We will have a potluck breakfast at 9 am. At 9:30 am we will hold our Congregational Meeting where we will be voting on the slate of officers and the proposed budget for 2010/2011. Everyone is asked to attend and bring a breakfast item, such as casseroles, fruit, donuts, etc. Summer Series: Think Globally, Act Locally We are looking at doing VBS a little differently this year. It will be intergenerational and we will meet one night each week for three weeks during the month of July. There will dinner at 6:00 p.m. for those who would like to partake and the evening activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. The kids are invited to come at 4:00 p.m. to help prepare dinner. Monday, July 12th: June Mitchell and Wilda Caudle will be talking to us about canning and will be teaching us how to make freezer jam. To get ready for the series, please start freezing strawberries if you want to make strawberry freezer jam. They will not be in season in July. We will also be using other fruit but strawberry freezer jam is a favorite! Monday, July 19th: We will go to God s Garden, the community garden of the Catholic Action Center. God s Garden is two acres of organic vegetables that will become food for those in need in our community. Volunteers from the community, the guests of the Catholic Action Center work in the garden together. It is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives and health of men, women, and children. ( Monday, July 26th: Janet Mullins is going to do a nutritional/cooking class on What to do with our summer veggies? Budget Update Budgeted to date: $153, Received to date: $144, (as of May 23)

2 PAGE 2 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) A Pastoral Word I am taking up a new spiritual discipline, running. I m sure many of you may be thinking how is running a spiritual discipline. Well, for starters, running pushes me out of my comfort zone. Sure I can jog but now I am training to run a 5K in August which means 3 days a week, I am forcing myself to do something I would rather not do or comfortable doing. Also running is helping give structure to my day and is making me committed to something that is bigger than me. The alarm clock now goes off at 6:30 a.m. instead of remaining silent during the week. My alarm to wake me up used to be our 20 lb cat who when he decided I had slept enough would sit on my chest and graciously and loudly MEOW in my ear! When the alarm goes off now, I get out bed, do some stretching, slip on my running shoes, turn on my IPOD and begin running. I have discovered that if I don t get my run in in the morning I feel like I have missed an important commitment. The other part of running being a spiritual discipline is keeping my word. When Mike was training for his half-iron in May, I made a promise (or bet if you will) that if he finished his race than I would run the 5K that is part of the SMA race in August and he clarified, not run/walk it but run it! (3.1 miles to be exact!). So after he finished, I began training! I talked with Sandy Gruzesky before I started training and she said that after a while, when you find your rhythm while running, you get into a very Zen-like state. I m not there yet but I am getting small glimpses of what Sandy was talking about while running. It s just me out there on my run. My mind is quiet. I concentrate on my breathing. And then Zen, at least for a while, until my mind starts thinking, You re running. You don t do this! So another part of my spiritual discipline of running is putting mind over matter, removing the obstacles that I keep putting in my own path, overcoming my fears of failure, overcoming that little voice that says Heather, you don t run., and overcoming my worries. So for the next nine weeks, if you see me running around Midway, don t be alarmed. Your minister hasn t lost her mind, well, at least not yet. While running, I m testing my strength. While running, I m testing my courage to complete the journey. While running, I m testing my endurance. While running, I m finding out more and more about myself. While running, I m quieting those voices that tell me I can t do it. While running, I m growing in faith. As Christians, there are many passages from Isaiah that we interpret through the lens of Jesus Christ: For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore and But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed. The book of Isaiah appears to be one single unit by one single author but in reality the book of Isaiah has at least two, maybe three authors. The book of Isaiah is one of the books that most of us turn to in times when we need to find hope once more as God s people. The imagery, the language, the inspiration that can be found in the words of the prophet Isaiah are what makes this one of the most beloved books of the Bible. So come, join us on Sunday mornings for Sunday School which begins at 9:30 a.m. with sharing of joys and concerns.

