2 Beloved, Are you living a life of denial, discipline, or declaration? At first glance, any one of those three states is individually influential, but when joined together they can be incredibly spiritually empowering. This is magnified when they are converged in the Power of Prayer and Fasting. It can usher into liberating dimensions of the Christ. Though we are not doing a congregation-wide fast, I offer that you consider your own individual fast and how it can empower you. I invite you on a corporate journey. A Journey to Calvary: You are invited to take a Lenten journey to Calvary using your pen. Over the next 6 weeks you will be given prompts in the church bulletin to daily reflect upon your spiritual quest, in experiencing the power of Christ s path to the cross. We will explore what implications that journey has upon your right now. Here are the first daily prompts that begin with this Ash Wednesday*: March 1: Directions = Wilderness - Read: Matthew 3:16 4:11 When you are in a strange place, where do you go for directions? What if that place is the wilderness? Write a few words that describe what that wilderness would look like to you. March 2: Meeting with God - Read: Exodus 3:1-5 Have you ever met God in the wilderness? Write the first three sentences that you think you would ask God at that time. Consider why you asked those three questions. March 3: Detours - Read Samuel 3:1-10 We are not alone when we struggle to hear and understand God s voice, or when we wonder what God wants us to do in our lives. Yet, quite possibly, God s answer to us is simpler than we expect. Let your journaling seeks God s direction to you for this day. March 4: Questions? - Read Mark 14:36 Pour out your questions, big and small, in your writing today; do not be afraid if the questions feel impossible or seem to go unanswered. 4 SERMON SERIES ~ POWER Do you want power now or are you willing to wait until the summer of 2017? Well, if you watch the hit TV series, Power, then you must wait until the summer. However, if you want real life-changing power, continue this Year exploring God s power at work in you. "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us." Ephesians 3:20 MORNING SCRIPTURE MATTHEW 9:14-17 (NIV) 14 Then John s disciples came and asked him, How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? 15 Jesus answered, How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. 16 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved. SERMONIC SCRIPTURE MARK 9:14-29 (NIV) 14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 What are you arguing with them about? he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not. SERMONIC SCRIPTURE CONTINUED 19 You unbelieving generation, Jesus replied, how long shall I stay with You? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me. 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy s father, How long has he been like this? From childhood, he answered. 22 It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us. 23 If you can? said Jesus. Everything is possible for one who believes. 24 Immediately the boy s father exclaimed, I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. You deaf and mute spirit, he said, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again. 26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, He s dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. 28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, Why couldn t we drive it out? 29 He replied, This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting.

5 SERMON NOTES LITTLE KNOWN Black History FACTS THE FIRST LICENSED AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE PILOT WAS NAMED BESSIE COLEMAN. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892, Bessie Coleman grew up in a world of harsh poverty, discrimination and segregation. She moved to Chicago at 23 to seek her fortune, but found little opportunity there as well. Wild tales of flying exploits from returning WWI soldiers first inspired her to explore aviation, but she faced a double stigma in that dream being both African American and a woman. She set her sights on France in order to reach her dreams and began studying French. In 1920, Coleman crossed the ocean with all of her savings and the financial support of Robert Abbott, one of the first African American millionaires. Over the next seven months, she learned to fly and in June of 1921, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale awarded her an International Pilot's License. Wildly celebrated upon her return to the United States, reporters turned out in droves to greet her. Coleman performed at numerous air shows over the next five years, performing heart thrilling stunts, encouraging other African Americans to pursue flying, and refusing to perform where Blacks were not admitted. When she tragically died in a plane accident in 1926, famous writer and equal rights advocate Ida B. Wells presided over her funeral. An editorial in the "Dallas Express" stated, "There is reason to believe that the general public did not completely sense the size of her contribution to the achievements of the race as such."
