2 Beloved, Hearing that a new record has been set is sometimes a cause for celebration. Unfortunately, recently it has been a cause for heartbreak. In the early hours of Monday morning, it was announced that a new record had been set in America s history of gun violence. The senseless mass killing of 58 people in Las Vegas by a gunman has now topped the death toll of all previous modern day killing sprees. So again, as a nation we mourn. Sadly, coping with tragedies is becoming way too normalized in our day to day lives. When dealing with mass tragedy, whether it is Las Vegas, Orlando, Puerto Rico or New Orleans, attempts at comparisons, does us all a total disservice. Yet we must mourn and honor the lives lost, while celebrating the actions of those that responded in helping and saving others. Galatians 6:9 encourages us to not become weary in doing good. I pray that we do not grow so weary or numb that hearing of such tragedies is breaking news that has no personal resonance. For those feeling overwhelmed, I encourage you to rely on God s love and your greater commitments to and through Christ. Let Jesus will be your strength in all times. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. 6 Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided. 7 When the LORD takes pleasure in anyone s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them. 8 Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice. 9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