You know what that means, SUMMER YOUTH ACTIVITIES! First on our agenda this summer is the Chi Rho mission trip to Chicago with Crestwood Christian Church. We will be traveling with Crestwood Christian Church to Chicago to learn about inner city poverty and some of its causes. I invite you to keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we open our minds and hearts that week. Also, our regional office offers a variety of camp experiences for our youth and children. Please make sure to visit the regional website at or call myself or Heather about these opportunities. If you are interested please sign up as soon as possible because these camps fill up fast! We are still working on when to schedule Kids in the Kitchen this month, I will keep you posted on those details through and the One Call Now Service. My last day as your Student Associate Minister will be June 20 th. I have been incredibly blessed to have had this year and half to grow and journey with you as your pastor and your friend. I cannot possibly express my thanks for all that you have done for me and for my family. Please know that you are loved and that you will always have a special place in my heart and in my ministry. At the end of June I will be moving home to Akron, Ohio to live with my parents while I search for a call. I was approved by the region of Ohio and the elders at my home church for ordination on May 16 th. I will be ordained at First Christian Church, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on August 22 nd at 2pm. You all are welcome to come up and share in this joyous occasion with me. I will be sending a formal invitation to the church office in July. Again, thank you for this time to journey with you. I love you all very dearly. God bless you, and I wish you all the best! Upcoming Summer Activities: For 1st-5th Graders: We have been invited to Crestwood Christian Church on Friday, June 11th for a Movie Day from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. There will be popcorn, drinks and fun! Please let Heather know if you want to attend. For 6th-12th Graders: We have been invited to go to the Life Adventure Center in Versailles on Thursday, June 17th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We will be doing the low and high ropes challenge. 5 PAGE 5 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) Mission News and Notes Meals on Wheels Many thanks to the Meals on Wheels team that served the week of May 24: Phil Burchell, Pat Wilson, Priscilla Crutcher, Phil & Nancy Dare, Buddy & Gertrude Johnson. The next delivery is June 21. June Mission Payment Disciples Mission Fund builds a foundation enabling Disciples to globally share the good news of Jesus Christ. This common fund allows the Disciples to pool their resources accomplishing a greater ministry. One congregation could not achieve this alone. Disciples Mission Fund allows a process of whole church stewardship supporting God-given missions at home and world-wide. They live their theological understanding of Christ's prayer "that they all may be one." As a faithful growing church, Disciples demonstrate true sense of community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice. Soles4Souls Shoe Drive A Big Success Midway Christian Church collected 100 pairs of shoes and close to 1,000 pairs have been collected at all three Midway collection sites! To date, Soles4Souls has distributed shoes to people in over 125 countries, including the U.S. Soles4Souls distributes these shoes free of charge to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, over 7 million pairs of shoes has been given away. Thank you for all your donations! Together we can make a difference, one pair at a time! Green Chalice Ministry Team Digging out the Rain Garden It took us a while but we got the rain garden dug out! The joke between the Green Chalice Team was that our rain garden turned into a rain dance! On Thursday, May 20th, a group from the local Green Space Committee and a few members from our Green Chalice Team were able to start digging. The next step is adding native plans. Watch for more to come!

If you are interested in going, please call the church office to RSVP. We must fax in our lunch order before we arrive. There is a copy of the menu in the church office. Elders Equus Run Meeting Fundraiser Sunday, June 27 June 12 and July 17 Disciples for Habitat Needs Your Help The Elders will meet Sunday, June 27 at 6 pm. Please mark your calendars. We will have our retreat on Saturday, July 17 at noon. Disciples for Habitat is building a home at 501 Rain Garden St., Lexington. We will be building our 27th house from Saturday, May 29 Saturday, July 3. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the church office. We ve been asked to help park cars again this year at Equus Run. We do this as a church fund-raiser but from the comments that have been shared, MCC has a great time at the event as well. Jody s Farewell Lunch On Sunday, June 13th, the congregation of Midway Christian Church is invited to a farewell potluck lunch immediately after church to say good-bye to Jody and to say thank you for her years of ministry with us and with our children and youth of our church. Everyone is invited to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert. Jody s last Sunday with us will be Sunday, June 20th. Please join us as we say good-bye to Jody and we celebrate her new beginnings in the life of the church.

Regards, Amanda Sparrow The Nature Conservancy Francisco s Farm Art Festival 2010 June 26 & 27 ~ Saturday 10-6, Sunday 10-5 $5.00 per vehicle, Saturday visitors return free on Sunday There will be 150 Artists from 16 States. The primary focus of the Francisco's Farm Arts Festival is the outdoor exhibition of juried fine art and fine craft, giving our audience the opportunity to meet the artists as well as purchase their art. Thank You The Disciples on Campus (DOC) would like to thank Midway Christian Church who supported our Alternative Spring Break Trip to Matamoras, Mexico. This year we had 27 college students and adults from six different schools in three states join together for this life changing adventure. The gift of your money made all of the wonderful experiences possible, without your support and love, the trip would not have happened. So from the bottom of our heart, Thank You! To My Midway Family When my parents decided to move to Louisville four years ago, leaving Midway Christian was one of the things I dreaded most. But I shouldn t have. No, even as my visits to MCC have become limited to my trips home from SC, each time I enter those doors I feel as though I never left. You re all always quick to welcome me in your arms for a warm hug, a comforting smile, and the latest updates. No matter where my life may take me (maybe one day even back to Midway!)
