Social Opportunities for Intentional Listening (S.O.I.L.) YOUTH/Adult Summer Eco-Justice Camp! July 24-28, 2017 (Register by Feb. 1 for $275, Cost is $325 after Feb. 1) Christmount Christian Assembly, Black Mountain, NC Green Chalice and Christmount are partnering for a pilot intergenerational project. This camp/mission experience explores the landscape of our faith as you've never seen it before: through the lens of sustainability, justice, service and action. On this week-long journey situated in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, groups will learn about some of the most challenging environmental issues impacting our world today. Participants will explore complex sustainability challenges and meet churches engaged in environmental/social justice in their own communities. This trip is about listening to stories, seeing impacts firsthand, and reflecting on how you can champion causes important to you: food & faith, climate, pollution, health, poverty, and race and reconciliation. This will be a service-learning/mission-trip experience that is rooted in your community and culminates in a camp that includes spiritual formation, social justice, creation care and community building. Something like summer camp, mission trip, model UN and a Ted Talks Conference combined. Experience a rich eco-system of worship, learning, work & play. Teams of 6-12 people (with at least half of whom are youth ages 12-18), from churches engaged in creation care and/or social justice work in their community. MCC is a Cerfied Green Chalice Congregaon

7 Insert - Page 2 The Contact Midway Chrisan Church (Disciples of Christ) Possible Sponsoring of Refugee Family On Monday, January 9, representatives of a group of churches in Woodford Co (primarily Midway) met with Dabney Parker of Kentucky Refugee Ministries to learn what assistance church organizations can provide to refugee families. These churches were represented at this educational meeting: Midway Presbyterian, Versailles Presbyterian, Midway United Methodist, and Midway Christian Church. Dabney explained that when a new refugee family arrives, they have spent much time (often 10 to 20 years!) waiting in another country while being vetted by UN agencies and the US government, passing through 20 layers of screening. Families who come to our area may be Syrian or Congolese, Butanese or Iraqi, or from some other place they have fled because of violence. This group of churches is exploring committing to co-sponsor a refugee family. Co-sponsorship involves the following: Setting up an apartment with furnishings, food, and supplies (the apartment is rented through KRM) Welcoming them at the airport and providing a simple, culturally appropriate meal at their new home the day they arrive Providing seasonal clothing Transporting to medical appointments Helping with English skills, financial education, and job development (KRM provides classes for these areas and we would back up what they are already learning) Assisting with transportation (they will be on a bus line, but will need transportation to classes, etc.) Acclimating them to their new community Providing friendship and welcoming hospitality Providing a total of $2500 to KRM for rent and other assistance. Co-sponsorship support is intended to last only as long as it takes to allow the family to become self-sufficient. KRM usually plans for this to be 120 days after the family arrives in the U.S., however, individual circumstances may cause that to be extended occasionally. Most of the churches in this group are not in a place financially to add even a portion of the $2500 to their budgets, so we are looking for individual donations to help this one family. Perhaps you also know friends or coworkers who would be interested in contributing. KRM can only enter into a co-sponsorship agreement with an established organization, and as this group of churches is not a single established organization, Midway Presbyterian agreed to serve in this role. This group of churches coming together not only allows for the combining of financial resources, but also provides a greater pool of people to invest their time in transporting, supporting and acclimating the family. A more detailed schedule of volunteer jobs is on the office bulletin board. On Monday, February 6, at 6:00 PM, our group of church representatives will meet again at Midway Presbyterian. You re invited to attend. At that time, we ll learn which churches want to be involved and decide if we definitely want to pursue co-sponsoring a new refugee family sometime in the next several months with KRM. And we ll decide on a name for our group! Your input is welcomed. Contact Sandy Gruzesky, Mary Weese, or any of the three co-chairs of this new ministry: Darlene Snyder, darlene.snyder52@gmail.com; Jerry Sevier, jerry@mbswriting.com; or Melissa Bane Sevier, melissa@mbswriting.com.
