3 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Following Jesus And Living The Good News Of God's Love Today's Gospel reading is from the beginning of St. Mark's Gospel, the first and shortest of the Gospels, written to proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God Who came to proclaim the Kingdom of God. The passage for today comes from the beginning of Jesus' ministry when He appeared in Galilee proclaiming that the Kingdom of God was near and calling on people to repent and believe the Good News. This is the center of Jesus' message, the call to conversion, to a change of life, to live for the Kingdom of God. He so loved the world that He sent His only Son to save us from a futile way of life to a life full of love. Jesus calls us to reject sin, all that is contrary to love and to follow Him, to live by faith in God's love for us with our hearts directed to God's Kingdom. This is the call He gave to the first disciples to whom He promised to make fishers of men. As they followed the Lord and as they received the Holy Spirit they became full of love and spent their lives proclaiming the Good News of Salvation and building God's Kingdom. St Paul also calls us to set our hearts on the eternal Kingdom of God as he reminds us that things are passing away. He is reminding us of the great call that Jesus came to give us of eternal life in the kingdom of God. The people of Nineveh, in the first reading found out too that God is a merciful, saving God. As they believed the prophet and repented they were saved. In these readings we see, once again, that Our God is a Merciful God, a God of Salvation Who desires to save His people. Anyone who repents and trusts in Him is Saved. He desires that we trust Him and live in His love. As we celebrate Catholic Schools week, we at Our Lady of Assumption are so grateful that our school does a great job of passing our faith to our children and forming them as disciples of the Lord. Besides providing a great academic program recognized by many, our teachers, staff, administrators and advisors take great pride in sharing and living our faith. I am amazed with the great level of care that the school staff takes in preparing not only our school liturgies but also para liturgical services such as prayer events and plays. I encourage all our parishioners to support our school, and I thank all our parents for trusting us with the education and faith formation of their children. - Fr. Ediuno Silveira Called to Conversion In the First Reading, we again see how the people who believed in God respond to His call. Jonah, the prophet, was sent by God to the large pagan city of Nineveh, to warn of impending destruction. The people respond with a call to repentance, even the king decrees a fast for all in the city, reasoning that God might relent and forgive them their sins (which is exactly what happens). As in every Mass, today we are called to examine our lives and turn from our sinful ways so that we too can respond to God s call. The Responsorial is a beseeching of the Lord to instruct us in His ways, to reveal His paths to us so that we can do what is pleasing in His sight, for human effort alone will fail. We experience God s compassion, not only in His forgiveness, but also in His teaching us how to avoid sin, which hurts us. God does not leave us orphan, but treats us as His children guiding and instructing us in His ways of goodness, humility and justice. The Second Reading is a reminder of the ephemeral, transitory nature of the world and worldly things. It calls us to keep this life and worldly concerns in perspective. We can do so if we view all things in light of eternity. Today s Gospel recounts the call of the first Apostles: Peter, Andrew, James and John. Both sets of brothers, (Peter and Andrew), (James and John), were fishermen, and here Jesus calls them to proclaim the Word. The Good News is that Jesus is the personification of God s Kingdom and the dawning of a new era. These first Apostles left all and followed Jesus wherever He went. Being His followers means that our Christian calling permeates how we live; and all else: work, possessions, status, etc. are secondary to that call.

4 STEWARDSHIP AT OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION FINANCIAL SUPPORT Offertory Collection Results for January 17th & 18th, 2015: $9, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. Mark 1:17 Jesus call to Follow me is a call to all Christians! Jesus asks us to help Him build his church on earth by generously sharing all our gifts of prayer, talent and treasure. Remember, Jesus calls us to generously develop and share all our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. Annual Catholic Appeal The Annual Catholic Appeal is our annual tradition that connects us to thousands of people who need our help every day. This year, our Appeal Weekend takes place two weeks from now on the weekend of February 7th & 8th. Last year, through your generosity, our parish contributed $81, to the Appeal. Our 25% parish share was split between the St. Vincent de Paul Society and tuition assistance for our school s families who needed a little extra help. This year funds from the Annual Catholic Appeal will be used be split between those two needs as well as the creation of a Social Justice fund allowing the parish to help the poor directly. Through our support, we can assure that many vital social service programs continue to assist tens of thousands of people in need, assist with the formation of diocesan seminarians, and provide need-based tuition assistance to deserving families in our most economically-challenged communities. Your gift makes a difference in someone s life. Please prayerfully consider what you can give. Christian Meditation Group In an age of rush and noise, it is essential that we find time to be still and quiet. Be still and know that I am God, says the Psalmist. In this prayer of silence called Christian Meditation we find God who dwells in our own heart. And, in finding Him, we find our own selves and thus, are renewed. A Christian Mediation Group regularly meets Mondays at 7:30pm in our School Library. Please call Fran at to learn more about this program.
