3 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR S DESK My soul rejoices in the Lord The third Sunday of Advent is called Jubilato Sunday or joy Sunday and all the readings invite us to be joyous in the Lord. St John the Baptist was sent by God to announce the coming of the Light that shines in the darkness; the darkness cannot conquer that Light. He announced that there is One among us whose sandals John was not worthy to untie, Jesus Christ Who came to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah. When Jesus appeared in the Synagogue in Nazareth He read the passage that is given us today as the first reading: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because the Lord has anointed Me; He has sent Me to proclaim glad tidings to heal.. to set people free..." Then He added: "today this scripture passage has been fulfilled." Every time we hear the Word of the Lord and believe in it we are saved. His word brings us joy and hope. St. Paul who accepted the Good News of the Gospel is a great example for us of a joyous person. Even in prison he is full of joy. That is why He challenges us to rejoice in the Lord always by being thankful, rejecting evil, and persevering in prayer awaiting in joy the coming of the Lord. True joy comes from God Who loves us. Just before He died Jesus said: "As the Father loved Me, I loved you. Remain in my love and love one another so that my joy may be in you and your joy complete. True joy then is knowing that the Lord loves us and, living in His love, loving one another as He loves us. Always, but especially during this great season of Advent let us remain in the love of the Lord and love one another as to share His joy. Let us take the time to welcome the Lord into our lives and deepen our Communion with Him through prayer and by reaching to those around us with the love of the Lord. That is why I have been encouraging us to be loving and welcoming towards all who come to our parish. People need to encounter the love of Christ in us by how we care for one another from children to the elderly. Let us pray for an attitude of welcoming. Let us express our faith in love, in service to one another to make the parish a Christian Community that welcomes and accepts the gifts of all. I am deeply grateful that many parishioners are living their faith offering their talents to continue to make our parish a loving community where all encounter the love of Christ. I encourage all parishioners to see themselves as disciples of the Lord called to build our parish as a sign of God's Kingdom among us. Feel free to offer your ideas and your gifts for the good of all. It starts by believing in the love of the Lord and remaining in Him. - Father Eduino T. Silveira Conversion Brings Joy! In the First Reading, Isaiah continues the theme of hope,m hope of fulfillment of God s promise of Israel s restoration. This will happen when God s Spirit is upon the Messiah. It will be a year of favor from the Lord (alluding to the Jubilee Year tradition, when all debts are forgiven and those in distress will be consoled). The Responsorial Psalm is actually the Magnificat (Our Lady s Canticle), from St Luke. This hymn celebrates the time of favor from the Lord, when He will raise up the lowly and topple the mighty. Jesus birth brings about this time of peace and restoration, to the earth and in our hearts. We had lost our way by sin. God reaches out to us, the lost and confused. He brings mercy and salvation through His Son, Jesus. Mary s joy pours forth in proclaiming this coming event which began in Her. The Second Reading, like the ending of most of St Paul s letters, is a collection of last minute instructions. Two of the themes found throughout this letter are joy and prayer. Joy is the sense of peace we find doing God s will, and prayer is the means of discerning His will. It is prudent to test all things, being open to God speaking in our hearts while recognizing that at the same time we must also listen to the Spirit speaking to us through the Church s Magisterium. In today s Gospel, St John helps us understand what John the Baptist s role really is. St John the Baptist is the one who calls us to convert in order to be ready for the Messiah when He comes. By his own admission, he is not the Messiah, but rather the one who points to Jesus, the true Messiah. He considers his role to be that of preparing hearts through conversion to justice and righteousness.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION Scripture Sharing for Advent, 2014 We invite you to gather on Thursday, December 18th, at 8:30am and again at 6:30pm in St. Paul s to reflect on the Sunday Scriptures. Advent is a holy time defined by a Promise that The One Who Is to Come, who Himself is the Lamb of God, born in a stable - will gather the flock, heal the brokenness, and bring just and lasting peace. We hope you can join us for this final meeting in this adult faith formation series. Praying with Scripture this week Our Eucharist this week intensifies our anticipation of how everything will be transformed when Jesus comes. This week s gospels show how these promises were realized in Jesus, who was born and empowered as Messiah to preach, teach, heal, and create the kingdom community on earth. Let us pray this week... Teach us your ways, O God. Many thanks to all of our students and their families for bringing in food for our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Gilmour and her 7th grade families for their extra effort in providing food.
