2 Mid-South Baptist Woman s Missionary Union The main focus of WMU is to educate and involve preschoolers, children, youth, and adults in the cause of Christian missions. Everything we do in the church, the association, the state, and nationally is focused on missions. How will WMU benefit my church? WMU creates a window to the world. Churches with WMU are more likely to pray and give to missions needs. WMU develops leaders for missions efforts among all age groups. WMU provides a lifetime of loving and learning about God s great love for all people. The purpose of Mid-South Baptist Woman s Missionary Union is to encourage and assist churches within the association to engage in missions learning and involvement that enables them to fulfill the Great Commission. How can Mid-South Baptist WMU assist your church? Partnering with you to provide training in missions education. Strengthening already existing mission involvement. Provide information about resources and missionary speakers. Teach mission leaders how to plan events, such as; prayer retreats, mission fairs, mission trips, and mission involvement projects. 3 Mid-South Baptist Woman s Missionary Union What Does WMU Teach? WMU is about missions, so everything in WMU seeks to teach about missions. Whether preschool, children, student, or adult resources, all WMU materials and opportunities for the church are centered around six specific objectives. 1. Learning about Missions WMU accepts the responsibility to educate believers about missions. This means teaching the biblical calling to missions for every Christian and explaining how involvement in missions is a part of a person's discipleship, regardless of the age. By sharing stories about missionaries, individuals learn about other cultures and how God is moving around the world. WMU also teaches all age levels how they can be on mission for God right where they live. 2. Supporting Missions Supporting missions means giving to missions through one s time, talents, and financial resources. WMU teaches the discipline of giving and how the Bible stresses the importance of giving for discipleship. Additionally, churches are led to make missions so visible in their church that others may be called into full-time missions work. 3. Praying for Missions Believers understand the power of prayer. When our loved ones are suffering or crises occur, we are quick to turn to prayer. Through WMU, believers are taught to apply the power of prayer for the spread of the gospel. Not only are they taught the specific needs of missionaries and people groups, believers are taught how to pray for current social issues and how to develop an active prayer life. Those in WMU are given daily prayer reminders so they can engage in daily prayer for missionaries and missions needs. 4. Engaging in Missions Not only does WMU seek to increase a person s understanding of missions, WMU helps that person get involved in missions, because doing missions is just as important to the discipleship process as learning. This is where people can connect the why of missions with the how. Every month, groups are given missions projects that relate to what they are learning from missionaries. These may be local projects, adopting ministries, collecting supplies for missionaries, or working with the church to identify and lead in missions efforts right there. 5. Involvement in the Church and Denomination Missions is about bringing new believers into a relationship with God, supported by other believers. All believers need a community of faith, and WMU seeks to be supportive of churches and associations as they reach their communities. Missions education is a piece of total discipleship, so it fits well into a worship and discipleship context. WMU encourages all people to be active in their church, supporting the church and church staff both through their time and resources. 6. Developing a Missions Lifestyle As a person learns about missions, supports missions, prays for missions, engages in missions, and gets involved in the church, he or she develops a missional lifestyle. A person living a missional lifestyle sees needs when others don t. He or she sees opportunities to share the love of Christ when others are afraid. That person develops compassion and boldness in his or her faith, and that person understands his or her part in the body of believers. As WMU materials are being developed, they are evaluated by these objectives, 2

