3 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Jesus Is The Vine, Source Of Love And Unity In today's Gospel Jesus says that He is the vine and we are the branches. Remaining in Him, we give much fruit, for apart from Him, we cannot do anything. As the vine He is the source of love and unity. By keepings His commandments, loving one another in sincerity as St. John says in the second reading we remain connected to Jesus and live in His love so that His joy may be in us and our joy complete. By living with faith in Him and in His love for us, the Holy Spirit fills us with the joy of true love so that we may bear fruits of love bringing the love of Jesus Christ to all especially the suffering. It was this love of the Holy Spirit that united the early disciples to one another and made them accept St. Paul who formerly was against the Christians. Now in the Holy Spirit he was accepted by the community and became one of the greatest Christians of all time. Jesus invites us to remain in Him so that we may be filled with His joy. Let us stay connected to Him by prayer, meditation and works of love. - Fr. Eduino Silveira Communion: Intimacy with Jesus In the First Reading, we see how Barnabas helps the people of Jerusalem to accept St Paul into the community of believers. The Holy Spirit was guiding the early Church, so even though St Paul encountered opposition, the message took hold and he went on to preach in Tarsus. Psalm 22 is the one Jesus quoted from the cross. Like all lamentations this one ends with verses of praise and gratitude to God for His powerful intervention. It goes on to predict that one day all peoples, to the ends of the earth, will praise God for all He has done, and all who die will also praise Him. In the Second Reading, St John is encouraging us to practice the Faith not just in word, but also in deed. He also tells us to trust in God s goodness, by placing our hearts in His, making Him the center of our being. We should live the Faith vertically and horizontally, loving God and our neighbor. In today s Gospel from St John, we are encouraged to establish an intimate relationship with God, which will enable us to find the true meaning of our lives. Jesus tells us that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, the Source of our vitality, as the vine is to the branches. As we live out our Christianity, we draw strength, life from the Vine. This intimacy is obtained from our relationship with our Eucharistic Lord, our Holy Communion with Jesus present inside us. This sacrament nourishes us so that we may be fruitful in God s love.

5 PARISH EVENTS Mother s Day Rose Sale - Volunteers Needed The Sacramento Life Center needs your help preparing roses on May 9th as well as coordinating sales on May 10th. Can you help? If you can, please call the Sacramento Life Center at The Sacramento Life Center invites you to purchase long stem roses and Mother s Day cards for the women in your life! Your purchase gives pregnant women and teens the support they need to become mothers. Unfortunately, OLA is one of the only parishes without an active Right to Life Ministry and volunteers from other parishes and the Life Center itself are usually called upon to help with this beautiful expression of love toward the special women in our lives. We urge those of you who can volunteer help us ensure that our Rose Sale is staffed with members of our parish. DIOCESAN EVENTS SB128 Follow-up Auxilliary Bishop Myron Cotta sent the following: As you know, California state legislators introduced SB128: End of Life Option Act, which (allows) physicians in our state to assist patients in committing suicide by prescribing life ending barbiturates. It was heard and passed through the Senate Health Committee on March 25th. On April 7th, it also passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee and it is now sitting at the Senate Appropriations Committee, where any probable amending may take place before it goes to the floor of the Senate. It must pass the Senate by June 8th. Meanwhile, a new bill, AB775: Reproductive Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care and Transparency Act (Reproductive FACT Act) has been proposed to require facilities to advertise that every pregnant woman has the right to have a child or have an abortion. This bill is aimed at affecting clinics and centers that hold a pro-life viewpoint. More information on this bill can be found at the Catholic Legislative Network website. Bishop Cotta asked that we share information and updates with you and encourage you to contact your representatives. The Catholic Legislative Network website is a great place to stay updated. By joining their list they will send updates regarding these bills/topics and other legislative efforts. We hope you will take an active role and help address the concerns raised by Bishop Cotta.
