Since 2013, thousands of ELCA congregation have participated in this opportunity and dedicated one day to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all people. 1 Trinity Lutheran Church has participated yearly in God s Work, Our Hands Sunday since its beginning in We have worked in the TLC community garden planting the spring and harvesting food for the Palmer Food Bank and the village of Eklutna in the fall. We have bagged laundry soap for the Palmer Food Bank to distribute. We have packed emergency food bags to give out to people standing on street corners or walking the parking lots asking for food. We have recycled at the State Fair. We have collected toilet paper. We have cleaned up trash from the sides of the Palmer Wasilla Hwy. We have packed thank you baskets for emergency responders in our community. We have made crosses to give away. There are probably other things to add to the list but that is a good summary for now. You, who make up Trinity s congregation, have always been generous with your time, energy and money to help our community. Already people have been wearing their yellow tee shirts and recycling at the State Fair. This year September 10 is God s Work, Our Hands Sunday. Please wear your yellow God s Work, Our Hands tee shirt if you have one. There will be a few new ones available on Sunday morning. On Sunday, following worship, those who are able to do so are invited to don their grubbies and their gloves and come to the garden to help harvest the vegetables in the garden. Depending on the weather we may also begin putting the garden to bed for the winter. There is no specific inside project for this year. So those who are not working in the garden are invited to use their personal interests and creativity to find ways to serve their neighbor. We hope you will report to the congregation on the ways you chose to serve in the community. Some suggestions were offered in worship last Sunday morning. One might give blood to save other lives, knit or crochet baby hats for the hospital, knit or crochet a wrap for a cancer patient, sew a simple quilt for a person experiencing health problem, make a palm cross to give away, prepare a meal to give away or to share with a lonely person, write a letter or make cards, make meals for Family Promise for the nights no one else is available to do so. There are many other ways to serve your neighbor in Jesus name. If you come up with a good idea that excites you, share it and see if you can gather a few others to work with you. Janet Jacob has asked for a few people to help paint the floor at the Palmer Food Bank, a project that will be spread over three days. Please contact Janet at if you are able to help with that project. God s Work, Our Hands. We worship God in many ways. On this Sunday we include in our worship using our hands in service. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see everything has become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 1 God s Work, Our Hands 2017 Toolkit Peace, Pastor Diane 2

3 MY PSALM OF THANKSGIVING God- You turned a very shy young woman into a lawyer and a judge. You helped my poor family get me through school. You have helped me with impossible cases. You helped me when my husband was violent. You used my life to help other victims of domestic violence. You gave me 6 beautiful kids to raise and help raise (step kids). Finally, you put my son to work at the white house and gave my daughter a beautiful singing voice. You watch over all my children. God is awesome! -Deborah Burlinski Praise the Lord, for he is with us in our humanity and in our bigger yearning for something stronger and wiser and kind. I was confused; I didn t know the right thing to do. You surrounded me with friends who know you and who don t abandon me when I need kind eyes and wise words. I praise you Lord for showing me how I can praise you in the assembly and belong. Anonymous Thank you God for always being in my life. You were even with me in the hospital. Lloyd St. Palmer, AK GETTING TO KNOW HAZEL DAVIDSON I would like to begin by sharing how excited the children and I are to become part of the Trinity Lutheran Church community over the next few months. I know that I have visited several times before, but being part of your church family is special. I wanted to take the time to share a little about our family. I am originally from Costa Rica and immigrated to this country at the age of three. I grew up in Los Angeles, California. Church was not part of my life growing up. I started coming to church at the age of twenty and decided I wanted to do overseas missions. I served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) for five years and met my late husband there. We moved to Alaska in I have three amazing children. Lucía (13), Ava (11), and Ezra (8). We love art, painting, doing pottery, being outside 3

4 enjoying the Alaskan woods, and watching Dr. Who! We look forward to spending time with you all and learning about your interests. Hazel SEPTEMBER BIBLE READING PLAN God s creation includes creatures with fins, feathers, and fur. Read how animals play a major part in these Bible stories! Wearesparkhouse.org. Creation Genesis 1:1-2:4a Noah and the Ark Gensis 6-9 Daniel and the Lions Daniel 6 Jonah and the Big Fish Jonah 1:2 Ask: God created animals of all shapes, sizes, and sounds. If you could create a new animal, what would it look like? What would it eat? What sounds would it make? What would you name it? What do you think Noah s neighbors thought when they saw him building a giant boat? (What would your neighbors think?) Daniel and Jonah both felt afraid. God saw and heard them and helped them. When have you been afraid? How has God seen and heard and helped you? Do: God created every animal on the planet-the octopus, the platypus, and even the bumble bee! Go outside with your family and count how many animals you can see, hear, and smell. Thank God for each and every one. Pray: Dear God, thank you for creating us all, loving us all, and protecting us all. We are especially thankful for these animals. (Name significant animals to your family, like pets, familiar animals, favorite wild animals, and common neighborhood critters.) And all God s creatures said Amen! Next time: Do you like superheroes? Next month s plan includes stories about some amazing people doing amazing things. Jan Walton TOILET PAPER Hi Everyone! On Sunday at the God's Work Our Hands indoor activities we will be collecting packages of toilet paper to donate to the Palmer food shelf. If you can donate toilet paper, please bring it to church before, or on, Sunday. Thank you!!! Lynn Anselm 4

