2 Beloved, As I look back over America s powerful past, one of the things I notice is irony. Irony, as defined by the Oxford dictionary is, something happening in the opposite way to what is expected, and typically causing wry amusement. I see irony in America s past, present and apparent future. The only thing is, as we stand at yet another crossroads in our country there is nothing amusing about it. Bearing in mind part of that definition, it is ironic that as we bid farewell to the presidency of Barack Obama, whose election many heralded as the ultimate symbol of a unified post-racial America, we are again marching on Washington for civil, human, economic, voting and equal rights. This weekend was originally hoped to stand as a point in time of remembering the great work of Dr. Martin Luther King and all of our civil rights leaders. It is a weekend that would empower us by letting us see how much we have changed after having made choices at the various crossroads in our democracy. Sometimes, however, it seems like the old saying rings true: The more things change, the more they remain the same. Be encouraged because within our past victories and failures lies ways on how to affect tomorrow. We just need to remember that it is the Lord who does not change and has bought us thus far. In Jeremiah 6:16, God speaks to the prophet, telling him the actions to take when standing at a crossroads; look at and inquire of the past. While the scripture is being written to a nation, I encourage you to personalize it. Let it speak to you, even today, while we, as a nation, stand at a crossroad. The fact is, that if we as a nation and the church are at crossroads, then, in many ways so are we as individuals. Remember, As a people of God, we rise and fall together. To that end, because of the Power of Remembering what God has done in the Past, we can invoke the words of Maya Angelou and say; And still I (we) rise. With a Shepherd s Love, Pastor Lacey
