1 Redeemer Good News November 2016 REDEEMER November 2016 Pastor Steve Ferber PRAYER OVER DESPAIR Most church signs are quickly forgotten; not this one. For the past few weeks Redeemer s lawn sign, like some other churches around the country, has posted what many Christians have been thinking: Have the donkey and elephant let you down? Turn to the Lamb! By the time you read this article, the election may be over. Many Americans believe that whoever wins the presidency will be a disappointment. November 9th, the day after the election, will be a day millions wake up in a state I : Redeemer Lutheran School... 2 Veterans Day Celebration Reservation Form... 3 Music & Worship Notes... 4 Lessons & Carols Choir Registration.. 5 Redeemer Worship Events... 6 Outreach Events for Advent... 6 Compassion Circle s Christmas Cookie Pack... 6 Lutheran Women s Missionary League (LWML)... 7 Last Chance for Picture Directory... 8 Advent by Candlelight... 8 Scrip... 9 Service Opportunity... 9 Welcome New Members... 9 School Rebranding What s New November Calendar Thrivent Builds/Habitat Fundraiser. 12 Thanksgiving Worship Redeemer Lutheran Church & School in Wayzata, MN. Sharing the Changeless Christ in a Changing World! of despair over the future of our nation. That would be a mistake. The leader of our nation is not in the White House, or at the Capitol. The One with ultimate authority and power does not reside in a building or hold any office. Governments cannot protect their citizens or cause the economy to prosper. This is one of the great truths of God s word. When the Israelites were on the verge of entering the Promised Land, God warned them not to forget the source of their blessings: In the wilderness He fed you with manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end. Otherwise, you may say in your heart, My power REVEREND. and the strength of my hand made me this wealth. But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to make wealth (Deuteronomy 8:16-18) REFLECTIONS Every blessing we enjoy as a nation, and as individuals, has one source: Almighty God, who through His Son, Jesus Christ, gives us everything we have: He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? (Romans 8:32). That greatest of all truths, salvation and provision through (Reflections continued on page 8)

7 Redeemer Good News November LUTHERAN WOMEN S MISSIONARY LEAGUE NEWS Twice a year, April and October, LWML groups in the Lake Minnetonka Zone come together for a time of fellowship, Mission Inspiration, Bible study and service. Recently we met at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Excelsior under the theme: "Pass the baton of Faith and Patriotism." Guest speaker for the day was Rev. Howie Krienke. Special guests were Veterans from our congregations. Service project for the day was the tying of quilted lap robes and making thank you cards to accompany the lap robes to be given to the Veterans at the V.A. Hospital by Fort Snelling. After lunch, each of the twenty-five veterans in attendance received a lap robe and thank you in appreciation for their service to our country. Our next ZONE gathering will be April 22, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hopkins. Joel Landskroer, Mayer Lutheran High, will lead us in Bible study, "Building for the Kingdom." Stay tuned for more information. Redeemer LWML will meet for Bible study (from the Women's quarterly) on Tuesday, NOVEMBER 8TH AT 10:00 A.M. in the Conference room. Keep filling those Mite boxes! Thank you.

We are planning an exciting evening of music and fellowship. This is our yearly event for women to prepare for the Christmas season. Sign up sheets for hostesses and guests will ADVENT BY CANDLELIGHT SAVE THE DATE December 4, 2016, 5:00-7:00 pm (Reflections continued from page 1) Jesus Christ, inspires us to live with confidence, regardless of any election or any action of any human being. Our confidence comes from and rests in Jesus. November 9 th will come and go; on that day, as every day, God s true people of faith will be recognized, not by despair, or cynicism, or anger, but by prayer. After all, we know the Source of all blessing. We respond as God has taught us: in prayer, for our nation, our families, and the world: If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14). Prayer or despair? I choose prayer. How about you? In Christ, soon be available in the lobby. Each table has room for eight people, including the hostess. It is a perfect opportunity to invite family or special friends. PLEASE CONSIDER BEING A HOSTESS THIS YEAR. We welcome all women and girls 13 years and older. Questions? Call Mary

10 10 Redeemer Good News November 2016 SCHOOL REBRANDING UPDATE Thank you to all who attended the Special Voters Meeting on October 18th. School Board representative Kai Kroll presented the research, background, and reasoning behind changing the name of our school from Redeemer Lutheran School to Redeemer Christian Academy. Our ultimate goal is to attract the attention of more potential families and students by creating a cohesive and consistent marketing and communications program, which showcases both our excellence in education and our focus on equipping students to be disciples of Jesus. Following the presentation, Pastor Steve spoke in favor of the name change and a few questions were answered. The following resolution was presented, voted on, and passed: WHEREAS, Redeemer Lutheran Church formed Redeemer Lutheran School in 1978; and WHEREAS, The school is a faithbased, Christian school where the Christian faith is taught daily in classrooms and is integrated into all areas of learning and schoolsponsored activities; and WHEREAS, The mission is to equip students for their journey on the road through this life to eternal life with God and the Teachings for a Lifetime help students grow in learning, integrity, faith, and excellence to become equipped disciples of Jesus; and WHEREAS, Kindergarten through eighth grade enrollment has declined from over two hundred to about seventy-five; and WHEREAS, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod schools have been closing at a rate of nearly one per year in the Minnesota South District; and WHEREAS, Redeemer School and its mission are at risk due to lower enrollment; and WHEREAS, Several Lutheran Church Missouri Synod schools have renamed their schools and seen enrollment increase dramatically; and WHEREAS, The Redeemer Day School Board, MMLG, and teaching staff after prayerful consideration and due diligence recommend that the school be renamed; therefore be it RESOLVED, That Redeemer Lutheran School be renamed Redeemer Christian Academy; and be it further RESOLVED, That there be no change to the current LCMS teaching, staff hiring preferences, message, curriculum or mission; and be it further RESOLVED, That the name change be effective by March 31, 2017; and be it further RESOLVED, That community outreach and launch promotions take place and school signage, banners, website, and promotional materials be updated by March 31, This rebranding effort will also be a good opportunity to enhance our day school signage, and update our outdated marketing materials and website, most of which have been in the works and budgeted for. There is a display in the school lobby with many of the slides from the rebranding presentation. Please reach out if you are interested in helping with this effort, and let us know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you to the church congregation for your support and encouragement of the mission of our day school. Please continue to pray with us for wisdom as we move forward with this exciting plan, and for the Lord's continued blessing of our day school. Many children and families are currently being taught about the love of Jesus in our school, and with this name change and rebranding, we pray that many more will find our school. Blessings, Keri Rouen, Day School Board Chair Have you noticed a new sidewalk in front of the main church entrance? It replaced a deteriorating, unsafe one. Tree and shrub trimming was also accomplished to beautify Redeemer's grounds. Thank you to the Solstad and Fasching families for funding these projects.
