2 Beloved, Over the summer, many of us will get to take a much-needed journey during which we may visit our relatives. For the next three weeks, I will be doing just that. In fact, I will visit three relatives that are giants. These three are rejection, relaxation and perception/recognition. I welcome you to our next sermonic series journey: Facing Your Giants. Using the narrative in 1 st Samuel 17:25-51, we will explore the many giants David faces during this encounter, including Goliath. Not all giants are obvious. Some things in life are relative to our point of view, including what we consider a giant. What may be a small and inconsequential condition to one person may be a humungous and intimidating situation to another. One of Merriam Webster s definitions for giant is something to be very large or more powerful than normal. The problematic part of this definition is using the word normal. Normal is relative to what is accepted, and at times frequent, in a community. This truism stands whether it is good or bad. Unfortunately, one of the more frequent giants we have in our lives is rejection. It is rare that we are happy being dismissed or disrespected. Fear not however, because of our relationship with God, we can move from our place of rejection into a state of relaxation that encourages a self-confident proactive action. When you use what God has given you, victory will always be near at hand. Consequently, your actions will cause you to face perceptions of how you are recognized. Remember just because others do not think you will win, does not mean you will not win. The most powerful testimony is in what God has determined. It is my prayer that by the end of this sermonic series journey, we will be a stone s throw away from being prepared to overcome, whatever, wherever and whomever we are facing. Let us face our giants and watch God receive the glory. With a Shepherd s Love, Pastor Lacey

3 THE ORDER OF WORSHIP 7:45 A.M. & 10:45 A.M. ~ Praise & Worship **THE CALL TO WORSHIP Though some people rejected Jesus, you are invited to come to the Lord in trust and hope. Lord, receive and guide us, as we worship. Still, as we serve the Lord, others will reject us. With faith in the Lord, we will move past rejection. Blessed be the name of the Lord. **THE EVOCATION (In Unison) God, rejection can become a giant in our lives. Give use the strength to face it. We know that with your love, mercy and grace, we can overcome it. Thank you for accepting us as we are. In Jesus Name we pray. 4 RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES BENNY JOHNSON ~ LACRISHA MCLAURIN ~ PAMELA PLUMMER ~ MALIEK A. STERRETT SERMON SERIES ~ FACING YOUR GIANTS ~ 1 Samuel 17 The familiar story of David and Goliath offers insight into how we can face big challenges or giants. We may not meet Goliath in person, but we encounter many similar giants in our lives. All believers will often find themselves face to face with giants. This sermon series explores our faith response to three familiar giants: rejection, relaxation, and perception. 7/1 Giants of Rejection 1 Samuel 17: /8 Giants of Relaxation 1 Samuel 17: /15 Giants of Perception 1 Samuel 17:41-51 MORNING SCRIPTURE Mark 5:24-34 (NIV) 24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed. 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my clothes? 31 You see the people crowding against you, his disciples answered, and yet you can ask, Who touched me? 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering. SERMONIC SCRIPTURE I Samuel 17:25-29 (NIV) 25 Now the Israelites had been saying, Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel. 26 David asked the men standing near him, What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, This is what will be done for the man who kills him. 28 When Eliab, David s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle. 29 Now what have I done? said David. Can t I even speak?
