FROM REVEREND DIANE Dearly Beloved, It is amazing to realize that we have past the midpoint of 2018 already. I again want to thank everyone at Trinity Lutheran church for all you have done already this year for Jesus sake. Our mission statement for the congregation is as follows: to invite all to know and grow in Christ. Everything we do revolves around helping each other and others to know Jesus and to live as people who have chosen to follow in Jesus footsteps. While I was away on sabbatical in the beginning of the year, the people whom you elected to the church council met for a one day retreat with Rev. Lisa Smith Fiegel. The purpose was twofold; to build a working relationship amongst the council members and to establish mission goals for After much prayer and discussion Rev. Lisa and the council established three mission goals. * Garden upgrades * Inviting others to worship (and fellowship) * Financial stability * Garden upgrades This year Trinity s TLC community Garden received a Domestic Hunger grant from the ELCA and its partners for the amount of $2,500. The money has been spent on a new water tank to provide additional water to the garden. It is not yet functional as we need to either build or buy a cradle for it in order to get it up, off the ground. Basics tools, ground cloth, containers, a wagon, soil for starting plants and seeds were also purchased. This year we also hired a couple of young men from Alaska adult and Teen Challenge to do the tilling. Students and families from Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School started seeds and have helped plant and weed in the garden. People driving by have bought compost tea, offered plants and lent a hand. The weather hasn t cooperated much yet this year but we remain hopeful that there will be a plentiful harvest. People gather every Wednesday for Weed and Feed. It is a time when many hands really do make the work lighter and good food makes everyone happy! * Inviting others to worship (and fellowship) There have been new faces in worship over the past few months. Several of the new people have commented to me on how welcome they have felt. Well done everyone! When we do have a newcomer it is generally because they are visiting in the area and attend an ELCA church somewhere else. It is unusual for a person to simply drift in off the street. Often people come to a church for the first time because they have been invited and accompanied by a person who already attends there. Sometime a Sunday worship service is just too scary. The outreach committee has worked hard this year to create fun events that happen on other days, outside of the sanctuary, to which we can invite friends, neighbors and family members. Be brave. Be hospitable. Be welcoming. Be inviting. Tell your stories of how Jesus has touched your life. Then as you share a meal, stand in line together, play at the park or fish at the stream, invite them to come to sing and pray and worship God with you at Trinity Lutheran. There is always good food to share during fellowship time too! * Financial stability This is a big one. We say we do ministry through our building. That means we have to take care of it. We have tenants, as most of you know, and the income from the tenants covers not only the insurance, heating, electrical and many other expenses for the parts of the building the tenants occupy but also for the part of the building we occupy as a congregation. Our other expenses payroll, office equipment and supplies, fellowship and worship, outreach and ministry are paid with our tithes and offerings. In the beginning of each year we set a bare bones budget, and quite literally, we hope and pray that we can meet all our financial obligations. All the snow in March was costly. Also, as many of you know from our special congregational meeting, there are issues with the water system that we are struggling to take care of as well as needed upgrades to bathrooms. Even ministering through a building we already have can be costly. Thank you to all of you who give financially to Trinity weekly, monthly, and yearly. I trust you are all aware that there are several alternate ways to give that are available to us all. If you are a Thrivent Financial Services member you may have Choice Dollars you can give to Trinity Lutheran Church. If you do not know how to do this please contact Pastor Diane and she will direct you to someone who can help you. We also can obtain Action Grants from Thrivent for specific events and activities. They are small 2
3 grants but they add up and make a difference. You can also name Trinity Lutheran as your recipient for Fred Meyers community rewards. Amazon Smile will allow you list Trinity as the organization you want to benefit every time you make a purchase. Another possibility to consider is that as you work on your estate planning you may want to include Trinity in your charitable provisions. If you think of other creative ways to work toward financial stability for Trinity, please share them with the council and each other. Running a house and caring for a family requires careful planning and prudent use of the funds available. Running a church, caring for God s family and doing the ministry Jesus calls us to, requires the same. As we continue to work together towards financial stability, I again thank each of you for all the ways each participate in the ongoing work at Trinity and for your generous contributions of time, ability and money. We have the rest of the year to continue working on these mission goals. Lead us and guide us, Lord Jesus. Peace, Pastor Diane ANOTHER YEAR OLDER Happy birthday and happy anniversary to the following TLC attendees! Mary Krauszer Jennie Barge Debbie Burlinski Pat Younack Lewis O Brien WAYS TO DONATE Trinity is enrolled in Fred Meyer's Community Rewards Program. You can link your Rewards Card to donate to Trinity at And remember that you can also donate through using the Amazon Smile program. To sign up, just go to SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING REPORT As a Congregation we met on July 1, 2018 to discuss and vote on the acquisition of a Loan to resolve a water issue and address the replacement of toilets. The Water issue was caused by a failure of the delivery of water to person contracted to purchase water from our community well. The toilet issue addresses a failed toilet and upgrade the remaining toilets to accessible heights. This first effort did not result in a vote and the meeting was continued to July 8, 2018 to allow time for pricing toilets. During this week persons in the congregation came forward with a commitment to purchase the toilets need for these upgrades. The remaining issue was the resolution of the water issue the cost of which is $9,200 dollars. A person attending church has come forward with an offer to finance a personal loan for the $9,200. We have drawn up a loan agreement and with finalize that loan this week. Toilet installation will begin this week as well. There was a documented quorum for each gathering and minutes of this meeting will be included in our next Church Council meeting. Richard Clinch, President TLC Church Council 3

It s been quite some time since I ve addressed the congregation in the newsletter. There are several things I d like to update with you folks. First, as many of you know, when we first moved, it was our intent to maintain residence in both Alaska and Texas. For a variety of reasons it hasn t worked out that way, so after 47 years in Alaska for me, we re now making our home in Waco, a city that is central to our family members who reside in several places from Dallas to Corpus Christi. We think of you and pray for you often. We miss you folks, our family there, and Alaska in general. But having found a wonderful Church home and many music Venues to take part in, Waco has become home. Pastor Raphel & Fatuma remain a great connection for us. We are so thankful to God for the timely funds you folks shared with them. It was as if God told you of Fatuma s issues with her legs. She was able to travel with her brother to Nairobi For treatment while Raphael stayed home to take care of Church and family matters. Fatuma saw a bone specialist there and received some strong medication in treatment. She returned home Saturday night, June 23. She will need to return to Nairobi in two months for followup appointments and will likely see another specialist. I m thankful that Raphael and I are able to communicate frequently via Facebook Messenger. I d like to share just one brief segment from Father s Day, starting with a response from Raphael: Sure we are. You are more than a friend. In fact we see you like our biological father. 4
5 You have a special place in our hearts. Thanks. HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO YOU. TOO. LOVE YOU DADDY. GOD WATCH OVER YOU. I do think of you like a son, Raphael... I'm so glad for our friendship. God Bless You... Hank Be BLESSED DADDY.PRAYING FOR YOU TO LIVE LONG Note Raphael on his motorcycle in the picture. This is a reminder of several years ago when Trinity purchased this bike for use in his ministry for Christ.
