The Messenger August 2016 Cumberland Plateau Bapti st Association The Cumberland Plateau Baptist Association is a network of Churches committed to evangelizing, teaching and ministering to our World. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. II Timothy 2:15 As your Director of Missions I am often asked, How is the association relevant to our church and what does the association do for our church? In fact, this very question was asked of me this past Sunday while I was visiting one of our churches. One of the ways to answer this question is that the association keeps our churches informed about the many training opportunities that exist to help with various ministries of your church. Here are a few examples of upcoming training opportunities that our churches should take advantage of by attending. These training opportunities cover the topics of discipleship, evangelism, church revitalization, and Sunday School. Central Baptist church is inviting our churches to a two day men s and women s disciple-making conference. Central Baptist is hosting this conference on Friday, August 26 th from 6 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 27 th from 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided on Saturday at noon. Free childcare is available. For more information contact Kevin Hembree at or Kyle McShan at Evangelism training is taking place in the Nashville area where one can learn from top evangelistic pastors how to cast vision for evangelism, create culture, and inspire members to share their faith locally. Speakers include: Ronnie Floyd, Jimmy Scroggins, Tim Dowdy, and John Meador. Cost is just $29 and you will walk away with clear and practical steps that you can implement in your church now. This conference is at Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, TN on August Rekindle: Fanning The Flames of Christian Leadership is a church revitalization workshop. Keynote Speakers are John Mark Clifton and Tom Cheyney. Wallace Memorial Baptist Church in Knoxville is hosting this conference on September 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is only $10. Continued on page 2.

Page 2 The Messenger If you re unable to make these events here is a training event that every one of our churches should attend. Our association along with Central Baptist Church is hosting this year s Sunday School Training Conference. Making Connections will have training for pastors, Sunday School directors, Adult, Youth, Children, and Pre-school leaders and teachers. We usually have to travel to Cookeville or Knoxville for this training event. However, this year the event is right here in our backyard! Make plans to attend and bring your leaders and teachers with you on September 15 th at Central Baptist Church from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No registration required, so we ll see your there. If you have any questions or need more information about any of these events feel free to call me at the CPBA office. Kirk Pastoral Counseling Center of the Cumberland Plateau Cumberland Plateau Baptist Association Submitted By: Carolyn Scott, Pastoral Counselor August is a month of new beginnings. Children return to school and begin new grade levels and meet new students and teachers; college students leave home and begin their journey into academic excellence meeting new people from all parts of the world. Parents are in a new territory of having to trust their child to strangers. And for some parents whose children are going to college, they face one of life s toughest challenges, empty nest syndrome. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that changes are inevitable. And even though we may have a strong relationship with God, fear may at times overtake our thinking and cause us to feel out of control. It is important to remember, that thou seasons change, God never changes! God is still the same today as He has always been and will ever be. God s Word never promises we will not face fear, but it does tell us that when we do face fear, to remember that God is for us and will deliver us out of all our fears. We do have powerful weapons to fight our fears and situations that are beyond our control. God wants us to pray and fast. Remember that prayer and fasting can bring changes into a situation quicker than anything we could orchestrate to change a situation.

Pastoral Counseling continued... Fasting is not simply a way to get what we want, but fasting: Brings dynamic results Helps us to become more like Christ Allows us to make a special request or achieve a specific goal Affords us the opportunity to express and experience more praise, worship, and honor to God Helps us to better prepare ourselves for serving God Helps us to more fully open our hearts to the hungry Helps us to intercede on behalf of the sins and weaknesses of others Helps us to develop self-discipline and show our commitment to God Fasting and prayer transforms our thinking and helps us to be more obedient into carrying out God s perfect plan for our lives. God s ways are perfect. God tells us that fasting is to accomplish: (reference Isaiah 58:5-14) The loosening of the bands of wickedness, The undoing of heavy burdens, and Setting the oppressed free, and to Break every yoke To be moved with compassion for those who are hungry and have little And as we fast: Our light will break forth as the morning Our health shall spring forth speedily Our righteousness shall go before thee and The glory of the LORD shall be thy reward. Scripture in Isaiah tells us that: We shall call upon the Lord and He will answer We shall cry and He will answer, Here I am. The LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones Thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. God will build up the old waste places of our lives God will raise up the foundations of many generations And thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father For the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. Remember, you are not alone. If you need support or prayer, call today. Carolyn Scott is accepting new clients for the fall If you would like to make a counseling appointment, call Carolyn at and make an appointment. A sliding pay scale is suggested, but no one is ever turned away for their inability to pay.

