3 REFLECTIONS & JOYFUL OPPORTUNITIES Alleluia, Love Wins by Fr. Eduino Silveira Today we rejoice in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This day was made by the Lord and we rejoice in it. Jesus Who humbled Himself by becoming Man gave His Body on the Cross as the weapon to destroy sin and death. As God, He could not suffer and die, but out of love and pity for us He gave His life for our Salvation. His love triumphed. He has all power and is a life giving Spirit giving life eternal to all who approach Him. He is a merciful Savior Who sympathizes with our weaknesses. By His glorious victory He gives us His Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with the Love of God. Let us rejoice and be glad and approach with confidence the throne of grace. Alleluia He is Risen! by Dean Marshall, OLA Seminarian Everything is put into perspective on Easter morning: the prayer, fasting, and almsgiving of Lent, which led us to the passion and death of Jesus Christ, now brings us to His glorious resurrection, when we exclaim with all our hearts, Alleluia, He is risen! Over the last forty days perhaps the struggle has been difficult but fruitful, or maybe you look back and wish that you had tried harder to enter the penitential season. Maybe you are in between these two, as I suspect many of us may find ourselves to be. No matter where you find yourself, everything you have experienced during Lent is now brought into sharp focus on Easter. What does Jesus resurrection mean for us? Sure, we know that it is a historical fact, but what does it mean for us personally, and what effect does it have on our lives? If we stay focused on God, as the season of Lent helped us to do, or rather rediscover, His resurrection should have the most significant impact on our lives compared to anything else we may encounter. This man God raised on the third day has shown us through the resurrection that triumph over sin and death is possible; we simply need to trust in Him. If we believe in Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness of sins through His name. Through His resurrection, we see that all the claims and prophecies about Him are true, and we are left with one choice: to see and to believe. Seeing and believing, however, carry with it great responsibility. If we know the resurrection to be true, which also means we accept His sacrifice and death for our sins, then we have a responsibility to proclaim this to the whole world. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God. On this glorious Easter morning, let us go forth from this place and proclaim in our words and actions Jesus Christ, who suffered, died, and rose for all of us so that we might be with Him forever. For reflection: Am I comfortable preaching about Jesus Christ in my words and actions? How can I better preach His message in my own life and to those around me? PERT Club The PERT Club will once again meet for us retired folk on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at 11:00am, in St. John s Hall, OLA. There will be a short meeting to cover a bit of business, a LOTTO drawing, and door prizes, followed by the mouthwatering potluck luncheon at Noon. Bring your own utensils, wine glass, coffee cup and some cheerful decorations for your table to celebrate Easter. Ten games of BINGO, with cash prizes, will follow lunch promptly when the kitchen crew is finished. Would the Kitchen Crew please arrive at 9:30am for setup? Please call Dave at , or George at , if you have any questions. Family Promise Needs Your Assistance! Family Promise is looking for a new location for their Day Center. They need approximately 2,000 square feet, $2500/ month, near a light rail station. A building with a yard for children in which to play would be great. (I already have a promised donated swing set). It has to have a permit to work with homeless families and have parking for 4 cars. If you, or anyone you, know have such a place, please contact Marsha Spell, Director of Family Promise, or Maggie Schlesinger, OLA parishioner, at Have you just bought new towels and want to find a home for your old ones? The Family Promise Day Center is in dire need of them. They presently have four families and could really use bath towels and wash cloths. Please call Maggie Schlesinger, , to arrange for pick up or drop off. Thank you. OLA Young Adults Group (College Age) - Second and Fourth Fridays Meetings are held in Seton Hall from 7:00-8:30pm. Contact Johann at or youth@olaparish.net.

5 OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE YOUR FAITH St. Vincent DePaul Guidelines for Assistance Do you know anyone living within OLA s church boundaries that needs food or financial assistance? They may be eligible for help from OLA s SVDP Conference. Here are our guidelines for assistance: Those needing food should come to our food locker on Tuesdays or Thursday mornings from 9:00am to 10:50 am. The locker is located off the Walnut Avenue parking lot to the right of the school and behind the fence. For questions call Vocations Cross Prayer Campaign OLA has a Vocations Cross Prayer Campaign. Each week, a family will take home the Vocations Cross. During their week, they commit to praying for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life, as well as for our priests, seminarians, and religious in the Diocese of Sacramento. The cross will then be returned to the parish the following Friday, and presented to a new family at the Mass they normally attend. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dean at or seminarian@olaparish.net. Food Locker clients receive enough food for three meals for three days for every person in the household. Clients may return every fourteen days. Those coming for the first time should bring proper identification and proof of address for every person in the household. Individuals needing financial assistance should call over the SVDP office Monday through Friday mornings (except holidays). For those who qualify, funds are available for rent, utilities, clothing, and other emergency needs. Our OLA/St. Vincent de Paul Conference serves anyone who lives within our parish geographic boundaries. Generally, the northern boundary for our parish is Marconi Avenue, the eastern and southern boundaries are the American River and the western boundary is Eastern Avenue. If you know someone living in those areas who may need the type of help described above, please have them contact us. Summer School Registration is open for St. John the Evangelist Summer School! Students preschool through 8th grade are invited to attend. We welcome students from all schools in our area. Registration information is available at under the Summer School 2017 tab.
6 STEWARDSHIP & ENLIGHTENMENT OPPORTUNITIES Thank you for your generosity on April 8th & 9th Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. COLOSSIANS 3:2 Do you put God first in all things? Possessions, money, power, ego can easily become gods to many of us. Do a quick check of what is important to you. Is God at the very top of the list? If not, your priorities need to be readjusted. Don t let earthly things become a god before God. Estate Planning A legacy gift to Our Lady of the Assumption is one of the most rewarding and far-reaching investments you can make. Our Lady of the Assumption takes the trust you place in us seriously and has used previous gifts to support the educational needs of our students, the liturgical and basic necessities of those helped by our charity partners locally, as well as investing in the future of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. We are grateful to those who have included us in their plan for the distribution of their assets after death. We pray that you will keep Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and/or School in mind. We invite you to contact the Parish Office if you wish to learn more about how you can include us in your estate planning.