6 BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRIES OF MEMPHIS The Baptist Collegiate Ministries of Memphis (BCMM) exists to mobilize Memphis area students and churches to make mature, missional disciples of Jesus who become engaged members of a local church. As a campus-based ministries, BCMM exists as the mission arm of the local church to college students. (901) (cell) or bshaw@tnbaptist.org Current needs: Churches/groups to provide a meal at our weekly Free Lunch Thursday program. This is our most consistent gathering of students and serves as the front-door of our ministry. Free Lunch Thursday are attended by an average of 60 students in the fall and 40 students in the spring. This is a great way for your church to relationally connect with UT-HSC students. Lunches can be provided for as little as $2/person. The students always appreciate churches who make the effort to come to campus to get to know them. Churches/groups to sponsor Study Nights at the BCM. This semester we are opening our building after hours a few times a month for students to study for exams. We would love to have churches send snacks or other goody bags as an encouragement to students as they study. A church to partner with to provide a dental/health clinic in the spring. Our students love to serve! Local service projects are also a great way for our ministry to connect with students who won t attend anything else we provide. Last year half of the students who served through our local service projects were previously uninvolved in our ministry. A good percentage of them were also not Christians. Partnering with a church to provide service to the community helps your church reach out to a specific neighborhood, gives our students practical experience and helps us establish a relational connection with lost students. Churches/groups to help with facility projects at our building. We are currently in the midst of a multiyear initiative to update the look and feel of our building. We would love to find groups to help us with projects ranging in complexity from organizing storage space to plumbing work and everything in -between. (901) Cell: or The BCM at the University of Memphis exists to connect University students to Christ and to His local church. We are an extension of the local churches on the University of Memphis campus and we serve as their missionaries to reach and disciple students and give them a heart for missions. God has given us opportunities to minister and share with people from multiple countries who are Muslims, Hindus, Agnostic, and more. These students are hungry for hope and for purpose in life. The students in leadership have done a super job of relating to people who have not had any contact with the church or with Christians. We are intentionally going and developing relationships in the dorms, on campus, in the classroom, and in the cafeteria in order to love people and express to them the forgiveness and joy that comes from knowing Christ. Opportunities for Volunteers: Provide free lunch to students as an outreach(350 people on average). Partner on Mission trips by reducing costs, sending adults with us, or helping with transportation, organizing aspects of trips, etc. Provide opportunities for students to share in worship services about missions, lead worship services, lead Disciple Now weekends, or speak for special events. Assist in repairing or enhancing the facilities. Assist in providing meals for special events or groups. Sewing groups to sew couch cushions. Donations/Needs: We need churches and individuals to include the BCMM in their monthly BUDGETS so that: We can pay interns and staff to establish new BCM work on Memphis campuses like: Southwest (approximately 10,000 students enrolled) CBU (23% of students claim Baptist as religious preference) Rhodes (No Baptist work on campus) Others (Crichton, Lemoyne-Owen, etc.) We can hire an administrative associate with responsibilities in: Communication (Newsletters, websites, correspondence) Database management of students, churches, and alumni Finances Clerical and more We need churches, businesses, and individuals to support Mission experiences for our students through financial gifts, prayer, opportunities to share about experiences, and encouragement of student participants. 6

(901) nitaway0631@att.net Our purpose is to promote and advance the welfare of the hospital through good ministry and service projects to the patients at: Baptist Memorial Hospital, (BMH), 6019 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, 6225 Humphreys Blvd., Memphis Baptist Memorial Hospital, 1500 W. Poplar Ave., Collierville Baptist Rehabilitation Center, 2100 Exeter Rd., Germantown We meet on the first Friday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Baptist Memorial Hospital For Women, 6225 Humphreys Blvd., on the main floor. We truly appreciate your help. Our projects are funded solely by WMU organizations and/or church contributions. Any donations can be sent to our Treasurer: Sandra Mayfield, 3144 Knightway St., Memphis, TN NEW TESTAMENT DELIVERY: Small, white New Testaments are delivered on Monday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. to mothers of newborn babies by volunteers. Some months we have 325+ babies. This gift is made possible through contributions ($3.00 each) to the White Testament Fund. This makes a sweet memorial or honorarium. There seems to always be a need for someone to deliver New Testaments each month. Please call Chris Azlin ( ) at the BMH for Women to volunteer to pass out