3 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 20, 2017 From the Desk of Fr. Ron, In the history of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Buffalo, the first building to be erected by a new parish community would have been a school, then a convent, rectory and lastly a Church building. For many years, the Church and School shared the same building. Providing Catholic Education for our youth was a priority. Almost every parish had a school. They were called parochial schools, because they provided the Catholic Education ministry within the borders of an individual parish and majorly to Catholics. When Jesus began His ministry, he proclaimed I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, (Matthew 15:24). After all, in a parochial way of thinking, it was the people of Israel who were awaiting the Messiah, the Christ or Anointed of God. Yet, others from the Greek world were also listening to His message, believing in His special ministry and asking to be included. The early post Pentecost Church, experienced this to a great extent, as many gentiles were believing in the Lord Jesus and receiving the same Spirit as the Jewish converts. This also was seen to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah, And foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him.. them I will bring to my holy mountain. for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples, (Isaiah 56:6-7). In the ministry of Catholic Education today, we have moved away from our parochial way of thinking in regard to a parish school. We have widened the ministry to include all who wish to attend, creating a community school. Today, Catholic Education is seen as an essential ministry in forming our youth, not only in the understanding and speaking the language of the faith, but forming them in the values of the Kingdom of God to be influential leaders in our society. May our schools, as well as our parish communities, be places of welcome to our community so that together we may ascend to the holy mountain of the Lord. EVENTS IN OUR SISTER PARISHES ST. LAWRENCE RECTORY, AUGUST 17th will welcome the Most Reverend John Baptist Kaggwa, Bishop of Masaka, Uganda, East Africa. This is Bishop Kaggwa s first visit to Buffalo. The Diocese of Masaka and ROTA: Reaching Out 2 Africa have been partners in mission ministry over the years. Bishop Kaggwa will be conducting a Mission Cooperative Appeal at St. Gregory Parish over the August 27 th weekend. It is our hope that our three parishes will have an opportunity to visit with and meet our special guest during the time he will be with us. ST. MARTIN DE PORRES ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC will take place on Sunday, August 27 th beginning with a special 12Noon Outdoor Mass at Como Park Casino Shelter. Shared food, music, and fun will be the agenda for the day together. Bring some food items to share. Hot dogs and Hamburgers provided. Sister Parishes most welcome. Special Note: Due to the Como Park Special Mass at 12Noon, there will be no 9:30AM Mass at St. Martins Church on that Sunday, August 27 th. Let's come together and pray for our family, for our community, for one another, especially the sick, those in hospitals, those with cancer, the homebound, those going for surgery, those with special intentions, the travelers, etc. This Mass is for anyone seeking "physical, spiritual healing." Everyone is welcomed and will be prayed for. I am glad to offer this Mass. As you come, may you be blessed. Sheen Movies: The 13th Day, & The Day the Sun Danced Fatima Facts: While the children were imprisoned in Ourem, a great crowd of about 5,000 people had gathered in the Cova da Iria on August 13, When the children did not appear as expected, many left disappointed but witnesses who stayed testified that they seemed to sense some of the signs that were present when Our Lady had last appeared - visible dimming of the sun s light, a flash of lightening, peals of thunder, a mist that enveloped the holm oak. Six days later, four days after of being released and returned home, Lucia, Francisco and his brother John were grazing their flocks near a little place called Valinhos. Around four in the afternoon, Lucia sensed that Our Lady was about to appear. Jacinta was not with them. Lucia asked John to run home and get her. The moment Jacinta arrived, our Lady appeared standing upon a holm oak tree. It was to be the only apparition that did not take place in the Cova da Iria. Lucia asked her usual question, What do you want of me? and Our Lady responded as she usually did: I want you to continue going to the Cova da Iria on the 13 th, and to continue praying the Rosary every day.
