NEWS & EVENTS Board of Stewards Meeting Tuesday, July 21st at 6 pm The Board of Stewards will meet Tuesday, July 21st in the Cokesbury Center at 6 pm. This will be our first Board meeting with new Senior Pastor, Rev. David Freeman! Financial Small Group Discussion July 22nd at 5:30 pm, Room 204 A couple of weeks ago a letter to the congregation announced the implementation of financial controls that will result in expenditure reductions for the balance of 2015, 2016 and possibly beyond. At the conclusion of the letter, anyone who had unanswered questions or who wants to delve deeper into the details was invited to participate in a small group session. An additional session has been added on Wednesday, July 22nd at 5:30 pm in Room 204. Please call the Church Office on or Kassandra Johnson at kjohnson@fumclr.org if you would like to be included. Other times will be scheduled if needed. Save your Greeting Cards! Betsy Hoffman re-purposes greeting cards to make new cards for inmates at Tucker Prison. Please turn in any cards collected to the church office. Thank you so much. MISSION & OUTREACH A New Step Volunteer to Tutor! Mary Hawks has tutored with FUMC s A New Step program for five semesters. When asked why Mary tutors, she replied: I ve enjoyed tutoring with others from our church. This little time in the school gives me a chance to experience the energy and enthusiasm of these fourth and fifth graders. It s a unique opportunity to get to know students in a comfortable, fun setting while demonstrating how important their education is to us. StewPot Ministry Opportunity - July 28th We will be serving lunch at the 1st Presbyterian 8th & Scott Streets for our Stewpot Ministry on July 28th from 11:45 to 1 PM. 3 FIRST YOUTH August 3rd-8th This Summer we are offering a week of uniquely interwoven service experiences. Students will discover new and interesting things about our city. Their eyes will be opened to just how much everything we do matters in the Kingdom of God. Our week will include a float trip and will wrap up with an evening at Wild River Country and a lock-in at the church. Registration forms are available in the Youth Studio. For more information contact Austin ahubbard@fumclr.org Attention Parents, & Volunteers! Starting this August, we are reviving the Youth Ministry Team. This committee of sorts existed before our strategic plan and the reorganization of our ministry teams. Thinking the Grow in Faith team would suffice for performing the tasks of the Youth Ministry Team, we put a hold on meeting as the YMT. However, we ve discovered that though the Grow in Faith team is productive and meeting its goals, it does not meet the same needs we covered in the Youth Ministry Team. So we re bringing it back, and we d love to have you be a part! We need students, parents, and volunteers to assist the Director of Youth Ministries in planning, communicating, and implementing all things relevant to Youth FUMC. If you have questions or would like to be involved, please contact Austin Hubbard by Ext.201. Guest Worship Leader in First Word - July 26th! Gable Bradley is a singer/songwriter from Hot Springs, Arkansas. He spends his time touring the South with his band, performing a variety of original music and classic covers. While his current venues are festivals, restaurants and more secular locations, he got his start leading worship for several United Methodist churches and events around Arkansas. Playing music is his passion and Gable loves the opportunity to get back to his roots through worship music. FRIENDS & FAMILY Sympathy Sympathy to Mimi Hurst and family following the death of her mother, Margaret Myer, on June 20th. Sympathy to Michael Poole and family following the death of his grandmother, Gloria Poole, on June 23rd. Sympathy to Pamela Owen following the death of her father, Jack Owen, on July 13th. Congratulations Congratulations to Anthony and Becky Falkowski on the birth of their granddaughter, Abigail Lily, born July 15th. 5 Cottage Meetings with Rev. Freeman! Over the next several weeks, Rev. Freeman will be holding cottage meetings with as many groups in the church as possible. These are informal gatherings, mostly meeting in people s homes, for us to get to know one another. He wants to hear about your hopes and dreams for First Church and where you see God leading us. Please consider attending one of these gatherings. If you would like to register or schedule a cottage meeting for your group, please contact Kassandra Johnson ( or kjohnson@fumclr.org). THIRD AGERS Fighting Fraud in Arkansas- July 31st Friday, July 31st at noon we will listen to Hank Klein, tell about AARP S Fraud Watch program in our state...subtitled How Cons Succeed. Hank is a volunteer who founded and directs Arkansans Against Abusive Payday Lending, dedicated to stopping the abuses to consumers by predatory lenders in our state. He ended his distinguished 38-year career after 18 years as the President/CEO of Arkansas Federal Credit Union. Financial fraud and identity theft are rampant in our state, and our own Pat and John Lile have a tale to tell of fraud perpetrated on them in May! After Hank informs us of ways to protect ourselves, we will have time to ask questions and share stories/advice in the discussion portion of the program. A $10.00 sandwich lunch is offered by the church, but you are welcome to bring your own lunch. Drinks will be provided. Call the church office by Wednesday, July 29th or KJohnson@ fumclr.org for reservations and note if lunch is requested. Crystal Bridges August Trip Alert! Third Agers will hit the road again with an August excursion to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art! We will leave at 9 am Thursday morning August 13 and return Friday the 14th before supper. The timing of this trip enables us to tour both the special exhibit of art works by Jamie Wyeth and Warhol s Nature collection on loan from the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Though Crystal Bridges itself has no general admission fee, the exhibit package is $8.00 per person. The package fee of $45.00 per person includes lunch the first day while traveling, plus funds to help cover fuel and maintenance of the vans. Individuals will pay for their other meals. The group rate for rooms with two double beds at the La Quinta Inn very close to the Museum in Bentonville applies till August 1st, at a very reasonable of $ including tax and complimentary breakfast. KIDS@FIRST Bible Boot Camp Please Register by August 16th to allow time for camp preparation to be completed. This fun mini-camp will run August from Friday 5 pm-saturday 4 pm. Entering third and fourth graders learn to use their Bibles during an overnight camping experience at Camp Tanako in Hot Springs. Scholarships available if needed.
