3 PRAYER & JOYFUL OPPORTUNITIES Receive the Holy Spirit In the First Reading, we see the fruit of the Gospel being spread; St Luke shows us the power of the Holy Spirit to convert people s hearts to Christ and His teachings. The conversion begins through St Philip, one of the seven deacons. The Samaritans who converted had mixed paganism into the Jewish faith. Here we see them accept the Gospel so joyfully that St Peter and St John are sent to pray over them so that they can fully receive the Holy Spirit. The Responsorial Psalm is a hymn of praise to God for powerfully intervening in history to deliver His people. By Jesus death and Resurrection, our Baptism became that dry passage-way God created for us through the sea of sin s death (much like the parting of the Red Sea). All are invited to make this passage to life with Jesus. His death makes us all one in Him. In the Second Reading, St Peter instructs us in a very loving and pastoral fashion. We are in turn asked to be gentle and reverent in sharing our faith with others, we can invite rather than force compliance. If then we suffer mild persecution for our belief we should see it as an honor, for Jesus suffered for us. In this way we put the flesh to death so that the Spirit will live within us. In today s Gospel we hear Jesus promise to send another Advocate, for He is the first to have interceded for us with the Father. This second Advocate is the Holy Spirit; the counselor, the advisor, the consoler, the Spirit of Truth, the Paraclete. Jesus will send us this Spirit to remind us of His teachings, to help us understand them and to give us the courage to witness to them. When we suffer for the Faith, the Spirit will give us the words we need to defend ourselves. The sign or proof that we are in the Spirit is our obedience to the commandments. Whoever obeys His teachings truly loves Him. May our love be strong enough to keep us always obedient. Interested in helping to plan the future of OLA and build a more Vibrant Parish? The Diocese and wise stewardship dictate that OLA develop a 3 to 5 year Pastoral or Strategic Plan. Father Eduino and the Pastoral Council strongly recommend that the Pastoral Plan incorporates in spirit and deed, the Vibrant Parish concept. This concept looks to build an engaged and growing parish for generations to come. Think you want to help? Please join Father Eduino and the Pastoral Council for the convening meeting of the Pastoral Plan: Strategic Planning Committee. At least one representative from each ministry is requested to attend - please let the office know the name of your representative. Individual parishioners are encouraged to attend and be a part of the Strategic Planning Committee. The first Strategic Planning Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, June 1 st at 6:30pm in St. John s Hall. If you would like further information, please contact Juan C. Yñiguez, Pastoral Council President, at or to: jcyniguez@att.net. Fireworks! Our Lady of the Assumption is blessed to have an active council of Knights of Columbus here to support our endeavors. Our council includes the St. John the Evangelist and St. Ignatius congregations at this time. Every year we sponsor scholarships to our best graduating 8 th graders that are moving on to Catholic High Schools in the Sacramento area. The funds used to accomplish this are raised by donating all the profits earned at the TNT Fireworks stand in front of the St. Ignatius church on Arden Way. You can purchase scrip in the school office to use at our Fireworks stand. 4 OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND SERVE Interview of Dean Marshall, OLA Seminarian Intern by Katherine Borg, OLA Alumni The parish has been blessed to have Mr. Dean Marshall as a seminarian intern since September. He has become a large part of the parish, and has dedicated many hours into making OLA an even more special place. Marshall was always ready to contribute to the parish, whether by coming to youth group meetings, attending mass, vocations ministry, or assisting parish staff. Marshall first discovered his calling to the church when he was twenty-one years old, although he may have had hints earlier in life. He recalls being young and visiting his father s flower shop in Downtown Sacramento, We spent a lot of time at the cathedral, you know, weddings and things like that, and there would be times when I was there that I would think to myself, Wow, it would be really cool to be a priest, said Marshall. Marshall often visited the students at our parish school. Before he entered the seminary, he was a teacher. I worked in the public school system. I worked with at risk youth, I loved doing that, said Marshall. He also worked at Saint Isidore Catholic School in Yuba City. He hopes to go back to teaching in classrooms someday as part of his ministry. Every Wednesday, Marshall went to the parish school and teachers can sign up and