5 CLINCH PICNIC PHOTO INSIGHT SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTS SEPTEMBER 17 This fall s intergenerational Sunday school class will examine the life of David in all its charismatic, quirky Old Testament glory. (Have you ever noticed how often God s most favorite people have to literally run for their lives? It s a thing!) Every week, we ll examine an episode in David s life -- like How David Made Saul Look Like a Sissy or How to Criticize a King Without Losing Your Head. Classes will be based on Old Testament Professor Walter Brueggemann s book David s Truth and facilitated by Dena Luchsinger. Come and consider the public, private, and theological truths of Israel s most Davidic King. We ll meet in the Trinity Room at 9 a.m. Dena LOM ACTION REPORT On Monday night, August 12, 2017, Trinity Lutheran s LOM held its first action with representatives from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation and members of the community. The LOM had researched the housing situation in the Mat-Su Valley for over a year. Members of the LOM decided to address the issue of the waitlist in the Valley. Both individuals and people working in nonprofit housing organizations had all talked with us about how long the wait list was and how discouraging it was to be told that no financial help for low income, affordable housing would be available for two to four years. That is the average length of time an individual or family is on the waitlist with AHFC. The Members of Trinity s LOM first met with the person supervising of the AHFC office in Wasilla but he kept referring us to the head office in Anchorage. So we scheduled a research visit with the office in Anchorage. At that meeting we asked about the waitlist and its length. At that time we were told about the switch that the Anchorage office had made to a lottery several years before. We were told the lottery system brought clarity to the people 5

6 looking for help because they knew where they were in the system. The lottery got people into housing faster and it streamlined the administration process for AHFC. Later at a LOM meeting at Trinity we asked ourselves why the lottery system was not being used in the Valley if it was so much better for everyone involved. We decided that it was unjust for one system to be used in one city and not in any other part of the state which had similar needs. That was the issue we decided to address at our action. LOM members talked to Trinity members and invited them to attend. LOM members contacted the local nonprofit housing organizations and asked them to attend. The public was invited through newspaper articles and other advertising. You can watch the YouTube recording of the entire evening if you were unable to attend at VIA Trinity Housing Action. Everyone who attended the action and later talked with Kelly, our organizer, or with me said they thought the action went well. We think the people from Alaska Housing Finance Corporation were surprised by the event. We don't think they had anticipated that they would not be in charge. That being said, they said no to both our requests but they did say they would review the situation and consider changes. Most people said they felt it was a very positive meeting overall and they looked forward to seeing what would happen next! After the meeting two of the AHFC representatives asked two of us, "Where did you get this idea that a lottery system would be better that the wait list for the Valley" (that was our first pinning question- would they make the change). Both of us from Trinity were able to honestly answer, "From your office. You told us it was a better way of serving the people; that the lottery brought clarity to the people waiting for housing, the lottery got people into housing faster and it was easier for you to administer!" Why wouldn't we want it out in the Valley where the wait list is up to four years long for assistance with affordable housing? One of the principles of Organizing is that the action in sometimes in the reaction. So now we are hoping that the action is in the reaction, that our asking the question may bring change and equity to the Valley. We had a fairly good turnout, about 75 people. We would have liked to have had more testimony from the general public but what we had was enough. The people who spoke shared their stories well and honestly. One piece of feedback that we had from a person in our congregation was that it made her think of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Sessions. She said she was glad people had a chance to share their pain and be heard. That public sharing of pain, in and of itself, made the event a success. For all of us participating in and leading the action, it was a new and uncomfortable way of following Jesus. We tend to be very good with charity that is, in helping an individual. Working for justice and speaking to power is much more difficult. We are especially proud of several of our LOM members. When one looks Phyllis G. and Lynn A. one generally finds them in the kitchen cooking or cleaning- that that is where they feel most comfortable. They self-identify as hospitality people. Phyllis was one of our pinners. She had not wanted the position. She wanted to serve cookies but we only have eight people in the LOM and there was no one else to fill the spot. She said she would do it. She asked her question, stopped the target from rambling, asked the question again and then when the answer was no, asked a good follow up question all in a gentle manner. Lynn is another behind the scenes person yet she stood up, spoke in front of all of us at the microphone and gave her testimony clearly and truthfully. New leaders are emerging in our congregation who can and will speak for themselves and for others. The executive director of the Alaska Housing Finance Corp said to us in our research meeting that she had never heard from the public on this topic. Now she has. Even if nothing else comes of the action that makes the evening a success. We do not know yet where this journey will lead. On page 317 in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship book you will find the following prayer. I think it is an appropriate prayer for Trinity s Local Organizing Ministry and the journey we have begun. God you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love is supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Peace, Pastor Diane 6

