1 WELCOME GUESTS! We are glad you re here! Here are a few things we thought you would like to know to help you feel at home with us today. When we celebrate the Lord s Supper, we do so convinced that Jesus gives us His true body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins. Receiving the Lord s Supper expresses not only fellowship with the Lord, but also agreement with the teachings of this congregation. Communicant members of LC- MS congregations are always welcome to commune with us. All other guests are kindly asked to speak with the pastor before the service. Thank you for respecting our position of love when it comes to this delicate matter. The offering is an opportunity for our members to support the Lord s work at Trinity. As our guest, we ask only that you sign our Friendship Pad as it is passed down the pew. Restrooms are located in the large room adjacent to the sanctuary. Our ushers will be glad to point you in the proper direction. Hearing Assistance This facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an Usher for a receiver. 1 Children are always welcome to worship with us. However, for your convenience, a nursery is available for parents with children 3 years old and younger. It is located on the office level in the childcare room on the right. The nursery is staffed during the T3 hour (Trinity Time Together) & 10:45 am service. Parents may use this room during the 8:00 am service as well, being able to watch the service projected on the TV located in that room. In service to Christ, PASTOR CARL LEHENBAUER PASTOR JOSHUA RUSERT

September 12, :00 PM on PBS The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary for one of the most important events in Western civilization: the birth of an idea that continues to shape the life of every American today. In 1517, power was in the hands of the few, thought was controlled by the chosen, and common people lived lives without hope. On October 31 of that year, a penniless monk named Martin Luther sparked the revolution that would change everything. He had no army. In fact, he preached nonviolence so powerfully that 400 years later Michael King would change his name to Martin Luther King to show solidarity with the original movement. This movement, the Protestant Reformation, changed Western culture at its core, sparking the drive toward individualism, freedom of religion, women's rights, separation of church and state, and even free public education. Without the Reformation, there would have been no pilgrims, no Puritans, and no America in the way we know it. 2

3 Prayer Before Worship Heavenly Father, You have brought me here. I am gathered together with Your people and in Your presence. Don t let me miss the gifts You have for me here. Open my heart. Change me. Make me more like You. In Jesus name, Amen. Luther Hymn of the Week: From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee (#607) Written in 1523 and based on Psalm 130, this hymn originally had four stanzas. A year later, John Walther rewrote the second verse and expanded it into verses two and three. In Wittenberg the hymn soon became a favorite for funerals. In 1525, this hymn was sung at the funeral of Luther s friend and patron, Frederick the Wise, in the castle Church in Wittenburg. In 1545, it was sung at Halle when Luther s body was brought from Isleben to Wittenburg. It was also sung by Luther and his aides at Coburg castle during the Diet of Augsburg. This hymn bears the first tune written by Luther. First Reading: Hebrews 5: 11-6:3 (Pew Bible pg. 1867) We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Anthem: Teach Me Your Way (8:00) Trinity Students Grades 7/8 Second Reading: Romans 1: 1-7 (Pew Bible pg. 1746) Sermon Text Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God--the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. P: This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Gospel Lesson: Matthew 5: 1-12 (Pew Bible pg. 1501) Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 3 Divine Service 4 5:00pm & 8:00am Time of Greeting Opening Hymn #607 Opening Liturgy p. 203 Psalm of the Month Psalm 26 Kyrie p. 204 Gloria in Excelsis p. 204 Glory to God in the Highest Salutation & Collect p. 205 First Reading Anthem: (8:00) Grades 7/8 Second Reading Gospel Creed (Inside back cover of hymnal) Children s Message (8:00) Sermon Hymn #857 Sermon: Rev. From the Business Manager s Desk Traditionally, the 25th wedding anniversary is supposed to be celebrated with a gift of silver. For our 25th, I think I got my wife an oil change for her car. The 27th is supposed to be a sculpture, and the 29th is furniture. Maybe I will do better on these next installments. Does a washer and dryer count as furniture? 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. What is the proper gift for a 500th anniversary? The year 1517 was a rather boring year in history. Cairo was captured by the Ottoman Empire, and there was yet another major outbreak of the "sweating sickness" in England. At the time, no one knew it, but Martin Luther would mark 1517 as the start of something monumental, and a change in Christianity that still has ripple effects today, 500 years later. It seems like the perfect gift to celebrate 500 years with the same gift we've recognized for the last 499 years.... the gift of God's Grace through Jesus. By the way, the Szpiszars just celebrated 55 years of marriage, and I don't see an emerald on Eunice's finger. I better go talk to Dan. 6 September s Nehemiah Project: It s a LIFE SAVER!!! Every second counts when someone s heart stops beating. In the event of such an emergency here at Trinity, we currently have two AED machines (Wall across from Sacristy & Cafeteria) that need immediate updating. Since updating these machines costs almost as much as new machines, Trinity is hoping to raise $2,200 to replace the current AED models with more current models. If you would like to help us raise the funds needed for these machines, please see the display in the Gathering Room. Thank you! Automatic External Defibrillator TRINITY ELECTION NEWS Elections for 3 Board of Lay Leaders members, 1 Endowment Committee member and 1 Elder will take place in November. The Nominating Committee is soliciting candidate names from the congregation. If you would like to suggest a name (even your own name) please provide it to Ginny Jagla- gjagla@gmail.com or or to Lori Scheck in the office. The Nominating Committee will contact the names they receive to determine interest. Thanks for your help. The Nominating Committee includes the following people: Ginny Jagla, Neal Degner, Lucas Dieringer, Brian Forke, Jody Kessel- Szpiszar, Terry Schoessow, Tom Boehlke and Pastor Lehenbauer (ex officio). HYMNS OF MARTIN LUTHER-I think we all enjoyed being able to sing our favorite hymns this summer. Thank you to everyone who submitted their favorite hymn. As we move into fall, we will be focusing on the hymns of Martin Luther in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Each week, we will begin worship with a different Martin Luther hymn. There will also be a bit of information about the hymn in the bulletin for you to read. Thank you for your joyful singing each week as we praise our God together. MY TWO ELAINES Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer's Caregiver On Wednesday, September 13th at 6:00 PM, Trinity will welcome guest speaker, former WI Gov. Martin Schreiber whose wife Elaine has had Alzheimer's disease for over 8 years. Through his experience of being a caretaker for his wife, Gov. Schreiber has learned a lot about caring for Elaine, and a lot about self-care. The talk is free for all who attend and we encourage you to invite others who may benefit from his experiences as well. NO REGISTRATION NEEDED! EXPERIENCE THE HOLY LAND The pages of the Bible are filled with stories of historical events that took place at particular times in real places. Pastor Lehenbauer and Dr. Jan Heinitz will be hosting a 10 day Biblical Tour of Israel in January of This will be an opportunity to grow in the depth of our appreciation for God s Word as we visit sites including the mountain where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal, the valley where David faced Goliath, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Garden Tomb, the City of David, and many other familiar Old and New Testament locations. People who have returned from tours such as this are quick to describe how seeing these sites helps to bring the Bible to life even after you return home, as you can vividly picture the locations and the culture described in the scriptures. On SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th, there will be an informational meeting at noon in the Gathering Room for anyone who is interested. A light lunch will be provided.
