1 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2018 CALEB: A PROFILE IN COURAGE JOSHUA 14:6-12

2 Beloved, Age ain t nothing but a number ; I am aging like a fine wine ; I am like a well-aged steak a beautiful choice and worth the wait ; Black don t crack ; The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now. How do these sayings tie together? One of Bethany s most treasured assets is her oak trees. Although we do not have oak trees on any of our properties, including 460 Marcus Garvey Boulevard, we do have many of them within our sanctuary, at every service. The oak trees of which I speak are not physical trees they are our seasoned, elderly saints. As a history-making, multi-generational, inclusive, progressive, family-oriented, social justice church, with a deep legacy, their contributions to our past, present and future are undeniable. The most beautiful part is, even at their later aged years, they are rising against the challenge of slowing down. Truth be told, they are profiles in courage because of, and not in spite of, their age! Given the troubling aspects of our current times, it is of great comfort that we have internal monuments to remind us of the battles previously won. It is even more encouraging that they do not sit by passively. They are still actively engaged and are willing to seek out God s promises. In Joshua 14:6-12, we find Joshua actively requesting the fulfillment of God s promise of land for his family. He was not asking solely for 40 acres and a mule; but an actualization of his promised and earned inheritance. I pray we can all be like Joshua and never feel too old to ask for our ageless God to fulfill what has been promised. Always remember, when we say, Yay, and Amen to God s will, we receive blessings forevermore. Lastly, be encouraged when we lose an oak tree. Usually, they have provided enough shade for the other trees so that they are sturdy enough to stand on their own when they are gone. Rest well, my great and mighty oaks. 4 SERMON SERIES Profiles in Courage: Rising Above the Accepted The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1 In a culture where compromise, compliancy and conceit are the norms of the day, God calls believers to be counter-cultural. In a word, God calls us to be courageous. This sermon series explores six profiles of courage from the Bible that implore believers to be brave in the face of opposition. 11/25 A WOMAN MATTHEW 26:6-13 MORNING SCRIPTURE Luke 2:25-38 (NIV) 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss [a] your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. 33 The child s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too. 36 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. SERMONIC SCRIPTURE Joshua 14:6-12 (NIV) 6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, 8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly. 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly. 10 Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.