7 THE FREEDOM OF GIVING MONEY Pastor Marcia Wakeland As we continue our series on spiritual practices, one that carries some considerable baggage is The Freedom to Give Away Money. Perhaps it is or always has been easy for you, but it can also be that sticky place in our spiritual practice; money touches matters of security, success and status, big things we cling to as humans. That s why Jesus talked and taught so much about it. It was clear money could be the treasure of our lives, instead of loving God. But I think Jesus also talked so much about it because he knew it was a way of freedom. If you can give away money with gratitude, there is an interior freedom that is wide and vast and surprising. But it takes some trust and regular practice to keep it so. I remember when giving away money was so easy. I was child, holding my dime to put into the offering plate at church. I couldn t wait for the plate to get to me to add my money to the bills and envelopes already there, and watch it as it was passed along, everyone adding to it. Then to watch it carried up to the pastor and put on the altar seemed like I was part of something good and great by my offering. And I was. Then I became wise to the world, and doubts crept in when I was asked to give money away: Would they use my hard-earned money well or squander it? Could I really spare it? And I really wanted that new. There never seemed to be enough. And the ease of giving away money became laden with guilt as well. I should tithe. I should help the poor. I have so much more. But I lost that initial joy of giving. Until a building campaign at church when my husband and I were stretched to give beyond our means and miraculously, abundance happened! And we experienced what it means that is better to give than to receive. Jim Fredrickson of Seward Lutheran Church has a similar story about giving away money: I have been a Lutheran all my life, I was raised to give an offering every Sunday and have done so out of habit during the times in my life that I have been a regular church-going Christian. However, it was always just a pittance, not even close to a tithe. It wasn't until later in life when I once again began attending church on a regular basis that I learned the value of tithing and giving in general. After having lived in the bush (King Cove, AK) for nine years, my family and I moved to Soldotna and attended Christ Lutheran. I became involved in a Wednesday morning men's breakfast there and we read a book entitled "God's Miraculous Plan of Economy" by a Baptist preacher whose name I don't recall. It was a real awakening for me. He talked about how God has promised over and over in the Bible that we will be rewarded here on earth for practicing good stewardship. He related many stories of how that has been proven, such as in John D. Rockefeller's life in which he didn't learn to give until on his death bed and how it changed his life for the better. Anyhow, I decided to try it, and voila! It has really improved my life ever since. Stewardship is a way of life. It's a routine that one gets into, just like brushing one's teeth everyday. And, just as tooth-brushing leads to good dental health, stewardship leads to good spiritual health -and a happy and prosperous life. It's a testament to one's faith in God. Investors practice a leap of faith in various investment brokers that their investments will pay off in big dividends. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. My main investment broker is God. So, I ask people - "Do you really think that God will let you suffer financially or otherwise because you gave money (or your time and talents) to His Church?" What kind of a loving God would do that? Rather, I have found over and over that giving to God's kingdom (Church, the poor, various charities, etc.) has resulted in big dividends for me and my family. It has made me, as I have told others, one of the "richest men in the world." It's important that people realize what the word "rich" means. It's not just money, it's happiness. Being free to give away money is an important spiritual practice: a woman named Louise began this practice by simply changing her attitude. I decided to love paying bills, she said. I decided to be grateful that I had enough to pay them and that the creditor trusted me enough to follow through. It was time to stop worrying about money, realize it s all God s anyway and trust abundance instead of being a tightwad. How free are you to give away your money? With gratitude? When and how is it most difficult for you? If you saw it as a spiritual practice, a way of reforming your faith, would that make a difference? 7

HAM enables community leaders, businesses and families join in the fight against hunger by raising awareness of the food crises locally and nationally. We want to remind each of you of the important role you play in ending hunger in Alaska. Each time you bring in a can of food to the pantry it eases the burden of someone in our community. When you combine your donations with others' we are able to make a substantial contribution to ending hunger. We help you will get involved. The Common Chest Martin Luther was instrumental in establishing the Wittenberg Order of January This order became known as the "Common Chest" because a chest for the weekly collection and disbursement of funds was built with three separate locks and keys. Four stewards were elected on the basis of their knowledge of the town and the citizen's needs. The only criterion for distribution of loans or outright gifts was to be the need of the recipient. To make a long story short this idea spread through Germany and Scandinavia and is still alive in the world today. This idea was brought to North America and was named the Community Chest. Today the Community Chest is known as the United Way. The United Way drive is kicked off in Anchorage on August 31st and I encourage you to prayerfully consider making a donation to the campaign in your place of work. The United Way campaign supports LSSA's mission and thanks to you it works in our community. Please consider a giving an hours of your pay per month to the United Way through your workplace campaign. It helps many non-profits in our community especially this year where the need is so great. Good News We got our van back and the only damage was some spray painting on the sliding door. We also completed the installation of our security system so we pray that our van will never be stolen again. Save the Dates: September 15th Harvest of Hope Auction, Sheraton Anchorage 6pm October 8th - Beer and Hymns - O'Brady's at 6pm October 14th - Mayor's Charity Ball - LSSA is a recipient this year. 9