New Testaments. NEWBORN/NEONATAL Church sewing groups can make day gowns for everyday use (snaps only, no ties or Velcro), Easter & Christmas holiday totes, sewn or crocheted receiving blankets (36x36), and crocheted hats and booties. SERVICE PATIENTS/REHAB These small & large items listed are needed year round: toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs (regular or large tooth) for men and women, hairbrushes, deodorant, disposable razors, hand lotion, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner. Sock footies for men and women (with rubber soles), lap covers (at least 39x45), Walker pockets, Find-A-Word Puzzle & Crossword Puzzle Books, pajamas (men and women sizes), pen & note pads, sweat pants & sweat shirts (M, L, XL, XXL), and T-shirts (M, L, XL, XXL). Please DO NOT send used items or items from casinos. ONCOLOGY Needs are handmade turbans (cotton or terry), small 12x15 pillows (also used for C-section & hysterectomy patients, heart-shaped pillows, and drain bag holders. CHILDREN/PEDIATRICS We always need handmade toys for giving to the children who enter through Emergency or for one day surgery. Toys for Pediatrics are hand sewn double-stitched with safety eyes and noses or painted features. Also elbow splints are needed for children who have facial surgery. Also needed are children clothes, all sizes, to be worn home when their clothes have been damaged, for example, ER treatment. MAGAZINES Men s and women s magazines, no older than 6 months old, are needed for the waiting rooms. Please mark through address with permanent marker. 10 CAMPERS ON MISSION TENNESSEE CHAPTER TENNESSEE BAPTIST CONVENTION Contact Person: Raymond Burton West Tennessee Coordinators (901) Reed Circle Drummonds, TN Campers on Mission provides a unique opportunity for you to enjoy the adventure of camping, while living out your Christian faith to witness and offer ministry to others. Campers on Mission (COM) is a national fellowship of Christian campers who desire to share their faith as they go. The Special Mission Ministries of the North American Mission Board sponsor the organization. The Tennessee Baptist Convention has an active chapter. Membership is open to Christian campers of all Christian denominations and requires no dues or membership fees, only a willingness to join other campers in fellowship and service. Whether you are a tent camper, a backpacker, an RV er, or a trailer camper a seasonal camper, a weekend camper, or a full-timer, a retired couple, young family, or single individual, there is a role for you as a part of the COM family. As campers relate their Christian faith to fellow campers, God s love and power shines through their conversations and actions. The nature of a camper s Christian faith and the informality of the camping lifestyle make personal ministry a natural. The Tennessee Campers on Mission Chapter meet twice a year (spring and fall). These meetings offer opportunities for fellowship and planning. Various mission projects are also presented and discussed. Typical service projects include helping with Backyard Bible clubs, Vacation Bible School, campground ministries, booths at fairs with tracts, and providing labor for construction projects. The construction projects include building mission churches, repairing/remodeling churches and youth camps. As larger projects are undertaken, other COM members or state chapters may work together to complete the tasks. Campers are in a unique position to help meet mission needs. (901) or (901) midsouthcwjc@gmail.com Mid-South Christian Women s Job Corps is a non-profit organization that concentrates on giving women a hand up to self-sufficiency by a customized program that includes: mentoring, Bible study classes, job readiness classes, GED tutoring, computer skill classes, life skills training, parenting, and nutrition classes. This is accomplished through pairing participants with volunteer mentors and providing a customized one-on-one program which may include: Bible study, mentoring, job readiness/life skill class, GED tutor, and computer skills class for the participants. Our goal is to personally share Christ s redemptive love with women through mentor relationships and Bible study, as we give the participant a hand up toward self-sufficiency. Our purpose is to equip women with basic life skills necessary for self-sufficiency within her environment. These may include seeking, obtaining, and maintaining employment; financial management, accessing adequate housing, transportation, childcare, and medical care. With the support of area volunteers, MSCWJC s goal is to break the cycle of poverty, be it financial or poverty of spirit. Volunteer Opportunities: MSCWJC welcomes volunteers in many areas. Most MSCWJC volunteers donate between 1 to 2 hours each week to MSCWJC participants. Although most volunteer opportunities require no previous training, we do ask that you meet the following qualifications if interested in volunteering: MSCWJC Volunteer