April 1 Is Little Rock a Hot Spot? Alan Simms, Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau Holy Hilarity - Sunday, April 12th from 3-5 pm on Center Street Someone once said, God has a sense of humor. God has the last laugh and the last word. That word is Resurrection in Jesus Christ! He is risen! The joke is on human reason and rigidity! Rejoice! Historically, Holy Humor began as Bright Monday in the ancient Greek orthodox tradition. It was set aside as a day of joy and laughter at Christ s triumph over death. Join us on Center street from 3-5 pm as we celebrate Holy Hilarity! We ll have a dunking booth, perhaps some piethrowing, cake walk, games and more! Please bring all your friends and family - this is a great event to share the warmth of First Church with others! You are invited to the United Methodist Women s General Meeting and Lunch Sun, April 12th at 12:15, Fellowship Hall Our speaker is Brian Itzkowitz, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Arkansas. Goodwill was founded by a Methodist Minister in Boston in Goodwill Industries is much more than a thrift store or a place to drop off unwanted items. Since 1927 Goodwill Industries of Arkansas has helped thousands of individuals with disabilities and other barriers onto a path toward reclaiming their independence through the power of work. They have done this by operating stores that provide jobs and training within the retail environment and by channeling a majority of the revenues into job creation, employment training and placement programs. You will not want to miss hearing about all that is being done by Goodwill Industries of Arkansas. Everyone is welcome - men included. Call the church office at to make a reservation for lunch so enough food will be prepared. Church Directories - Available Now! Directories are now available! A minimum donation of $15 is appreciated. Donations above and beyond $15 will go towards the purchase of additional directories for New Members and Guests --so anything extra will be GREATLY appreciated! If you would like to reserve a copy, you may send in your donation to the church office - ATTENTION: LESLEY ANDREWS.

3 NEWS & EVENTS Mark Your Calendars! Hendrix College President Dr. William M. Tsutsui s County to County BBQ Tour First United Methodist Church of Little Rock Sunday, April 26th after First Tradition To make your reservation, please call (877) or RSVP@hendrix.edu by Tuesday, April 21. Starts April 26th! Faith and Film Small Group It is said that the Eyes are a window to the soul. Yet, there are many ways to take a peak inside the inner sanctuary of our hearts and souls through the various activities of our everyday lives and culture. Spirituality is seeing the sacred connections all around us. It is noticing the Holy in all things and developing awareness that the line between the sacred and the secular is wider than we imagine. One of these ways is through movies. Movies point to our deepest longings and struggles and invite us to consider the role of the arts in our spiritual lives. First Church is pleased to offer a new special interest group, Faith and Film. Faith and Film s intent is to have discussion of our formal and personal faith journeys as we do, or do not, encounter them in contemporary movies. It is offered to anyone who wishes to explore their faith in a nonthreatening way by responding to how the medium of film speaks to us about everyday issues. We will be invited to explore themes and how they connect with our faith and life the light and dark, the joys and sorrows, the conflicts and celebrations. Watching movies together invites us into conversation. Faith and Film will be a monthly movie and popcorn night that features a different film each month. Each movie will be followed by discussion so participants can unpack the movie s insight together. We will view different types of films and the way in which the Christian message can be seen in them. Our first gathering will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. We will begin with the movie, Signs. Childcare will be provided. For more information, please contact Rev. Mary Jane Cole at or mjcole@arumc.org MISSION & OUTREACH Faith Promise, Lenten Hunger Offering Arkansas now ranks 10th in the percentage of eligible children who are getting school breakfast. The No Kid Hungry team, led by Patty Barker, works hard to make sure all children, regardless of the economic status of their families, get the nutrition they need to learn. We know that kids who get the proper nutrition have a better opportunity to succeed in school. As Department of Agriculture Tom Vilsak said this week, Good nutrition is just as important to a child s future as education. The Hunger Relief Alliance and our many partners are working to make that a reality for all. Kathy Webb Communion Sunday, April 5th Easter, one of our greatest Christian celebrations, will soon be here. I am making a special appeal because we will not be receiving Communion on Easter Sunday at the First Tradition Service. Instead Communion will be served at the Maundy Thursday service. And then at the First Light service and again at 10 am in the Chapel on Easter Sunday morning. It is then that you will have an opportunity to make your financial contribution to the Assistance fund. As the weather warms, the number of folks coming for assistance increases. Please give as you are able so that we can continue to serve those who come to us. Thank you. Anthony Falkowski, Director of Mission & Outreach We Need Lift Drivers! I have a favorite day of the month; I mark it boldly on my calendar and wake up excited when that day comes. It s not the day I get my manicures or gameday, although I love those too, it is the day I drive for LIFT. You can do it too! LIFT is our program designed to help those with no other viable means of transportation get to medically recommended appointments, free of charge. Our wonderful volunteers get to spend one day a month driving and ministering to our clients in a unique way, but what I have found is that they more often minister to us. The wonderful people we get to spend our time with have become friends I look forward to seeing and catching up with on the way to and from appointments. Even when I am having a rough morning, the feeling I get when I m able to help such wonderful people leaves me feeling unbelievable! Now our program is in need of more volunteers to experience this wonderfully unique way of helping a part of our community that is often forgotten. We re needing subs as well as regular drivers. If you think this is something you or a friend may be interested in, please don t hesitate to ask for more information! You can reach me, Kim Marsh, at Marshfamilly85@gmail.com or You may also contact Anthony Falkowski at afalkowski@fumclr.org or

7 FRIENDS & FAMILY Congratulations on Baptism Congratulations to Bridget and Kevin Kresse on the baptism of their son, Roman, on Sunday, March 15th during First Tradition. Roman has been very active in our children s music program. STEWARDSHIP Nine New Etched Leaves Added to The Promise Tree The Promise Tree is growing new leaves this spring, just as trees around town are beginning to sprout new leaves. Recently nine more etched leaves were added to The Promise Tree in the second floor administrative hallway, and one of them has the name of the late Denny Gainer etched upon it. Denny, named Denzil, was born in El Dorado. He spent his career as a pharmacist and pharmaceutical representative. After retirement from the UAMS Medical Center Pharmacy, he spent his time in service to his parents and to our church, until his death Sunday April 29, He was particularly devoted to the music ministry of the church and made many close friends who still mourn his passing. The church learned later that Denny had left an undesignated bequest to the church. Because of that, his name is posthumously added to the list of members of The First Promise Bequest Society. For more information on how you can remember the church in your will, contact Pat Lile, Director of Planned Giving, or lilepm@sbcglobal.net.
