3 PAGE 3 THE CONTACT MIDWAY CHRISTIAN CHU RCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) More Worship News Worship Theme for September: Won t You Be My Neighbor? In September, we will continue exploring just who is our neighbor, what it means to live in community with one another, and participating in something sacred as we look for the best in each other. So it s a beautiful day in the neighborhood; won t you be our neighbor? Casual Sunday - September 16th Bring a friend! In the midst of Fall Festival craziness, we sometimes forget about our Sunday morning worship. That s why the Worship committee wants to offer everyone a chance to come as you are for rest and renewal. We will have a casual service in the Fellowship Hall to share our stories of what wowed us this summer. We are asking everyone to send Heather their pictures of where they saw God this summer. We will put these together as a video as part of our worship service for the day. Our worship service will be a simple service with music and communion, but more importantly, it will be a time to remind ourselves, once again, that during the craziness of life, there is always time to find the quiet center with God. Worship at The Homeplace Sunday, September 23rd, 12:45 Midway Christian Church leads worship for the residents of The Homeplace at Midway on the 4th Sunday of odd-numbered months. That s right! 175 looks good on us. We are making plans for a year-long celebration for our 175th anniversary next year. On Thursday, September 6th at 6:30 p.m., we will have an initial anniversary planning meeting. All those who are interested in helping out, please join us as we begin thinking about how we want to celebrate this big event. We are also asking for everyone s help with a special project for our anniversary. Melinda Whitehead has agreed to make a special banner for the occasion. In the narthex, there will be a basket with assorted fabric squares. We are asking everyone to please take a square, trace your hand upon the square, cut the hand pattern out, and return it to the church. These will be added to the banner. Our hope is to dedicate the banner in January 2019 to be our wall hanging for our 175th year. The banner will look something like this when it is finished (see picture at right). If you have any questions or would like to help out with this project, please let Heather or Melinda know. The date of the Celebration has been set for July 7, ***Please see the Insert for Green Chalice News***

Green Chalice Joining KY Interfaith Power & Light (KIPL) MCC recently received a letter from Tim Darst, Executive Director of Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light inviting us to become a member, to support their mission of Care of Creation. At the Green Chalice meeting August 16 (previously scheduled for August 9) and the Admin Team meeting August 12, we discussed MCC s becoming a member of Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light (KIPL). Both groups agreed in their respective meetings to joining KIPL at the $250 "Earth Steward" level and agreed to using $100 from the "Regional Green Chalice" item on the Missions Budget plus $150 from the "Lay Leadership" item of Restricted Funds. The "Regional Green Chalice" is inactive at this time and the "Lay Leadership" fund has not been used for some time. The groups agreed both of these fund sources were compatible with the mission of KIPL. MCC is a Certified Green Chalice Congregation

8 Insert - Page 2 The Contact Midway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Christmount Retreats Women s Discovery Retreat: September 7-9 Retreats, Seminars, continued... Theme: Life Rhythms of Faith (Return & Rest; Redeem & Restore; Reclaim & Remember) The rhythm of our lives can become stagnant and stuck. As we gain experience in life, we sometimes also put to the side our curiosity, imagination, creativity, and willingness to explore and expand our understandings of ourselves and of God. Our community of women gathered will offer us a time to be together as we reclaim ourselves and our life rhythms of faith. Speaker: Rev. Sheila Hunter Young Adult Retreat: Sympathy for the Devil October For young adults over 22 years of age, this event is open to single or married young adults, but housing for married couples is not available for you to be together. This is a great weekend in the western NC mountains, and there is plenty of time for both program activities and leisure as well. Some of the hard questions we're going to explore: How can we learn to love even our most terrible neighbors, and what does that look like? In a world as polarized as the one we live in now, how do we find and share the love of God? How do we develop sympathy for the Devil? Can we? Should we? Speaker: Amanda Billy. Chautauqua: Holy Humor: Laugh Your Way to Grace October Featured preacher is the Reverend Susan Sparks, Sr. Minister of Madison Avenue Baptist Church in New York City. As a trial lawyer turned standup comedian and a minister in the American Baptist tradition, Susan is America's only female comedian with a pulpit! She's a North Carolina native, a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University Law School. Check out her first book, Laugh Your Way to Grace: Reclaiming the Spiritual Power of Humor. Call or visit christmount.org for more info. Connecting Communities with Compassion and Care Wednesday, September 26, 9:00-12:00, Hotel Louisville, Louisville Suite Presented by the National Benevolent Association and Christian Church in KY, you are invited to join in the conversation about health and social service ministries with the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (DoC), Rev.
