Week One notes It would be nice if you invited me to come to the grocery store with you when you go. Really? A simple trip to the grocery store? I couldn t believe it could be that simple, but that was what one international woman suggested as a practical and effective way to reach out to an international neighbor. She wasn t asking for a special trip or lots of fanfare, just an invitation to come alongside an American when she made her next trip to the grocery store. Buying groceries in a new country can be confusing and a little frustrating, but having a friend there as a guide can make the trip much easier. I m tempted to think God s plan can t be that simple, but when our ordinary days are lived out in the power of the Holy Spirit, daily tasks become an opportunity to see God at work. People from all over the world have made Mississippi their home. Some have been here for 30+ years; others have arrived as international student on a university campus this semester. Whether they ve been here thirty years or thirty minutes, they ve been here long enough for us to know they are our neighbors. Do you remember the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10? Jesus called the Samaritan and the man in need of mercy neighbors even though they had just met on the road. And Jesus tells us to Go and do likewise (Luke 10:37). Go and do likewise. It s a simple command, yet one that cannot be completed without God s Spirit at work within us. As believers in Christ, we've been given the awesome privilege of sharing Christ s love with others. Sometimes this takes place in an afterschool tutoring program with a child who needs help learning to read on her grade level. Sometimes it takes place in celebrating the accomplishment of a new English speaker who passes a citizenship test. Sometimes it's keeping a humble spirit so that a man who needs to learn how to read has the confidence to approach you to ask for help. Sometimes it s opening the door of your heart and home to welcome in a stranger who quickly becomes a friend. All the time it s pointing people to Jesus, telling the wonderful story of redemption that only God can write. An international friend told me that what he is most excited about in heaven is that there are no borders. We won t be separated into countries there. We will praise God under one banner the banner of His love lifted over us.
notes Pray for people in your sphere of influence who have no knowledge of Jesus as their Lord. When you change clothes, pray for the countries cited on your clothing labels. Identify and learn about the pockets of people in your own community. Buy an up-to-date world map and become familiar with the location of nations. Participate in your church in developing a relationship with a church outside your cultural, ethnic or socioeconomic group. Learn another language. Develop a friendship with an international student. Get out of your comfort zone by putting yourself in a trust environment. Participate in a short-term mission experience outside of your comfort area. Visit a church where the Christian faith is celebrated in a cultural life or language different than your own.
Week Two Every year near the end of September, Deaf Baptists meet for the Mississippi Baptist Conference of the Deaf (MBCD) at Camp Garaywa Conference Center for a weekend of Bible study, worship, workshops and Christian fellowship. MBCD is a Christian organization sponsored by Mississippi Baptists and composed of Deaf persons, interpreters and Deaf ministry workers from Mississippi Baptists Churches. Formerly known as the Baptist Deaf Workers Seminar, it was formally organized in 1988 and has met every fall since its organization. There are many deaf in Mississippi who live where there is no church with an interpreter in their community. For these deaf people, MBCD is a time and place where they can worship in their culture and language. The language for the deaf is American Sign Language (ASL) which is not based on English but has its own syntax and form. When the deaf gather with old friends using ASL, the fellowship is natural and easy, and they communicate in their heart language making new friends and renewing old friendships in a Christian environment. The weekend includes Bible Study for the deaf, taught by deaf pastors from Southern Baptist churches, in their heart language and workshops for interpreters to improve their skills and certification. There are also worship services where the gospel is presented, and opportunities given to receive Christ and or have special prayer for special needs and families. Through the Margaret Lacky State Mission Offering, Deaf people are given the opportunity to worship in their heart language and make commitments to Jesus Christ in a language they understand. MBCD is an event Christian Deaf of all churches look forward to attending each year. Is your church demonstrating an openness to multi-housing community residents? Would you be open, as a group, to develop a relationship with a multihousing community manager? Circle the ministries you could do in multi-housing communities: Back yard Bible Club Vacation Bible School Weekly Bible study Life-coaching Sewing Cooking Special interest classes: Sports camps Cook-out Ice Cream party Counseling ministry Parenting Financial planning Discuss the fact that 95% of multi-housing residents are unchurched. Consider and pray about starting a multi-housing community church. What is the official name of the Mississippi ministry to the deaf? What is the language of the deaf?
Discuss the significance of deaf people being taught in their heart language. Week Four Multi-housing residents are growing across Mississippi. We are told the percentage of multi-housing residents is now at 15.5%+ for a total population of 463,173+. These multi-housing communities represent a diversity of people who need the compassion of local Mississippi Baptist churches. Estimates are that 95% of the multi-housing residents are unchurched. This means at least 440,001 unchurched Mississippians live around us in multi-housing communities. These residents are open to ministries and friendships. Thousands are open to the gospel. Managers of multi-housing communities want and need the help of churches to improve the lives of residents. The opportunities for ministries to the communities include sports camps, Vacation Bible Schools, weekly Bible studies, cookouts, as well as special seminars to address issues such as parenting, cooking, financial planning, etc. There is literally no end to the needs. It is exciting to see churches and associations across Mississippi making a huge difference in multi-housing communities. Through the Mississippi Baptists Compassionate Ministry Plan, a multi-housing learning community is in place where churches engaging in multi-housing ministry are meeting to learn good practices of this critical ministry. Pray for a time of transition in the leadership area of Deaf Ministry. Jim Booth will be transitioning out of his leadership role and Vickie Stuart will be assuming the leadership position. This will take place between 2018 and Can you identify the deaf in your community? Would you be willing to begin a deaf ministry or help connect the deaf in your community to a nearby ministry? What bridges can you build now to close the gap of reaching the deaf? Where are the multi-housing communities in your city? What are the names and types of communities? Talk about your view of multi-housing communities. List your views and designated as to either being a positive or negative view.
Week Three I grew up in a Christian home and I can hardly remember a time before knowing God s love for me. I was always a good kid, but not really leadership material. One Wednesday during college, at Mississippi State BSU s Noonday, a student spoke and shared about his summer missions experience. While he spoke, I felt as if he was talking directly to me, telling me, You need to do this. Is this the call? Immediately, I knew I wanted to serve as a summer missionary, but I m not smart enough. I m definitely not holy enough, there are much better Christians than me, who would do a much better job. I am not equipped. I am not a leader. Besides, interviews were that day, so it was probably too late anyway. Despite all of my excuses to forget about it, a friend dragged me over to the Student Missions Chair and pulled him aside to talk with me. For a large part of the afternoon, he sat with me, patiently answering questions, encouraging me through my doubts, praying for me, and he even skipped classes to do it. He was quick to assure me that, no, I was not equipped, but the Spirit who lives in me is more than qualified. When I think of Baptist Student Union and what it is, I think of that day, because, to me, it is a perfect example of what BSU really is. That day my eyes were opened to see a group of people who were truly passionate about serving God. Their desire to help me grow in my faith didn t start that day and it certainly didn t end after I d signed up to serve. Over all four years of college, they poured into me and taught me how to pour into others so that when the time came I wouldn t just leave with a degree, but a desire to serve God wherever he sent me next. There are Baptist Student Unions on over twenty campuses in Mississippi, with thirty directors and staff and even more volunteers and student leaders. That s a vast number of people affecting change and shining a light for Christ on college campuses all over our state. BSU is a ministry full of people who passionately love God and choose to serve him right where they are, not only telling students about Jesus, but creating ministry leaders and disciple makers. They take students like me, and students very different than me and pour into our lives so that when we leave college we won t only be ready to enter the workforce, we ll be prepared to be a force for Christ wherever he sends us. BSU is a light to students who will then go out as lights to the world. Identify the varying facets of BSU ministry on Mississippi college and university campuses: - Noonday meals and worship - Student Summer Missions - Discipleship - Campus evangelism Discuss your experiences with BSU ministry, either as a student or as a volunteer on campus. Pray for the more than 20 campuses in Mississippi that are home to active BSUs. Pray for the thirty directors and staff that serve at those BSU centers. Would you consider a connection with a BSU in your area? - Invite a BSU Director to speak to your church. - Provide a noonday meal. - Adopt a student summer missionary. - Make a special donation to the ministry of the BSU. - Host a ministry team from your local BSU. - Encourage your students to connect with BSU on their campuses.
