1 Trinity Lutheran of Freistadt Church School Child Care October 7, 2018 Welcome Guests! We are glad you are here! Here are a few things we thought you would like to know to help you feel at home with us today: Please accept one of the green bags that you will find on your way out of the front entrance of the sanctuary as our gift to you. Restrooms are located in the large room adjacent to the sanctuary. Our ushers will be glad to point you in the proper direction. Children are always welcome to worship with us and sincerely, that is what we prefer. However, for your convenience, a nursery is available for parents with children 3 years old and younger who might wish to use it. The nursery is staffed during the 9:15 Bible Study Hour & 10:45am service. Parents may use this room during the 8:00am service as well, but the room will not be staffed by volunteers. An usher will be happy to help you find the nursery room. The offering is an opportunity for our members to support the Lord s work at Trinity. As our guest, we ask only that you sign our Friendship Pad as it is passed down the pew. When we celebrate the Lord s Supper, we do so convinced that Jesus gives us His true body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins. Receiving the Lord s Supper here expresses not only fellowship with the Lord, but also agreement with the teachings of this congregation. Therefore communicant members of LC-MS congregations are always welcome to commune with us, and other guests wishing to commune are kindly asked to speak with the pastor before the service. We cherish the opportunity to worship with all followers of Jesus, and we regret the sad divisions within Christianity. Whether you are 1 communing with us today or not, please join us (and Jesus!) in praying for truth and unity within His Church. This facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. We would love to have your family join us for our Fellowship Hour & T3 that takes place Sunday mornings at 9:15am. Ask any of our members or the pastor and we will be happy to help you find your way and get settled in. In Christ, Pastor Carl Lehenbauer

2 COLLEGE CARE PACKAGES College care packages will again be assembled during the last week of October. Your donations of snacks and candy are greatly appreciated. Please look over the list below, and if you are able, drop them off at Trinity no later than Sunday, October 21st. Trinity sends packages to nearly two dozen college students. This will be the first of three mailings this school year. If you would care to make a financial contribution to offset mailing expenses, that is also greatly appreciated. Your contributions will help to make our packages truly special. TRINITY S COLLEGE CARE PACKAGE SUGGESTIONS: Individually wrapped candy/chocolates Soup Powder Packets / Ramen Noodles Chewing Gum/Tic Tacs Microwave Popcorn Crackers & Cheese packs Homemade or store bought cookies or bars Individual Coffee Pods / Tea packs Small bags of chips/pretzels/cheetos Granola Bars/Fruit Bars Poptarts Hand-written notes with a Scripture passage and a sentence or two of encouragement are also very helpful MARRIED COUPLES' RETREAT Join us for our 14th Annual Couples' Retreat Friday-Sunday, November 2-4, 2018 Scandinavian Lodge, Sister Bay, WI Going Back to Sacred Marriage Gary Thomas is perhaps the best author on Christian marriage out there. And when you find the best resource out there to engage and educate Christian spouses on what marriage really is, you use it. For that reason, we are cycling back to a book we ve used in previous retreats Sacred Marriage. Everything about your marriage everything from the history you and your spouse create, to the love you share, to the forgiveness you both offer and seek by turn is filled with the capacity to help you grow in Christ s character. This retreat will equip you to love God more passionately, reflect the nature of His Son more precisely, and fulfill God s overarching purpose for your marriage. Whatever season of marriage you are in, the sessions we explore during this retreat will give you the practical help you need to infuse your marriage with a spiritual passion that will not only change you but will change the world around you. Copies of the book are available here at Trinity in the church office and in the Schedler Resource Center for $ A Kindle download is also available online for $11. Your experience and understanding of each session will be greatly enhanced if you come to the retreat having read the book. There is a Friday evening wine & cheese tasting and continental breakfasts are provided on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Lunches and dinners are on your own. Door County s restaurants are exceptional! While there is no registration fee for the retreat, each couple s other expenses will be the two nights lodging at the Scandinavian ($104-$124 per night, depending on your room choice) and the cost of the book. If you have the book from previous retreats, please bring your copy. Everyone should also bring a Bible. For more information or to register visit: 2

3 Prayer Before Worship Holy Lord, You are worthy of my worship. You deserve a lifetime of my faithful and devoted service, and certainly you are worthy of this hour of undivided attention. Yet I know that apart from Your Spirit, I cannot offer you even that. Fill me with Your Spirit, so that I may worship You in Spirit and in Truth, for Jesus sake. Amen. Old Testament Reading: Genesis 2: The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading: Hebrews 2: 1-13 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet." In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says, "I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again he says, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Gospel Good News: Mark 10: 2-16 (Sermon Text) Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" "What did Moses command you?" he replied. They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away." "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery." People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. If I remember correctly, I paid around $1,800 for this monstrosity, it weighed at least 700 pounds, caused the entire neighborhood lights to dim every time I turned it on, and ran hot enough to heat the entire house all winter. How things have changed. Now, you can buy a 65- inch flat screen TV for under $500. My 14-year-old daughter can carry it up the stairs for you, by herself. It barely uses any energy, and produces no heat. You know what hasn t changed? Chocolate chip cookies. My 94-year-old grandmother recently passed away, but she was a genius when it came to baking. Her homemade chocolate chip cookies were the same back when I was 5 years old, living on 52 nd and Burleigh in Milwaukee, as they were a few years ago. Perfection demands no change. Over the years, we may see changes in our styles of worship, the design of our church buildings, technology like projection, and new music. As we invite new generations of believers to join our midst, some change is inevitable. God s Word, however, is the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow. His Love, and His desire to bring us home with Him, never changes. No one wants a tube television anymore, except for maybe Rick Adams. In some cases, change is wonderful. God s Word is alive today, thousands of years after He breathed it. Perfection demands no change. I think I will go bake up a batch of Grandma s chocolate chip cookies. They are perfect, just the way they are. Manifest Your divine love within their hearts and let Your tranquility be evident in their lives. We ask that You take away the thoughts of hatred, malice and pride they might have towards one another allowing them to be able to forgive and love again. We pray for wholeness to return where brokenness has overshadowed the blessings that You so freely are able and willing to give if only they ask. In Your most precious name, Amen. prayers@trinityfreistadt.com Telephone Prayer Chain: Prayer Request Form: You might recall that Trinity's "Nehemiah Project" program was started based on the example found in the Books of Nehemiah and Ezra, in the Old Testament. Crumbling and broken walls surrounded the city of Jerusalem, and despite ongoing repairs at the temple, no wall meant no protection. When Nehemiah stood at a distance and looked at the city, repairing the entire wall seemed impossible. It needed too many men, too much time, too many resources, and there were too many forces opposing it. Nehemiah taught us a great lesson. Tackle one thing at a time. Take one small chunk of need, address it, then move on to the next one. Ironic, isn't it? One of our "next small chunks" of need is the retaining wall system that blankets both sides of our drive-through entrance to the church. Over the years, drainage and settling have begun to buckle the walls, and before they become a danger for collapse, we would like to repair those walls both visually, and structurally. As part of our fall clean-up, Erick is securing quotes for materials and assistance, and although this will be a longer term project in terms of final completion, he would like to get the ball rolling now. At this point, we do not know a full accurate cost for the project, but we would like to raise at least $5,000 to get us started. If you would like to be part of helping with our wall, please contribute whatever you can to October's Nehemiah Project. Nehemiah would be proud! (Donation envelopes can be found in the Gathering Room. Checks payable to Trinity Note: October Nehemiah Project). OCTOBER
