3 PAGE 3 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHU RCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) More Worship News World Communion/Reconciliation Sunday October 7th On Sunday, October 7th, we will gather with millions of Christians around the world during our Sunday worship time, remembering that we are united in the Body of Christ, and to remember that we are called to share the grace of God s table with all of God s children. The Special Offering for Reconciliation Ministries is used to fund our (DoC) Church s mission imperative to become a proreconciling and antiracist church utilizing experiential education, inclusive worship and intentional dialogue. Our efforts to promote healing, relationship and restoration in the whole family of God are enlivened by funds from this offering. Iron Horse Sunday October 14th We will have a simple communion service after we host the breakfast for the Iron Horse Half Marathon patrons on Sunday, October 14th. Helpers are needed for the breakfast! If you are able to walk or carpool to church, please do. Parking may be very limited! Regional Assembly Reports October 21st Shirley Eckels and John Batts will report on their experiences at the Christian Church in KY Regional Assembly in Louisville on October Children s Sabbath October 28th Theme: 27 th Annual National Observance of Children s Sabbaths Celebration: Realizing Dr. King s Vision for Every Child: Lives of Hope, Not Despair Please come and support our children and youth as they lead this service! Pastoral Word New Prayer Chain Lists to Replace Flock Lists A few months ago, the elders realized that the flock lists just weren t working. The flocks were trying to fill roles that they were never designed to do. In talking with the elders, we decided to reclaim the original intent of the lists: care for and communication with our members. We created the attached prayer chain list. It is our hope that this allows the elders to serve in the roles given to them by this congregation: to be the spiritual leaders of our community of faith while extending care to our members. How the prayer chain will work: when the office/or Heather receives word about a concern within our congregation, the office/heather will send out an to the elders, letting them know what is going on. The elders will then contact the people on his or her prayer chain, sharing the information. That s the communication part of the list. The care part of the list comes in with the connection to a particular elder. Instead of people not knowing what flock he or she is on, our members are under the care of one elder. Along with the minister, this elder will extend pastoral care to the members on his or her list, checking in with them, visiting if they are in the hospital, etc. Please hear us say that this is an experiment. It is by no means perfect. It will need some tweaks as we go along. But the elders believed that as we look at the transformation of our community of faith, we needed to develop a better way to respond to the amazing things God is doing in our midst. The prayer chain lists can be found on the back of the October calendar in the newsletter. Please let Heather know if you have any questions or would like more information. 9 PAGE 7 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHU RCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) October Mission Payments: Mission News and Notes Christmount Christian Assembly Christmount is a retreat, camp, and conference center whose mission is to provide opportunities in the heart of the North Carolina mountains for Christian hospitality, rest for the soul, and renewal for the journey. Christmount is a recognized ministry partner of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). (from the Christmount website) Disciples Mission Fund The Disciples Mission Fund builds a foundation enabling Disciples to globally share the good news of Jesus Christ. This common fund allows the Disciples to pool their resources accomplishing a greater ministry. One congregation could not achieve this alone. Disciples Mission Fund allows a process of whole church stewardship supporting Godgiven missions at home and worldwide. They live their theological understanding of Christ's prayer "that they all may be one." As a faithful growing church, Disciples demonstrate true sense of community, deep Christian spirituality, and a passion for justice. (from Disciples Mission Fund website) Week of Compassion Donations Help Disaster Victims Give Now! If you are tempted to try to go and physically help the victims of Hurricane Florence don t! The best help we can offer is always our prayers and financial gifts. They are the best way for us to say, to affected Disciples and their communities, that we are with you, we are here for you, we care. (Disciples Home Missions) If you are looking for a mission trip where you CAN be of help, the victims of previous disasters in Texas, Missouri, West Virginia, Florida, and Puerto Rico are in need of volunteers who can help rebuild.
