty, and then there were some sides that looked as if, well, like it was put on with my hands! I covered up the cakes and put them in the refrigerator so it would be a surprise, and to prevent the icing from melting off. The next day the boys were so excited about their cakes. They had no idea what they would look like. I was still a little upset that the cake I had tried to make didn t turn out like anything I had wanted it to be. Cedric asked Did you make my dinosaur cake? I replied, Yes, but I m afraid that it doesn t look that good. Cedric then replied, That s ok, Daddy, just as long as you did your best. I honestly really did do my best, and yet I was beating myself up because it didn t look perfect. Cedric said that to me because I had told him that many times. It really humbled me because sometimes we get caught up in the perfection and forget that perfection isn t what it s all about. Do we model that it s more important to do our best than to match what someone else does? Or are we more caught up in trying to make our kids have a certain image? That can roll over into other areas, such as what we wear, what we look like, how we write, how we draw, etc. Kids start to compare themselves to perfection and find they fall short, and it can keep them from striving onwards. That can impact our spiritual life, too, as kids can think that they don t read their Bible like someone else, or pray like someone else, etc, they may just give up because they can t be perfect. We have our kids art on the refrigerator, as well as in a frame that gets changed out from time to time. It s not perfect by any means, but they ve done their best and they did it with all their heart, and it s beautiful. I think back to my grandmother s cake she did her best and she put her heart into it. That was more important than perfection. In today s perfect picture society, an important value to instill in our children is doing their best and doing it with all their heart. After all, isn t that what God said to do? Love the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind? It won t be perfect this side of heaven, but shouldn t we do it the best we can? That s a value worth passing on! 6 The purpose of the Church is to glorify God by fulfilling the Great Commandment ( 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:36-40) and the Great Commission ( 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20).

November Fall is in full swing. The leaves have changed colors in preparation for their final descent. Soon the trees will be barren and another winter will be upon us. As bleak as that may sound, November also brings about a season of Thanksgiving. The early English settlers on this continent gave thanks for the bounty God had provided through the harvest and gave us an example to follow. The early settlers had faced enormous hardships in their short time in America and at many times were in peril for their lives. They gave thanks and acknowledged that without God s grace and provision, they would have perished. With all of our modern technology and self-reliance, how much better off are we than those early settlers? I would say that we are not far removed from them. As I watch the news and hear folks in the community discuss current events, I am reminded that we continue to live in a fallen world. Disease, war, money issues, and death these are not the types of things we give thanks for. I listen to the Youth as we discuss current events and I hear real concern in their voices; concern for their futures and the world they are inheriting. I realize that all sounds bleak as well, but we can find comfort knowing that we can also enjoy a season of Thanksgiving. As Christian, our hope and purpose is not found in this world around us. As I teach the Youth, our hope is Eternal and is found only in Jesus Christ. But even in this world, we can give thanks for God s grace and provision. I am thankful for many things right now the love that Jesus continues to pour on me, my amazing wife and family, the opportunity to serve in this church, the wonderful job HE has provided, and a place to now call home. As Thanksgiving approaches, look for ways to thank God for all He does for you everyday, from the routine to the miraculous. As the Psalmist shares with us in Psalm 95:1-7 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Tony Keene, Youth Minister tony.keene@sbcglobal.net Saturday, November 1 We will be preparing the new offices for their move. Saturday, November 1, after the Men s Rosie s Northtown 8 am, we ll meet back at the church. There are some small projects to be completed. We ll be moving the workroom to its permanent location and assembling new furniture. Many hands make light work. Don t just bring your tools, bring your work buddy.