Qualifications: A Christian woman: with a heart to serve who consistently honors commitments who is accepting of diversity and is non-judgmental who is empathetic, open-minded, and willing to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally who cares for others who has strong interpersonal skills who maintains confidences prior experience working with women helpful, but not required Since 2001, Mid-South CWJC has assisted women one on one to break the cycle of poverty by offering them, A Hand Up. (901) (Cell) (901) Church Without Doors meet at 1:00 p.m. each Sunday afternoon and are located in front of the Fed Ex Forum, Fourth St. and Beale, at Robert R. Church Park next to the Historic First Baptist-Beale downtown Memphis. What must it be like to have a desire to worship the Lord and have nowhere to go! Not because there s a shortage of churches, but because your clothes aren t clean, or you have no transportation. This is one of the challenges of being homeless, not just unchurched. The Church Without Doors ministry is an outreach to the homeless in Memphis. In 1998, Rev. and Mrs. Stanley Williams started spending their Sunday afternoons ministering to the homeless of downtown Memphis. This ministry is an outdoor-open air street ministry. Weekly services consist of prayer, praise, and the preaching of the Word and invitation to receive Christ. Food and clothing are distributed after the services and one-on-one ministry is continued. Mid-South Baptist WMU and Churches have made a commitment to support this ministry by providing 150 lunches. Please call Sammy or Betty Armstead if your church would be willing to help in this ministry to feed both the body and the soul The meal can be a brown bag lunch and beverage or a onedish meal (I.e. soup, spaghetti, stew). There is electricity available and portable serving tables can be set up. There are additional opportunities your church may participate: Leading the service preceding the meal Bring your puppet team Your youth group to minister A musical group there s even a PA system if you need it. Tracts and Bible donations, passed out prior to or after the service Donations of funds to purchase food for those Sundays and Thanksgiving where no church has volunteered Equipment maintenance/repair/fees permits, postage, office rental fee, telephone, etc. and office supplies, printer cartridges, and paper for ministry reports. Donations of funds to pay storage fees, $49.00 a month Every Second Sunday we need someone to help serve lunch. Matthew 25:40b KJV Tennessee Baptists have been directly involved in ministering to people in times of disaster since the late 1970 s. Some churches and associations own and operate their own disaster response equipment. This equipment is used throughout the year for various ministry opportunities other than disaster response. It is also made available to respond to disasters elsewhere in Tennessee and throughout the United States. Current response teams include: Command Center, Communications, Chaplaincy, Feeding, Laundry, Recovery Teams: Chainsaw/Mud Out/Flood Recovery/Rebuild, Shower, Temporary Child Care, and Water Purification. Opportunities for Volunteer: Train to be a part of our response teams Donations/Needs: Donate money towards response needs. (901) Bringing hope to the people of our community with the love of Jesus! First Baptist Church is an outreach ministry center for the needy people in and around this part of Fayette County. We are part of the Mississippi River Ministry. Our mission is to reach out to people in poverty with the Gospel and also to help meet the physical needs that so easily keep them in an oppressed condition. We have found that as we help meet physical needs, the people are more open to hear about the love of Christ. We are in need of churches to sponsor the Gallaway Ministries by choosing a month to collect items for our Ministry Center. Most of all, could you please pray for the First Baptist Gallaway as we answer the Call of God to reach out in His Name to the Hurting and Needy people of Gallaway. God blessed a weekly Bible Study to develop into a mission church at Bent Tree. Our first worship service was held inside of a two-bedroom apartment at Bent Tree. As we grew spiritually and physically, we began to have services inside the Club House. In April of 2002, we were blessed to move into a doublewide trailer that was provided by our sponsor church, Faith Baptist. We have a Children in Action group that visits two different nursing homes on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. It was formed in the fall of 1991 with the express mission of winning as many people to Christ in as short a time as possible, while watching for the imminent return of Christ. Since 1987 over 52,000 people have asked Jesus to save them as a result of their outreach. Outreach is multi-faceted, including street witnessing, revivals and crusades. Under the RTEA banner is the Inner-City Outreach Center, Miracle Baptist Church, The Promised Land Camp and the new Miracle House Ministry. Why the need for FIT? One-half of all live births in Memphis/Shelby County are to unmarried women. Also, there are up to 10,000 homeless persons in Memphis/Shelby County alone. One-third of those are women and children with two-thirds of these being children birth to 5 years of age. The level of poverty in Memphis, which is higher than in any other county in Tennessee, is statistically much higher for women and children. FIT is the only program of its kind in Shelby County serving homeless, pregnant women and their children in transitional housing for up to two years. FIT also provides the following services at no cost to the families served: Duplex or apartment to live in with their children for up to two years (called transitional housing). Life Skills classes and training to equip the women to live successfully on their own (in areas such as parenting, financial matters, employment/career, etc.). Counseling to address relational and personal issues. Mentors to assist them in their journey. Opportunity to come to know Jesus. Case management services. Chaplain Services. We provide a variety of adult classes to build English and life skills, job skills, etc., kindergarten readiness for preschoolers, as well as, practical assistance in navigating American life. Such as, understanding bills, transportation to doctor visits, appointments and grocery store, etc. In all of these services we make every effort to shine the light of Christ and establish trusting relationships that allow us to share the love message of Jesus with refugees who haven t hear. Many come from the 10/40 window. We also have a significant opportunity to love and support our Christian brothers and sisters who represent the persecuted church in these same parts of the world. Volunteer Opportunities: Many volunteers are needed to teach and tutor in our adult and preschool classes in areas such as English, handwriting, life and job skills, American history, computers. Other needs are for career counselling, skilled labor workshops, transportation to and from classes and appointments, prayer, marketing, fundraising, grant writing, program development, project management, and special projects. 29 BAPTIST GLOBAL RESPONSE Bap st Global Response (BGR) is a global Southern Bapst relief and development organizaon with a heart for seeing the poor and suffering have the opportunity to experience a full and meaningful life. We respond to people with crical needs in the areas of food security, health crises and threats to their quality of life. These needs may arise from acute (disasters) and/or chronic (hunger, poverty, etc.) threats. Our objecves: To mobilize the influence, prayer, human, and financial resources of Southern Bapsts for relief and development worldwide. To equip and connect southern Bapsts with viable relief and development fields worldwide. To enhance Southern Bapst relief and development worldwide in a way that complements field workers and strategies. To lead Southern Bapsts in celebraon of their relief and development efforts in a way that glorifies God. To help people physically and spiritually. Specific BGR projects that churches can get involved in: The BGR In Home Care Kit is a compilaon of medical and hygiene supplies that BGR is asking churches, groups, or individuals to provide to assist caregivers who are taking care of home-bound, terminally ill paents. Items in this kit will make the caregivers tasks much easier, but more importantly will ease the suffering of the ones affected by the illness. The BGR In Home Care Kit consists of a 5 gallon, heavy duty bucket with a sealable lid. The 2008 pilot phase for the In-Home Care Kit Project ended successfully with almost 1400 kits finding their way to Zambia and South Africa. This year, our goal is to provide 5,000 more kits to help 5,000 more families in need. BGR asks you to consider joining us in reaching this goal. By pu<ng together at least one kit, you will help us provide a physical and spiritual touch to those in Sub-Saharan Africa who are dying from AIDS and other illnesses. If she desires to explore an adoption plan. Life Choices assists her by helping her choose an adoptive family through our full service statelicensed adoption agency. They appealed to the conscience of Memphians during the fight for civil rights, which was reaching its peak in Memphis. The Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) was founded in 1968 to find a solution for poverty and racial division in Memphis. In an unprecedented cooperative effort by church leaders and laypersons, the seed was planted for an organization that would thrive when every external force seemed determined to defeat it. Early in 1968, Rabbi James Wax and the Memphis Ministers Association submitted An Appeal to Conscience to The Commercial Appeal. The widespread reaction among Memphians was that these church leaders had no business addressing social issues. In February of that year, the sanitation workers strike began, highlighting the injustices of low wages and poor working conditions. When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on a trip to Memphis to address the strike, the fury, grief and mistrust that followed widened the chasm between the races. Following Dr. King s death, area churches intent on healing the city s wounds realized they would have to come together to accomplish anything. In September of 1968, MIFA was born. 58 International Mission Study 2016: NORWAY It's a land of dramatic Nordic landscapes with lush meadows and forested hills, icy glaciers and rushing waterfalls, deep fjords and snow-capped peaks. 