BABY COMFORT STATION See you at the Baby Comfort Station YOLANDA HEUSER MISSION EMPHASIS MEETING: Our Summer Mission Emphasis meeting was July 7 th - First Baptist Church-Crossville hosted the meeting. We had 52 in attendance, 7 churches represented, gave away 3 door prizes and the church with the highest attendance was Calvary. Our guest speaker was Carrie Johnson and she enlightened us on the difficulties that face our teachers and students in the Cumberland County School System. She also gave us great advice on how we, the WMU both the associational level as well as a church level can impact the students and staff in our schools. Some of the ideas presented were to pray for safety for both the teachers and students, adopt a school by becoming a classroom volunteer, packing food on Friday s for the children that will not have food to eat for the weekend, get involved in the Christian organization in the school; these are just a few ideas, there are so many ways to be Jesus hands, feet and voice in the Cumberland County school system, pray about the ways God can use you and your church WMU. We had a brief question and answer time following her talk. We also had a good response for the sign up to help with the Baby Comfort Station; we still have slots that need to be filled. If you want to fill one of these time slots, please call or text me, ( ). Our meeting concluded with a wonderful meal of Bar-B-Que and the fixings with an array of delicious desserts. Our mission project was collecting school supplies, totals are: -4construction paper, 35 scissors, 85 spiral bound note books, 3 composition books, 6 pocket folders, 4 note books, 48 packs of paper, 82 glue sticks, 8 bottles of glue, 808 pencils, 24 mechanical pencils, 25 highlighters, 20 large erasers, 2 packs of sticky notes, 1 pack of rubber bands, 3 packs colored pencils, 79 ink pens, 13 packs of colored markers, 24 boxes of crayons, 4 packs of erasers, 1 ruler, 12 pencil sharpeners, 4 cups of play dough, 3 sheets of window clings, 1 bag of miscellaneous pens & pencils- Under New Business were the unfortunate but necessary changes to the Quarterly Mission Emphasis Meetings. Due to the many cancellations of the January meetings due to inclement weather, we as the CPBA WMU felt it necessary to do away with our January meetings. In doing this it left a 5 month span between the fall and spring emphasis meeting. In order to close the gap we again felt it was necessary to move the months in which we would hold our meetings. Our NEW MEETINGS WILL BE; MARCH, JULY, NOVEMBER. While change is hard, it is sometimes a necessary thing and in the end will make the situation have a better outcome, to which this change is one of those times. This change will take place with our Fall meeting in Please note, the Fall Mission Emphasis meeting will be NOVEMBER 1Oth, 2016 at Fredonia Baptist Church NOT October as was previously planned. We changed this so there would not be a five month span between our meetings. PRAYER WALK MISSION OPPORTUNITY: We have been ask to join in a multi-associational prayer walk for the students returning the UT! This will be August 6 9:00 AM, central time. We will be working with the BCM. This event will be a blessing and a life changer for some of the students attending the University of Tennessee. If enough sign up will take a van or bus if needed. This will be a good time of prayer and fellowship. Register on line at: UTBaptist.org/prayer-walk.html Missions Emphasis Meetings 2017: We need two churches to host our Mission Emphasis Meeting for 2017: March 9 th & November 9 th. Our July 13th meeting will Lantana Road Baptist Church; we will have a Pig Roast. All meetings are 60/65-EAT meetings. and last no longer than 60/65 minutes then we EAT! Mission s education, mission projects, fellowship and a meal, what more could you want? MEN, WOMEN, & CHILDREN, are welcome, join us for a fun and exciting time in missions!

Page 6 The Messenger A workshop to foster revitalization in TBC churches. This workshop is open for Directors of Missions, Pastors, and church leadership seeking help and seeking to be a part of the solution. There will be a track for Directors of Missions, as well as a track for Pastors and Church Leadership. Keynote Speakers: Tom Cheyney & John Mark Clifton Cost: $10 Additional details to come! If you are interested in riding together as a group please let Kirk know by August 18, Prayer partners are needed for the counseling ministry. Please contact Carolyn Scott at Couple Sought for Single Cottage Relief House Parent Position Tennessee Baptist Children s Homes I am reaching out to some people that are a little closer to Oakdale than I am. I am need in a couple that lives close by who can live in the cottage for 1 week and take care of the girls there, and then they would be off for two weeks. Since it is somewhat part-time in hours (compared to regular house parents that work 2 weeks on and 1 week off), this will take a special couple. It can be tough, and it takes a special couple who is willing to learn. Maybe the husband still works a regular job that would allow him to be in the cottage in the evenings and weekends when they are on duty. Maybe a retired couple that is capable of taking care of 8-10 girls at a time. If the couple lives further out from Oakdale, it would make it difficult if the couple has a child of their own. Because they would live on campus for a week and then off two, their own child may not be able to get to school unless they are local (or homeschool). If you have anyone that you can forward this to or direct my way, please do. If you have any questions, please let me know! Thank you for your help.