Do you watch the news and wonder what you can do to help children in crisis situations around our world? What can we do to minister to typhoon survivors, to victims of civil war living in refugee camps, to orphaned and neglected children? First and foremost, we should be praying, trusting that God is at work. We can also allow God to work through us to reach these children by giving shoebox gifts to Operation Christmas Child. A total of 9,985,210 children in 112 countries received shoebox gifts collected in 2013 by Operation Christmas Child. Worldwide, Samaritan s Purse has distributed 113,705,780 shoebox gifts since In just the last four years, over 1.1 million children have prayed to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior through Operation Christmas Child s follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. These numbers are incredible, but the most important number is ONE. Every ONE shoebox gift matters, because every ONE child is precious to God! OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD How many shoebox gifts will you pack this year? Will you pack at least ONE more than you packed last year? Or will you donate individual items that we will use to pack shoeboxes? Will you donate a sack of toothbrushes, a bundle of washcloths, a jump rope, a doll, or a ball? Or will you donate money to be used to pack a shoebox or to help with shipping costs? Most importantly, every ONE of us can pray for this ministry and specifically for the children who will receive these boxes as well as their families. Brochures describing how to pack your shoeboxes are available in the foyer. Gift suggestions are listed in the brochure, as well as a list of items to not include. Please notice that the instructions in the brochure ask you to donate $7 or more per shoebox to help cover shipping costs, if possible. If you would like to participate in this project, please place your packed shoeboxes in the foyer by Sunday, November 16. If you would like to make a money donation, you can make your check payable to HSBC and designate it for Operation Christmas Child. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Tanya Tatro. ADVENT DEVOTIONALS Coming soon there will be some Advent devotions printed out in the foyer. The devotions will also be available on-line, and the focus is on the names of Jesus. What makes it really interesting is that they have been written by members of Hamilton Street Baptist Church. There are people from both services who have written devotions, and our youngest one is in 8 th grade and our oldest one is, well, way older than that! I am so thankful to everyone who helped make the devotions a possibility! It seems early to be thinking about Advent, but if we don t plan for it, we may not do it. The first Sunday of Advent this year is November 30. David Cook, Family Minister david.cook.fm@sbcglobal.net

Vampires Are Real: Loving Those Who Suck the Life Out of You by John Shepherd, pastor of River Oaks Community Church, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. We all have vampires in our lives. I m not talking about the fictional creatures with pale skin and sharp fangs. I m referring to the very real people who suck the life out of us. They may live in your town, across the street, maybe even inside your church or home. So, how do you love the people who drain you? How is it possible to obey our King s command to love everyone, including those who drain the joy out of our lives? First, it would serve us well to understand what Jesus command to love everyone does not mean. Unconditional love for everyone does not grant everyone unlimited access to my life. Healthy people live with relational boundaries in place depending on the nature and trust level of the relationship. For example, I love my wife unconditionally; therefore, she has unrestricted access to every area of my life. She has a key to our house, even full access to our bedroom and my laptop. I also love my friend Jeffery unconditionally, but he does not have a key to my house or access to my bedroom (for which we are both thankful!). That is not the nature of our relationship. Bottom Line: Healthy relationships have boundaries, while unhealthy ones do not. Second, I need to remember that the Bible says I m a vampire, too. Romans 5:8 says that while I was still a sinner (that is, a vampire who sucked the life out of God and those around me), Christ died for me. Remembering that I suck, too, helps me be more patient with those vampire people who suck the life out of me. Third, give yourself permission to say, No, to people who drain you. Jesus limited the access He gave to the vampires in His life the Pharisees. And if Jesus set boundaries with vampires, so should we. Fourth, say yes to spending time with people who refresh you a lot! There are certain people who refresh us, and the Bible says it s right and necessary to spend time with them. One such relational refresher for the Apostle Paul was Philemon. In Philemon 7, Paul writes, Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints. Lastly, remember to eat before you go. Let me give you an illustration. Recently, my wife and I were invited for dinner in the home of a couple in our church. Since we had no idea whether either one of them could cook, I decided to eat a snack before we got in the car to go to their home. Fortunately, one of our hosts turned out to be an amazing cook, and that evening in their home turned out to be most enjoyable. God used that evening to teach me an important lesson: Before I leave the house every day to step into a world filled with vampires, I should spend time with my Heavenly Father and feast on His Word. When I am full of Him and His presence in my life, then I am not expecting others to fill my life with love, peace, and joy. My heart is already full when I get there, and I am better able to serve, love, and lead others toward God and His dream for their lives. This article appeared on LifeWay s Facts and Trends website:
