As a result, we have new roofs, one parking lot with a newly regraded and finished surface, heating/air conditioning units in the classrooms, new carpet in the Life Center and Narthex, new windows in the back and side of the Church building, and many less glamorous but very important tasks making the building more aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient. More recently, we have been and are stripping/resurfacing tile floors and painting walls (see the Church calendar). All this reminds me how important it is to pay attention to the ongoing maintenance of the physical resource God has given us as we reach out in ministry and mission in the name of Jesus Christ. But this can also serve as a great reminder for all of us as to how important it is for each of us to pay attention to our spiritual maintenance. Just as we put energy, time, and resources into physical assets, we need to put energy, time, and resources into our spiritual lives. It is vital each of us invests in prayer, worship, presence in the community of faith, sharing our faith with others, studying the Scriptures, and much more as we make sure our spiritual house is in tip/top shape. The following staple items are currently needed: Canned vegetables, fruit or meat, peanut butter, cooking oil, salt and pepper, powdered milk, catsup, pancake mix and syrup, dishwashing liquid and clothes washing detergent. These items may be brought to the Food Pantry table in the narthex. Please keep in mind, any opened containers or expired items cannot be used. 3 JOIN US SATURDAY, JANUARY 20 GAME NIGHT: Join us in the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, January 20 from 5:00 to 8:00 for a fun filled evening playing board games. Tired of playing against family members? Get some great new games for Christmas and need someone to play them with? Bring some of your favorite games to share with other SUMC members. JOIN THE PRAYER TEAM 2 Timothy 1:7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. I don't make New Year's resolutions. I use to, but found that the guilt of not keeping them was no fun. Especially now that I am older, I look for balance in my life rather than resolutions. I use to be one of those women who wanted everything perfect. My house needed to be clean, my clothes washed and folded, my bills paid and my schedule in order and under my control. It all made me depressed and tired and cranky. My expectations were making me unhappy. Who exactly was I trying to impress? I was the epitome of Martha in the Martha and Mary story. A variety of things happened to make me look at the life I was leading. God is good about using the instances in your life to stop you in your tracks for a review. Now, my furniture may be dusty, my laundry basket full and my schedule out of whack but that is okay. I have reprioritized, reorganized, and recommitted myself to a life that has meaning. I want to play with my grandbabies more. I want to put my energies into building a Shepherdstown Prayer Team that is dynamic. I want to follow Jesus. Is it time to rebalance your life? Let the Prayer Team be partners with you in rebalancing your energies. Join us the third Thursday of each month in the parlor at 6:30P. Hugs to you all in 2018! Deb Kenes

6 SIDEWALK SNOW REMOVAL: If you would like to be included in an church sidewalk snow removal chain, please contact the church office. WINTER WEATHER IS UPON US! SNOW CANCELLATION PROCEDURES In the event of inclement weather, the Church Office will utilize the following options for notification of a cancellation. Sunday morning worship will not be cancelled. However, we ask you to use your own discretion in determining if the roads and sidewalks are safe for travel. When a team/committee/group meeting or group event (choir rehearsal, youth, egg making, etc.) needs to be cancelled, you will be contacted by the team/committee/group leader via a phone call, text or . All group cancellations will be at the discretion of each group leader, and he/she will be responsible for contacting the members of that group. When a weekday Church activity needs to be cancelled, (Lenten meal, Game Night, etc.), please call the Church Office at , and after five rings, you will be able to listen to an updated message concerning a cancellation, or go to the homepage on our Church Website at shepherdstownumc.org. PARKING LOT SNOW REMOVAL THIS WINTER: All parking lots will be plowed when the snow depth reaches 2 or more. In addition, we will salt both side lots, the lot across the street and the first three parking rows of the rear lot. We will salt the remainder of the rear lot if there is snow on Christmas Eve. The Trustees hope this will not inconvenience anyone and that you will use your own good judgment about parking on the rear parking lot when it snows.

Please make sure ALL kids have a Children s Church Consent Form found in the pew. They will be dismissed after the Children s sermon in the 10:45am service. VBS 2018: June 24 th -28 th, 6pm-8:30pm Please add the dates above to your calendar. It is the biggest outreach we do for the community. Even though it is still months away, please consider volunteering to lend a hand during that week. It is greatly appreciated. More info will be coming in the weeks ahead. 8 January 7, 2018 "Fusion" Youth Ministries Shawn Gray - Director youth@shepherdstownumc.org / We will begin with normal Fusion meetings next week. Also, be on the look out for a Wings Night as I suspect we will do one of those in January or February. I hope your Christmas break has been restful and I look forward in getting back into the swing of things. Conference Youth Rally Tonight 3-7!!! (No Fusion Tonight) Shepherdstown United Methodist Church is hosting a youth rally that is being programmed by our local conference. It will be a time of fun, worship, and getting closing with each other and with Jesus. All youth from 6 th grade to 12 th grade and encouraged to come and bring friends. This is a free event.