Marshall will prepare a lesson for them on whatever topic they were teaching. When Marshall spoke of his impression of OLA, he used one word, amazing. Marshall was appreciative of the generosity the parishioners have shown him over his time at OLA. He reflects on his time with parishioners fondly, They encouraged me in my vocation, and also challenged me in a good way, said Marshall. He knows that he will take the lessons he has learned from parishioners into his priesthood. I can t think of my vocational journey now without the people of the parish of OLA, said Marshall. The impact of our community will surely remain with him in the years to come. Marshall also kindly reflects back on his time with Father Eduino. He spoke of the wonderful examples Father has shown him about how to lead a parish and also how to be a good Christian. Father Eduino has a very deep sense of generosity and spirituality and the love of Jesus Christ, said Marshall. Mr. Marshall left us on May 15 th. He will continue on two more years in the seminary. God willing, in 2019, he will be ordained a priest. Marshall has greatly contributed his talents, intelligence, and generosity to the parish and we have been blessed to have him with us. ~ Katherine Borg, OLA Alumni Vocations Cross Prayer Campaign OLA has a Vocations Cross Prayer Campaign. Each week, a family will take home the Vocations Cross. During their week, they commit to praying for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life, as well as for our priests, seminarians, and religious in the Diocese of Sacramento. The cross will then be returned to the parish the following Friday, and presented to a new family at the Mass they normally attend. If you are interested in participating, please contact the parish office at or parish@olaparish.net. Catholic Committee on Scouting Seeks New Membership We are looking for adults active in scouting (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire, or Heritage Girls) to consider participation in the committee. 5 YOUTH Track & Field Varsity Championships: Congratulations to our team on another outstanding performance! Our boys finished in 1st place, and our girls placed 9th. OLA s Combined Team placed 2nd. Many of our athletes achieved some impressive PRs during the meet. We are proud of them all, and we thank their devoted and talented coach, Todd Chambers, for his years of work and commitment to the team. We ll miss you Todd! We had a fabulous Country Fair last weekend, which was enjoyed by our school and parish community. This annual festival may be the biggest of any school in the Sacramento Region, but it always has an intimate feel and yet very exciting for the children. What a delightful two days for all who came. Our thanks go out to our amazing Country Fair Chairs, Amy Kuzmich, Annmarie Schmidt, and Joe Ryan for their excellent leadership and organization of this huge event. Many thanks also to our sub-chairs and all of our families who contributed to this event. Congratulations to Laura Kate Holiday for her participation in the California State Science Fair, which was held April 24-25, 2017 in Los Angeles at the California Science Center. Laura placed 2nd in her division at the regional science fair at American River College. Because of her second place finish she was eligible to apply to compete at the California State Science Fair, which she did. Laura is the first OLA student to ever compete in the California State Science Fair. Congratulations to Laura, on her hard work, determination, and soaring efforts. A GIANT shout out to Abbie and Gene Totten, awesome 5th graders, and their siblings, who started the garden project this past Saturday by taking on the weeds and preparing the ground. Check out our before and after photos on our School Facebook! Next step is planting after Country Fair! The proceeds of this garden are given to our St. Vincent de Paul. Congratulations & Prayers for Our Alumni, Hannah Parulan: The St. Francis swimming team competed at the Sac-Joaquin Section Trials. I could not be more proud of my whole team, said Head Coach Richard Levin. How exciting for the Frosh/Soph group and how exciting is it to be coaching them the next three years. Seeing them in action today when it matters, they all stepped up. The group includes a lot of talented freshmen and Hannah Parulan, a sophomore, who is definitely the leader. St. Francis group advanced all three relays, posting the top times in two events and advanced 11 Troubadours into the finals on Saturday in the Frosh/Soph division. Parulan won her heat in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.88, entering Saturday as the second seed. Parulan also advanced in 100 backstroke, finishing seventh. Parulan also was in the 400 free relay 3: This excerpt was taken from the St. Francis Website. OLA is very proud of Hannah and pray for her continued success and enjoyment of her chosen sport.
