3 THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 22, 2017 From the Desk of Fr. Ron For many years our young attend school, in doing so prepare themselves to meet the challenges of life as an adult. For many their journey will take them to, career preparation. However, after all these years of school, there comes a time when they must leave the nest of preparation and launch into their professional lives. These steps, while filled with excitement are also filled with anxiety. Questions arise: Am I properly prepared?, Will I be successful?, and Why do I have to start at the bottom of the seniority ladder again? Last weekend, we heard from the Gospel of John. John the Baptizer gave testimony about Jesus that He is the; Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, John 1:29. We know in the Gospel of John, the first sign that Jesus performs is at the wedding feast at Cana, where He declares to His mother: Woman., My hour has not yet come, John 2:4. This weekend we turn our attention to the Gospel of Matthew, our feature Gospel for the whole year, and Jesus received some disturbing news. John the Baptizer has been arrested and imprisoned. This news causes Him to withdraw. He withdraws to a location that is accustomed to heartbreak and misery, the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. These were the two towns first overthrown by the Assyrians in their siege; accustomed to the darkness of governmental occupation, taxation, and unjust treatment. It is in this location containing people most in need of hope and in these moments of question about His Hour, that He takes up John the Baptizer s theme and continues to preach: Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, Matthew 4:17. Most Catholics sit in Church pews each and every weekend praying, worshiping God, being fortified and strengthened, but never launch into a ministry or service opportunity to build up the Body of Christ. Like professional students, many prefer the nest of security rather than the profession of Evangelist. Our Baptism calls each and every one of us to a unique role to play in the Body of Christ. That role can change from time to time, but no one else can do your part. Carpe Diem! Let us follow in the footsteps of our Savior Jesus and Seize the Day; begin our unique ministry in order to continue the ministry of Jesus our Lord. NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY CHURCH PARISH COUNCIL MEETING AGENDA MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2017, 7-9PM, MSGR. PAA CENTER 1. Father Ron 2. Review and adoption of specific goals 3. PASTORAL ASSOCIATE NEWS BY AMY VOSSEN VUKELIC Parish Inreach: Calling All NBVM Ministries! Our parish mission statement calls for both in-reach (ministries that serve people in our parish), and out-reach (ministries that serve other organizations or needs). In addition to providing a monthly dinner for men who are re -entering society after serving in prison, in we will also offer the Thursday Morning Focus at 7:1AM. Consider a donation of Gift Cards to TOPS or Wegmans, to help offset the cost of meals. We also plan to take two dozen Paula s Donuts every week, too. One of our parish ministries, Family Promise of WNY, helps families who experience homelessness by providing shelter, meals, case management, and guidance along the road to independence. 4 THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 22, 2017 Values for Life Annual Appeal: Nativity of Mary School s slogan is Values for Life: Founded in Faith, United in Family, Joined in Service, Enriched in Wisdom and Celebrated in Success. Daily, our school teachers and staff uphold these values. This is something of which we as a parish can be extremely proud. We believe that at Nativity, we provide an education that will take our children into an exciting future, as well as values to strengthen them throughout their lives. The STREAM program, beginning this January, cultivates each academic area in an increasingly technological age, while taking into account the total person, through inclusion of religion and the arts. We nurture a student s mind, but also a student s spirit. Catholic School parents pay tuition to cover about 60% of the school s costs to educate our more than 200 K-8 students. Fundraising is a constant activity for the parents who volunteer for, and support, the activities of the HSA. But as a parish, it is also our responsibility to aid and support our school. The school belongs to us, and the mission of educating children in the Catholic tradition is a long-standing part of our history as Catholics As you plan your charitable giving, please consider dedicating a portion of your contributions to the mission of our Catholic school, by supporting the Values for Life Annual Appeal. Values for Life envelopes are available at the entrances to the church. Or you can simply send a check to Nativity of Mary School, 8550 Main Street, Williamsville, NY 14221, Attn.: VFL Campaign. God bless you for your support! Education for the future Values for Life!