59 Objectives of WMU in the Church Thousands of churches have WMU and its missions education organizations. Have you seen two churches that conduct their WMU work in exactly the same way? How about two Mission Friends groups? Two Acteens groups? Two Women on Mission groups? WMU provides a framework for how missions education should look and operate within the church. Currently, we do this through six objectives that shape WMU s holistic approach to missions learning and involvement. The framework for all our organizations is firmly based upon the objectives for WMU in the church. 1. Pray for missions is communication with God on behalf of missions work, the people involved in doing it, and the people who need to know and accept God s redeeming love. 2. To engage in mission action is to perform redemptive, loving service in the name and spirit of Christ for people of special need or circumstance, and sharing the gospel with them. Mission action is also responding to social and moral issues. To witness is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with another person and give that person an opportunity to confess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. 3. Learn About Missions Missions is the work of God through the church by which the gospel of Jesus Christ is extended in word and deed to all the people in the world. 4. Support Missions To support missions means to promote an interest in or the cause of missions and missionaries in order to keep the mission of God going. 5. Develop spiritually toward a missions lifestyle means to increase one s knowledge and understanding that results in a growing and maturing application of one s life in relationship with God, which leads to a personal response to opportunities for mission action and witness, praying regularly for those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, missions personnel sharing the gospel locally and globally, a broadened understanding of God s world and His people, and using one s resources and skills to carry out the mission of God or to enable others to do so. 6. Participate in the work of the church and denomination means to take part in or contribute to the accomplishment of God s work through the activities of the church or groups with which the church cooperates to carry out the mission of God. These activities are accomplished through the local church and in partnership with the association, state convention, national convention, and other Great Commission partners. 58

61 Churchwide Missions Education Woman s Missionary Union (WMU) leads the entire congregation to be involved in missions through missions activities, events, and projects. Ongoing WMU age-level organizations WMU age-level organizations provide ongoing missions learning opportunities that carry out the six church WMU objectives. They are: Mission Friends preschool boys and girls from birth through kindergarten. The quarterly leadership resource is Mission Friends Leader. Girls in Action girls grades 6 11 or in grades 1 6. The bimonthly leadership resource is GA Leader. The bimonthly resource for girls is GA World. Royal Ambassadors boys grades 6 11 or in grades 1 6. The bimonthly leadership resource is RA Leader. The bimonthly resource for boys is RA World. Children in Action SM boys and girls aged 6 11 or in grades 1 6. The bimonthly leadership resource is Children in Action Leader. Acteens girls ages or in grades Acteens members assist in planning their missions experiences. The quarterly adult leadership resource is Acteens Leader. The Mag is the monthly magazine for members. Challengers boys ages or in grades Challengers Leader is the yearly adult curriculum resource. Youth on Mission SM youth or in grades The Youth on Mission Plan Book is an annual curriculum resource for adult leadership. Women on Mission women ages 18 and up. Having multiple groups meets the interests and needs of women of all ages. Missions Mosaic is the monthly magazine for Women on Mission. An additional help for leaders is Women on Mission Planner. Sisters Who Care is the African American expression of Women on Mission. mymission SM young women. Their resources are found at Adults on Mission SM all adults (women and men). The Missions Plan Book is the resource for Adults on Mission. Families on Mission is WMU s approach to missions education.
