FAMILY PROMISE MINISTRY The Mission of Our Lady of the Assumption Church is to proclaim the Word of God more fully, to gain a more intimate knowledge of God through our Catholic traditions, and serve the people of God, especially in our efforts to meet the needs of the poor in our community and, when possible, around the world. We strive to build a sense of community among our parishioners, with the wider Diocesan community, and with the entire family of God. The Family Promise Ministry follows this mission by working in conjunction with 25 other churches, in the Sacramento area, in an interfaith effort to provide food and shelter for the homeless families with children and to help them find stable housing and employment. Type of Parishioners wanted This ministry appeals to a diverse group of parishioners those who like to prepare and/or serve dinner for the current families of Family Promise and, those who enjoy the Day Center, answering phone calls and completing In- Takes of those homeless who call looking for housing. Even very busy parishioners can participate in this ministry because it s up to each individual how much time they choose to spend either preparing and serving a meal or helping at the Day Center. Day Center volunteers receive a monthly schedule and may volunteer to fill in where needed or work a regular shift. Each allows fellowship with the families and opportunities to play or teach their children. What our group does OLA volunteers provide dinners at local churches who host the families overnight. Other volunteers help out at the Day Center, where a Case Worker and Director help the families make a plan and accomplish their goals. There are also opportunities to help with estate sales, and in the gently-used fine furniture warehouse which helps support this program. When and where we meet Most communication with our group is by , For example, a Co-Coordinator s when help is needed with a meal, and people volunteer to bring something. Meal planning is done online. We meet at the host church to serve the meal and visit with the guests.
4 UPLIFTING REFLECTIONS FROM PASTOR S DESK FEAR NOT In today s Gospel Jesus tells His disciples to not fear but to trust I God s love. He says that nothing happens without God knowledge. This is a constant preoccupation of Jesus Christ that we be not afraid trust in the Goodness of God Who takes care of the birds of the air and gives food to all living things. That does not mean that we are free from crosses and even some fears including being victims of hostility like Jesus Himself experienced. But they do not have the last word. God does. Let us place all our hope in God. Living the Virtues in Everyday Life Loyola Press Ministry Leading a virtuous life sounds like something that is just for the superreligious people out there. But it is really something each one of us can aim for. God gives us the awesome gifts of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. Plus there are a ton of other virtues that we can develop on our own. For example, there are the virtues of temperance, prudence, courage, and justice. These virtues came from classic Western philosophy (think Plato and Aristotle) and were repackaged by Church heavyweights such as Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas so that they connected with the Christian faith. These four virtues are known as the cardinal virtues because they are critical to forming our moral values and guiding our behavior. In addition to the cardinal virtues, there are many other virtues that we can develop. Check out Isaiah 11:2 and Galatians 5:22-23 for more. You ll find many places on the Internet that list virtues that are recognized in different cultures. Wikipedia s entry on "virtue" lists 100 virtues that are commonly recognized in Western culture. Once you ve had a chance to look at all the different virtues out there, you begin to see that there is quite a range to choose from. Did you know that good humor is a virtue? Imagination and curiosity are also virtues. All of a sudden, leading a virtuous life might not seem half bad. Who wouldn t want to be creative, happy, courageous, trustworthy, or focused? We might not label these things as virtues or make them top priority, but the fact is, most of us live the virtues every day. Even something as small as being tactful or friendly is virtuous. The upshot is that leading a virtuous life is not just for the superreligious (if there even is such a thing). It s for you and me and for all people who want to be true to themselves. Living the virtues helps us be real and go after our dreams. Living the virtues helps us be more aware of the people around us and help them when we can. Living the virtues helps us see the beauty in the world, especially in nature, and moves us to care for these as the precious gifts they are. Living the virtues helps us get more in tune with God. Spend some time looking over the virtues, especially the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. Read Chapter 13 of Saint Paul s letter to the Corinthians in which he talks about what love means in our lives. Think about the virtues that you are already living in your life and what you d like to develop. Above all, practice random acts of virtue whenever you have the chance!
