MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the parish community at Our Lady of the Assumption Church is to proclaim the Word of God more fully, to gain a more intimate knowledge of God through our Catholic traditions, and to serve the people of God, especially in our efforts to meet the needs of the poor in our community, and when possible around the world. We strive to build a sense of community among our parishioners, with the wider Diocesan community, and with the entire family of God.

3 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The Epiphany of the Lord Today we celebrate the Epiphany or revelation of the Lord when the Magi or kings guided by a star and faith went to worship the Lord Jesus recognizing Him as God and savior of all peoples. God revealed the birth of Christ to them by a star, but they had to have faith to believe that the star would lead them to the newborn king. By revealing the Birth of Jesus to them, God revealed Jesus as the Savior of all the world. The gifts they offered also revealed their faith: frankincense which is offered to God shows their belief that this Child is God; gold revealed their belief that He is King and myrrh showed their faith that He came to die. This encounter led to great joy for them for Jesus is the joy and hope of all peoples. As St. Augustine said a long time ago "You made us to Yourself and our souls are restless until we rest in Thee." We too come to worship the Lord guided by the light of faith and in our encounter we find joy and rest for our souls. The Lord Himself said: " Come to Me and I will refresh you... and I will give you a peace that the world cannot give." It is important for our well being and peace to take the time to pray and worship the Lord recognizing Him as our Savior. It is also important to be a star that leads others to Jesus through our words and our actions. - Father Eduino T. Silveira Epiphany: Called To Pay Homage The First Reading is a foretelling of the deliverance of Israel and the worship of their God by Gentile peoples, all nations. God will fulfill His promises to them (made in Second Isaiah). God s glory will so shine on His chosen people that foreigners from all over will come in pilgrimage to Jerusalem to pay homage to the Lord. This promise is fulfilled in the arrival of the Magi. The Responsorial, Psalm 72, describes the perfect king of Israel, someone as wise as Solomon, one who secures justice for all, especially the poor, a great warrior to enlarge Israel s boundaries. Realizing no king could fulfill these high expectations, the prophets spoke of a future king, unlike any other in Israel. The arrival of the Magi to pay homage to the Baby Jesus, the Messiah, is the fulfillment of this prophecy and the inauguration of God s reign. In the Magi, the recognition of the splendor and majesty of the newborn King of Kings and the homage paid Him by all nations on earth begins. In the Second Reading, we see that the bounty of God s love extends to all peoples; this is the mystery of salvation. The New Covenant is one in which all peoples will participate in God s grace, for all are chosen by Him, without distinction. All are part of the mystical body of Christ. The Gospel continues the theme of this Sunday s Readings, the feast of Our Lord s Epiphany. Epiphany means manifestation, for we commemorate the day the glory of God s Messiah was made manifest to the pagans, (all peoples) in the personage of the Magi. Even though the murderous King Herod (whose paranoia about rivals to his throne caused him to murder a wife, three sons and a high priest brother-in-law) sought to destroy the Messiah, God s protection of His Son s mission prevailed. The Magi brought three gifts: gold, a gift one gives to a king, frankincense, what is burned to honor a god, and myrrh, an ointment used in burials. These gifts indicate not only the royalty and divinity of Jesus, but also how He would save us; our God and King would die for us on the cross.

Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh... Matthew 2:11 Notice the order of events in the Magi s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share! Financial Statements The end of year financial statements will be mailed out prior to the end of January. Please contact the Parish Office at to ensure your correct address is on file if it changed this past year. Our school maintains a separate database so please do not assume we have your current address even if you notified the school of any changes. Drivers Needed We often receive requests from our elderly parishioners (or their family or friend) seeking a ride to church. It is hard, as a Catholic community, to have to inform the caller that we cannot provide this service. We would like to create a call list of parishioners willing to assist a friend in need. We will those on the list with a candidate s name and contact information and let you work out arrangements with that individual. Please call Kelley at the Parish Office ( ) if you can help. Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary is an Association of Catholics under the powerful leadership of the Blessed Mother, Mary Mediatrix of all graces and has the approval of the Church. The objective is to glorify God through holiness of life of the members that is a fervent life of prayer and active service under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the church. The Legion of Mary is the Army of Mary to counteract the evil force of society. Our weapon is not guns and bullets. Our real weapon is True Love of God, True Love for Jesus Christ, and True Love for our Most Blessed Mother. By providing a valid CDL for use as a deposit, one of our helpful ushers can provide you with a device to help you get the most out of your attendance at Mass. You will love what you hear! Christian Brother s Placement Exam Students interested in attending Christian Brothers High School in the school year are required to take the placement exam on Saturday, January 17th.
