3 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Father Eduino has asked that the following excerpts be included in the 21st and 28th bulletins to ensure that all parishioners have the opportunity to read it. The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation From Chapter IV: 183 Consequently, no one can demand that religion should be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life, without influence on the societal and national life, without concern for the soundness of civil institutions, without a right to offer an opinion on events affecting society. Who would claim to lock up in a church and silence the message of St. Francis of Assisi or Blessed Teresa of Calcutta? They themselves would have found this unacceptable. An authentic faith-which is never comfortable or completely personal-always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it. We love this magnificent planet on which God has put us, and we love the human family that dwells here, with all its tragedies and struggles, its hopes and aspirations, its strengths and weaknesses. The earth is our common home and all of us are brothers and sisters. If indeed the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics," the Church "cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice." All Christians, their pastors included, are called to show concern for the building of a better world. Pope Francis, Address to the Kenyan bishops, April 16, 2015 The Church must insist, especially to those who are in positions of leadership and power, on those moral principles which promote the common good and the up-building of society as a whole. In the fulfillment of her apostolic mission, the Church must take a prophetic stand in defense of the poor and against all corruption and abuse of power. She must do so, in the first place, by example. Do not be afraid to be a prophetic voice! Do not be afraid to preach with conviction! Bring the wisdom of the Church, enshrined particularly in her social teaching, to bear - Fr. Eduino Silveira Jesus, Our Life, Who Conquers Death Today s First Reading is from the Book of Wisdom, from which we receive many of life s jewels of wisdom. How can a God so good allow suffering and death? Well, He doesn t, they are the result of sin. When we sin, we choose death over life, so the consequences are pain and suffering. We were made for life, so when we decide against it, we face it s opposite. The Responsorial, Psalm 30, is a hymn of praise to God; first for His gift of life to His beloved creation. God protected us from eternal death. The second praise of God is for His short-lived anger toward His creation. Actually, it is more accurate to say that God becomes angry for us, at the poison of sin that destroys life and love in His creation. His ultimate purpose is to bring us joy and life to the full. In the Second Reading, St Paul advises us to imitate Jesus (who though God became man for our sake) and share our excess with those who don t have enough. Today s Gospel is from St Mark. From the end of Chapter 4 through the end of Chapter 5, he presents three types of miracles. One is of nature, where Jesus calms the stormy sea (end of Chp 4). Then the account of the great exorcism of the man possessed by many demons, Legion, at the beginning of Chapter (5). Finally, today, at the end of Chapter 5 is the healing. Actually, there are two healings, one smaller one, the woman with the hemorrhage; the larger is the raising of Jairus daughter from the dead. St Mark puts these two miracles of healing together to show us Jesus omnipotence. Jairus approaches Jesus to ask Him the favor of intervening to heal his dying daughter. In the face of a messenger s report that Jairus girl has died, Jesus advises the girl s father not to be afraid, but just have faith. In both cases, the woman with the hemorrhage and the father of the dying girl, faith in Jesus is the keystone. May our faith in Jesus always be so strong.
4 STEWARDSHIP AT OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION FINANCIAL SUPPORT Offertory Collection Results for June 20th & 21st, 2015 will be reported in next week s bulletin due to early content submission. as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality. - 2 CORINTHIANS 8:14 Not only are we responsible for our own lives, but we are responsible for the lives of those around us. Not only is it important that we grow, nurture and share our gifts, but we should teach our children this same lesson and encourage Peter s Pence Collection In the second collection today, we are supporting Pope Francis in his charitable works.
