3 TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PROPER 22 October 7, 2018 AS WE GATHER They shall become one flesh (Genesis 2:24b). These timeless words of God speak of the arranged marriage we have received as a gift from our Creator. Man and woman are not the same; we are different. Yet our differences are part of the Maker s design for us to find completion in each other. So it is with Christ. Only in Christ will we find our true identity! Our marriages this side of eternity are arranged by God to reflect the marriage He has established with us for eternity! Christ, our Bridegroom, has cleansed us and made us His own through His blood, shed on the cross. When we are drawn to Him by His Spirit and receive Him through faith, we become the very Bride of Christ. Living as one in this relationship with our Bridegroom and Savior, we then open our eyes to see the blessing He gives to us in the union of Christian marriage. May our Bridegroom bless His Bride as we meet Him at His altar today! P: In a time of silence and prayer, let us approach the Father s throne of grace. (We take a moment of silence for personal reflection and confession of our sins.) P: Most merciful Father, C: we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have drifted from Your commands, choosing to go our own separate ways. We have not honored You as our Creator, nor have we honored one another in love. Grant that by Your Holy Spirit we acknowledge the sacred nature of the gift of marriage, living always as the faithful Bride of Him who has made us His own; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 2: Then the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. 19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. EPISTLE Hebrews 2:1 13 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. 5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere, What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet. And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? 3 He answered them, What did Moses command you? 4 They said, Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away. 5 And Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. 7 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. 13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. 9 THE CREED The Apostles Creed C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. For the growth of God s kingdom of grace, that we live out our identities as sons and daughters of our heavenly Father, let us pray to the Lord. C: Father, we are Your family, created to be Your own. P: For the Christian Church, both here at Cnoncordia and assembled in congregations throughout the world, that we be one as our God is one, let us pray to the Lord. C: Father, we are Your family, redeemed and restored in Christ. P: For all pastors, teachers, musicians, missionaries, and other servants of the Church, that they find joy in their callings, let us pray to the Lord. C: Father, we are Your family, blessed by those who serve and lead. P: For all husbands and wives, moms and dads, daughters and sons, and every member of every Christian family, that we live out our unique vocations in joy and peace, let us pray to the Lord. 16 Concordia Lutheran Church s Covenant with One Another How Do We Love One Another at Concordia Lutheran Church? 1. We will behave in a spirit of forgiveness always speaking well of others with love and kindness knowing that God created every human being in His image and we will always show respect for others despite our mutual failures, acknowledging shortfalls and willing to forget prior harms. 2. We will promote and practice honest conversations following the 8 th Commandment to speak well of each other, avoiding gossip by redirecting people to the appropriate person and avoiding anything that would cause divisions in the Body of Christ. 3. We will lift up each other in prayer in all that we do by turning to God for guidance and support, showing our gratitude and thanksgiving, and realizing we depend on Him for our entire existence. 4. We will offer a hand of hospitality welcoming all people by acknowledging the presence of others, greeting everyone with concern for them and openly sharing our biblical faith with everyone in word and deed. 5. We will be positive and joyful sharing openly our happiness in the Lord with fun, positive humor and inclusive fellowship always defending each other, speaking well of each other, and putting the best construction on everything.
