2 PAGE 2 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) Pastoral Word: Member Spotlight Church News and Notes It is hard to believe that I am talking about Advent in the beginning of November but it will be here before we know. That time of year when life rushes by, when we run to the malls looking for that one last present, and when we become so exhausted that we don t even want to be around people because we are on people overload! It is the most wonderful time of the year! This year, I am inviting all of our members at Midway Christian Church to join in the conspiracy, The Advent Conspiracy. The Advent Conspiracy was started in 2006 by five pastors who decided to take back Christmas a revolutionary event by encouraging their faith communities to worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all. The facts are staggering! Americans spend an average of $450 billion a year every Christmas. And it cost $10 billion for clean water to be available for the whole world! ( What if this year, we pledged to be a part of the conspiracy and said no to consumerism and yes to relationships? What if this year, we reclaim the Advent season as a time to prepare for the coming king, to slow down and invite God into our lives? What if we turned off the noise of the season to tune into the small still voice of God? This year for Advent, which begins on Sunday, November 29th, we will take a look at how we as people of faith can worship more fully, give more, love all, and spend less as we celebrate and anticipate the coming of the newborn king. We truly feel we were brought to Midway by God. When you want to know if God has a sense of humor... just tell him what you have planned for your life. In the spring of 2005 we were happily settled in our "life" in Frankfort. We had just finished remodeling our first home after 11 years of work and then the unextected happened. We up and sold our house, moved to Midway, downsized by moving into a condo on Higgins Street. We lived there a year and then decided we were again ready to remodel another house and moved to Cross Street. WHEW! We met on October 25, 1991 when a mutual friends, Linda and DC Clark of Versailles, decided to play matchmakers and invited us to a Halloween party with 148 of their other "close" friends. The rest as they say is history. The Clark's hosted our wedding on October 16, Rick grew up in Millville and graduated from Woodford County High School. He is a veteran having retired from the US Navy in He has worked with Sorg Heating and Cooling in Frankfort for 29 years. He enjoys "honey do" remodeling projects, cooking burgoo, and being a behind the scenes guy at Midway Christian Church. Wilda grew up in Muhlenburg County and graduated from Greenville High School. She has enjoyed various forms of employment which include being a national makeup artist for Elizabeth Arden cosmetics, a wig and makeup artist for the Kentucky Opera, and other various things before settling down in the legal profession as a paralegal. Wilda obtained her paralegal degree from Midway College in She is presently employed by the Finance and Administration Cabinet, Department of Revenue, Office of Legal Services. Wilda is presently an elder and has been active on the missions committe, outreach programs at MCC and one of Midway's own resident clowns, Bubbles.. We are the proud grandparents of Austin, age 9, Jacob age 4, and Bailey 10 months. Wilda & Rick Caudle

We started out the month with making blankets for Project Linus. We made two blankets that will be sent and given to children who have experienced trauma in their lives. Thanks to everyone who participated! We also took a trip to Bi Water farm and got to enjoy some good old fashion farm fun! We came, we went we saw and everyone had a great time! Kids in the kitchen was an incredible experience. We had approximately twelve children and youth all under the direction of Ouita Michel and together we prepared an Italian feast. We learned about hospitality, safety in the kitchen, and teamwork. Thanks to all who participated and those who came to enjoy the feast with us! Also that same Sunday we had Children s Sabbath. I d like to extend my thanks to everyone who participated in Children s Sabbath. Special thanks go out to our fabulous choir director Stephanie, who got S.O.W.E.R.S. started and fulfilled a dream of Midway Christian Church of having a youth and children s choir. So what s next? 5 PAGE 5 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) Mission News and Notes Meals on Wheels Many thanks to the Meals on Wheels team that served the week of October 12: Charlann Wombles, Buddy & Gertrude Johnson, Pat Wilson, Phil & Nancy Dare, Pat Settlemire. The next Meals on Wheels delivery is the week of November 9. November Mission Payments Hope Ministries Food Pantry: This is a community supported food bank which is available for people in need within our community. It is located at 299 S. Main Street in Versailles. It is open Monday and Friday from 2-4 pm and on Wednesday from 10 am-noon. In order to obtain food one must first apply at the Community Action Agency. Clients receive a grocery cart containing meat, cheese and butter. They are also able to choose items such as canned vegetables & fruits among other items. The Hope Ministries Food Pantry works with God s Pantry to obtain various food items but relies on community donations for most of the items that fill their shelves. November Mission: Collecting Items To Fill Christmas Stockings MCC will be collecting items to fill stockings for children of inmates. These stockings will be given to the children as they leave the jail after visiting their family member on the week before Christmas. You can t imagine the excitement of the children as they receive the stockings. A little effort from each of you will bring a great deal of joy to some child. Overall, the chaplaincy office of the division of community corrections is looking to fill 250 stockings with nongender items because the officers cannot know how many boys or girls will come on any night. Items needed are: small toys, books, coloring books, crayons, mittens, stretch hats, packaged snacks, candy bars and stuffed animals. All items must be into the church by Sunday, November 15. Disciples Women Quadrennial Assembly Quadrennial Assembly of the Disciples Women will be held June 23-27, 2010, in Greensboro NC. Anyone who is thinking about going to this wonderful event that happens only once every four years, should let Heather or Sharon Burchell know soon. There is scholarship money available. Troop 40 has been very active recently. The weekend of October 17 th and 18 th we biked the Little Miami Trail, in OH. The following scouts and leaders biked 25 miles: Thomie Wilson, Gregory Watson, Collin Craig, Christian Sandrock, Chris Rose, and Ben Tonges. The Leaders were Mike Hagan and Robert Richardson. The following scouts and leader biked 50 miles: Chris Rathbone, Neil Monroe, Tim Hagan, Peyton Floyd, Chase Conder, and Reid Richardson along with leader Sam Conder. Leaders Jay Schwalbach and Jeff Floyd also came along to watch the campsite and bring us lunch halfway. You may have seen our troop at the Fall Festival, where we were volunteering our time gathering trash and recycling. On Monday September 21, we held a court of honor where many merit badges were awarded and ranks achieved. Steve is the choir director at Beaumont Middle School as well as an accomplished church musician. He is an excellent clinician with a real heart for worship.
