Thomas Aquinas was an immensely influential philosopher and theologian. He was born in 1225 and died March 7,1274. He was noted as a model teacher. Additionally he wrote on Christian principles especially his book Summa Theologiae. Recently, I came across a quote from him, written over seven hundred years ago, that I thought you may want to ponder. To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible. How true. Pastor Tim

These items may be brought to the Food Pantry table in the narthex. Please keep in mind, any opened containers or expired items cannot be used. LET S CELEBRATE FAMILY PROMISE: The Mission Team is sponsoring a day to highlight Family Promise of Harrisburg Capital Region (FPHCR), a nonprofit organization that serves families who are homeless. Shepherdstown UMC partners with St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dillsburg, 4 times a year, to host the families in this program. On Sunday, February 12, 2017, Krissy Marshall, director of Family Promise, will share about Family Promise at both services. Please join us, after the second service, in the Fellowship Hall for a Mission Meal to benefit Family Promise. We will be serving: Ham, au gratin potatoes, green beans, apple sauce, tossed salad and rolls. The youth will be providing a variety of desserts. There is no set cost for the meal, however we will be accepting donations that will go to Family Promise. Let s support this important organization that helps homeless families in our community find permanent housing and employment.
4 HOW DO I GET EASTER EGGS? Yellow egg order forms are available in the Narthex or from the church office. It is helpful that you use an order form each time you need eggs. Ordering ahead ensures that you get exactly what you want because the different varieties go fast! You can pick up your eggs three different ways: 1. Thursday nights from 6:00-8:00 in Fellowship Hall (beginning 2-16) 2. Friday mornings from 9:00-noon in the Narthex (beginning 2-17) 3. Sunday mornings outside the kitchen immediately following the first or second service. (beginning 2-19) CPR CLASS OFFERED: A CPR Class for a 2 year American Heart Association Certificate is being offered on Saturday, February 26 at 10:00 AM in the Life Center at a cost of $30.00 per person. Please give consideration to taking part in this important program. Shepherdstown UMC is fortunate to have a new defibrillator in the church and it would be beneficial if church members were trained to use it. The class will include the use of the defibrillator. The class is open to adults and youth (must be at least 12). Call the church office with questions regarding registration or to sign up at Deadline to register is February 19. Payment is due with registration. Make checks payable to Shepherdstown UMC. PARKING LOT SNOW REMOVAL THIS WINTER: All parking lots will be plowed when the snow depth reaches 2 or more. In addition, we will salt both side lots, the lot across the street and the first three parking rows of the rear lot. We will salt the remainder of the rear lot if there is snow on Christmas Eve. The Trustees hope this will not inconvenience anyone and that you will use your own good judgment about parking on the rear parking lot when it snows. IT S TIME TO GET EGG-CITED! Attention all egg makers! It s time to mark your calendars. Easter is on April 16 th this year. We will be starting our 22 nd year of egg making on Tuesday, February 14 th. The Tuesday morning crew will start mixing and forming eggs at 9 am. The Thursday (beginning February 16 th ) evening crew will start at 6 pm to dip the eggs in chocolate and package them. No experience is necessary to join either group! Egg makers must wear a hat (baseball cap style) at all times so please don t forget to bring a hat with you. Sale of eggs will run from February 16 th through April 2 nd. Egg order forms will be available in the newsletter, in the Narthex, or you can order on line from the Church website. The success of this project depends on the help of the entire congregation. Please consider participating by asking your friends, neighbors and coworkers to order eggs. Questions can be directed to Ken and Haddiee Spidle at INFORMATION ABOUT EGG MAKING: On Tuesday morning, after the egg ingredients are mixed, the weighers use scales to weigh out 2 ounces of the mix, which is placed on trays to be taken out to the fellowship hall. There the shapers turn the 2 ounce ball into an egg shape! The eggs are placed on trays and taken to the refrigerator for storage. Thursday evening, we have a team of chocolate melters who use the microwave to keep our egg dippers supplied with melted chocolate. The dippers use special forks to dip the egg and place it on a tray. The full trays are refrigerated to let the chocolate harden. When the eggs are ready to be bagged, they go to the bagging table. A bagger bags the egg and passes it to a sealer who seals the bag. Other jobs involve placing the labels on the bags and counting out dozens for sale. TRUSTEE OFFICERS FOR 2017 UPDATE: At the 1/24/17 meeting of the Board of Trustees, the new officers for 2017 were elected. They are Dick Beaty: Chairperson, Darryl Kenes: Co Chairperson, and Shirley Haines: Secretary. Please update your 2017 directory accordingly, since at time of print, this election had not occurred. Thank you.

7 RENTAL PROPERTY SALE STATUS: Last September, the Church Council approved by a vote of 13-2, a motion from the Board of Trustees to sell the property at 1939 South York Street. As you know, this property, across the street from the church, was the church parsonage until March of 2012, at which time the existing parsonage was purchased. A white paper that describes the property and what has transpired since March of 2012 was included in the Newsletter in August. An updated version of the white paper is available in the Narthex. Following the Council vote, the church forwarded a copy of the approved Council vote and supporting documents to the District Office for review. We have received approval to move ahead and are now working with the District Office to schedule a Church Conference (a meeting of the congregation) to formally consider and take action on the sale. We will have an informal Q&A meeting for the congregation 2 weeks prior to the Church Conference. Please see the Proposal to Sell Rental Property flyer at the Narthex Distribution Center for more information. LENTEN ALL CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDY: You are invited to a special study! All Sunday School Classes (adult, youth, and children) will be participating in the same study during the upcoming Lenten season. We will be using The Way, Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus by Adam Hamilton. Previews including information about the study will be shared after worship service announcements and during Gathering Grounds, in the coming weeks. On March 5 th, the study will begin with Jesus Baptism and Temptation (Jordan River and Wilderness). We will then move on to the Healing Ministry (Capernaum), Proclaiming the Kingdom (The Mountains), Calming the Storm (Sea of Galilee), Sinners, Outcasts, and the Poor (Samaria), with the Final Week (Jerusalem), ending on April 16 th (Easter Sunday). Starting today, there will be sign-up sheets in each adult Sunday School classroom and in the Narthex for class participants to indicate if they want to purchase a book ($10.00), a devotional ($6.50), or both ($13.00). These choices are optional, however you may want to consider purchasing the set to study at home as a family. All orders are due February 12 th. If you are not already in a Sunday School class, you can use the sign-up sheets in the Narthex to indicate which class you want to attend during the study. (L.I.F.E., Helping Hands, Bible Explorers, or Elective) or you can indicate a new class which will meet in the Fellowship Hall. Each Sunday at 9:30, combined classes will start their session by watching the DVD presentation. The Youth, LIFE Class, and Helping Hands Class will watch in the Life Center and then go to their classrooms. The Bible Explorers, Elective Class and the new class will watch in Fellowship Hall, dispersing to their classrooms afterwards.
