2 Camerontary Have you ever stopped to consider how different your life would be if not for a particular person? A spouse, a child, a teacher, a trusted mentor, the bully who made your life miserable, just to name a few. The movie, It s a Wonderful Life, goes through the process of discovering how different other peoples lives would be if not for the protagonist played by Jimmy Stewart. I know we go through the process of realizing how much different our lives will be without someone we have loved and lost. I can t imagine that I am the only one who looks at some of the people in my life and wonders how radically different things would have turned out if I had not met one particular person at the moment that I did. A few years ago, I was walking behind our family group, Becky, children, their spouses, and their children. I marveled that without my having met and married Becky this group would not exist. Erin and Andrew, daughter and son-in-law, could have been born, however without Becky in my life they would have missed their respective spouses and things would be very different for each of them. Though they did not enter the mix of the moment, Aaron s first wife, who helped us realize more deeply what a treasure of a person we have in Erin, and Ethan s father, both make an ongoing difference in our family. So, if I had not met and married Becky, I am One choice opens a whole new set of choices sure I would have made a whole different set of life choices that would have completely altered the trajectory that is my life. Which means that I probably would not have met most of you, because I would not be your pastor. One choice opens a whole new set of choices in our lives that lead to vastly different outcomes. I met David when we became the pastors of two congregations that had been served together by a clergy couple. The congregations decided to split, and each would get a pastor of their own. David served one congregation and I the other. One day he invited me to play basketball with a group of other clergy. I went once. It was okay, but I was so out of shape that I played an hour of basketball with pain and racing heart rate the rest of the day. I decided not to go back. One of the folks I met intrigued me and I set up a time for lunch with him that I later discovered was the day and time that this same group of pastors played basketball and ate lunch together. That intriguing guy was Bob Walters. I have met some very interesting people because I first met you. Because you and I met each other, I have met a lot of other interesting people. Some of those people have been relationships that lasted only a moment, others have blossomed; all because you took the time to introduce me after we met each other. And then there is Jesus. In my case, everyone I know has something to do with Jesus and my everevolving relationship with him. I met people because we lived in cities and towns where dad had been appointed as pastor of a congregation in the community. I went to a church related college so even the people who did not have a direct relationship with Jesus Christ were at that school because many years earlier a group of church people thought it would be a great idea to serve Jesus by starting a college. It would meet the needs of young people seeking an education, including Becky and me. I went to a seminary or two that set as their mission the training of men and women for varieties of Christian service. We met people because we lived in rural areas, cities, and towns where I had been appointed as pastor of a congregation in the community. One person can make a world of difference in someone s life. Since we are coming up on the season in which It s a Wonderful Life will play multiple times, I invite you to take a moment to consider how some people have changed your life and how you have touched and changed the life of someone else. 4 2nd Annual Crafters Market-Nov. 3 Once again this year we will have a Crafters Market in the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, November 3, from 8:00 a.m. 2 p.m. This Market will feature all handmade items from area vendors as well as our church folks. There will be a Cookie and Sweets Room for your homemade goodies along with our homemade noodles. If you know of any crafty people that might want a table, please let Vicki Clem know, We will have our own craft table, so if you have any items that you would like to donate, it will be appreciated. There will be lunch for a cost, as well as coffee and donuts. Here s where we need some help: Silent Auction Kitchen Craft Area Country Store (Cookies & Sweets Room) So, get those homemade goodies baking and crafts finished! General Questions? 5 Operation Christmas Child It will soon be time to pack and collect shoeboxes for Operation Christmas child. National collection week is November I have 50 of the new corrugated cardboard shoeboxes which I ordered from Samaritan s Purse. (You won t have to provide your own boxes this year!) I also have brochures and prayer bookmarks. Watch for the display in the Narthex. Boxes will be available in the church office. - Pat Garrity IMPACT Conference Team Our team will meet on October 11 to review our team work for the next conference meeting. The next Conference meeting will be November 17 at Andrew UMC, 2560 Villa Avenue, Indianapolis. The sessions will meet from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Please pick up your manual for Session 2 from the office. Bring a lunch; coffee and water will be provided by the host church. Charge Conference Charge Conference has been set for Sunday, November 11, 6:00 p.m., at Epworth UMC on Allisonville. All paperwork must be into the district office by Oct. 26. Please check your church mailbox for paperwork that needs updates and return to office by October 24. Thank you Pastor Cindy wants to give a special shout-out to Pastor Cameron! Though it is hidden behind the altar rail, he has built and finished a beautiful conducting podium for her to stand on. It enables the choir to see her well and also allows the choir to angle toward the congregation, thus creating a better choral sound. The podium is a work of art, perfectly customized to the space, beautifully finished, and even has a fancy little pull-out step for easy access! Check it out if you have a chance! All Saint s Service Sunday, November 4, is our All Saint s Service. Please share the names of loved ones who have died in the past year to us so that we can include their names in the worship service. Recycle Project Buddy Bench Thanks for all the lids you have brought for our Buddy Bench project. Please note that these lids must all be recyclable, no metal lids. A student can use the bench to let others know that they are lonely and would love to have some compassionate company from a fellow classmate. They are not for socializing. The buddy bench was a dream of a student in Ft. Wayne and she has now had three Buddy Benches placed at her elementary school. Children helping children! It takes 400 pounds of plastic to make a Buddy Bench. (That s a LOT of large garbage bags!) We can help get a school closer to their goal of getting a Buddy Bench or two. Save those caps! Fill Those Laundry Baskets Don t forget your items for the laundry baskets for Feed the Need (toiletries, socks, underwear) along with your food items.
