1 The Shepherd s Voice The Weekly Church Newsletter of Shepherdstown United Methodist Church 1934 South York Street, Mechanicsburg, PA Church Office Hours (Mon. Fri. 8:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m.) Pastor: Donald Ciampa pastor.sumc@comcast.net Director of Youth Ministries & Worship Leader: Amanda Bressler youth.sumc@comcast.net Directors of Children s Ministries: Janice Deveney & Charlene Kapp childrens.sumc@comcast.net Administrative Asst.: Deb Buterbaugh E mail: admin.sumc@comcast.net Custodian: Wayne McFadden custodian.sumc@comcast.net Church Office: or Fax June 10, 2012 Pastor s Paragraph CHURCH with the WINDOWS OPEN As a youth, I spent several summers on my uncle s farm in Washington County. Happily, I remember church with the windows open as the fresh fragrance of newmown hay and sun-warmed strawberries filled the sanctuary. The farmers there, wearing short-sleeved shirts and nothing so foolish as a tie, were nearly as brown as the walnut pews. These good people of the earth were more aware, perhaps than are we, of their dependence upon the Creator for sunshine and rain to produce abundant crops. Likely, this is why they did not leave off attending church in the summer. Along with vacation trips, swimming, picnics and other seasonal joys, may church with the windows open (figuratively speaking) be an important part of your summer. When you are away on Sunday, attend a church wherever you are. It s a great way to meet people and to get new ideas. When you have company, bring them to worship. Surely you re not ashamed of your company or your church. When planning a Sunday outing, consider leaving right after the early service. My concern is that if worship is less important in the summer it will become so year around. The habit of regular attendance is more difficult to acquire than to lose.

UPDATED PICTURES NEEDED FOR PHOTO DIRECTORY A copy of our current photo directory has been placed on the table in the narthex. Please take a moment to see what picture we have for you or your family. If you want a more updated picture listed, just send us your current choice via e mail to admin.sumc@comcast.net or leave a photo on the church office desk. Photos can be scanned and returned to you. If there is no picture listed with your family in the directory, that means we do not have one of you. We want to have a complete and updated photo gallery for our new pastor to refer to when he arrives, July 1 st. Thank you SPECIAL LETTER RECEIVED THIS WEEK Dear Shepherdstown, We were very pleased to be notified that the mortgage has been paid off. Please prayerfully consider using your gifts/talents in this area. Flower Coordinator effective immediately or at least by fall. This responsibility includes coordinating people to remove and deliver altar flowers each Sunday (2012 is already taken care of), ordering Easter and Christmas flowers, and any other miscellaneous flower needs that might arise. We thank Lynda Bauer for filling this position the past year. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact the church office. Thanks to Shannon and Nicole Thurstin who have agreed to serve as our new communion stewards!

6 SPECIAL MUSIC FOR SUMMER 10:45 SERVICES For the summer, our choirs will be taking a very well deserved summer break. Therefore, volunteers are needed to share special music during summer services. If you re not able to commit to rehearsal and performances each week with our various choirs, this is your chance to shine for God. God wants us to share our talents and enhance the worship experiences at SUMC. Please see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside of the church office. SIGN UP FOR ALTAR FLOWERS You may order and dedicate altar flowers for a particular Sunday by completing the form for the appropriate Sunday in the Altar Flowers Sign Up Book located on the table in the narthex. The cost is $16.50 per vase. For your convenience there are payment envelopes attached to the back cover of the binder. Checks should be made payable to the church and marked altar flowers and can be dropped in a response box or left in an offering plate. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PART OF SHEPHERDSTOWN UMC s PRAYER CHAIN? Please notify the church office at admin.sumc@comcast.net if you would like to be included on our prayer chain. Whenever a prayer request comes in, you would receive an e mail to pray for that concern. This is a great way to be involved with the prayer needs at Shepherdstown UMC! The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. James 5:16 BULLETIN SPONSORS To help defray the costs of bulletins, consider sponsoring bulletins for a special event in your family. The average weekly cost is $10.00 for 8:15 and $20.00 for 10:45. On sponsored days, we will have a nice colored bulletin to share. Please see the sign up book with cost breakdown on the table in the narthex. On behalf of the worship and finance committees, we would appreciate any help that can be given to this initiative. DO YOU NEED CHURCH OFFERING ENVELOPES? If so, call the church office at and request them. They will be mailed directly to your home bi-monthly. INTERESTED IN CHURCH MEMBERSHIP? If so, simply complete the gold sheet located at the distribution center in the narthex or just talk to the pastor. DEDICATION OF SANCTUARY Today at 3 pm there will be a service to dedicate our sanctuary. Although our place of worship was consecrated when completed, it can only be dedicated when it is debt free. Since this happy situation was made possible by the Sponsler gift, we will also unveil a plaque honoring Charlotte and Bill Sponsler. You will not want to miss this historic gathering.

8 I hope to be able to invest into the lives of the students in the church and gain a deeper understanding in how the ministry functions within the church. -Victoria Tice We are overjoyed at Shepherdstown that we have the opportunity to host Victoria Tice as a summer intern. Victoria is from Middletown, Maryland and has been faithfully serving our church for the past two and half years in both the youth and children s ministry. Victoria will be a senior in Christian Ministries at Messiah College and will be using our church as her practicum. Because we are able to give this opportunity to Victoria, she will be able to spend the entire summer learning and being challenged about what it means to be in ministry. She will primarily be helping with the youth ministry, as this is her focus, but she will also be a tremendous asset to VBS and other ministries within the church. Victoria and I are going on faith that this is the right place for her this summer. Through a lot of prayer and discerning, we feel confident that God is calling her to serve and learn at Shepherdstown. Because we are going on faith, currently Victoria has no source of funding and no place to live. That is where you come in! There are three ways you can help out. The first is through prayer. Please pray for our needs, our ministries, and also Victoria s experience. The second way has been a place for her to stay and praise God as this need has been taken care of for the summer so thanks to all who have offered their homes. The third need we have is monetary. Because Victoria would normally be employed for the summer, we need to offset her expenses. We are certain God will take care of this and any help you could give us would be appreciated. All money will be given directly to Messiah College through her student account. If you would like to give, please make all checks payable to SUMC and memo it Victoria. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to ask me or Victoria. Thank you for your support. 9 Today 6/10/2012- Review Books of the Old and New Testament There will be Children s Church today for ages 3yrs-5yrs. The children will be accompanied downstairs after the children s sermon in the 10:45am service. We wish all of our kids and their families and wonderful and safe summer ahead. On weeks where you might not be vacationing, don t forget Sunday School and church are still in full swing, and we d love to have you worship with us. DONUTS FOR DAD S NEXT SUNDAY: Calling all dads, grandpa s, or other important males in our kids lives to be part of our annual Donut s for Dad s Day. Please sign up in the Life Center or Children s Center ASAP. This is a combined event for both the youth and children s departments. We look forward to seeing you and having you join in the fun! Also, there will be NO Elementary Childrens Church during the summer like in past years. It gives an opportunity for these kids to worship with their parents through the summer. Upcoming events: 6/17-9:30-10:30am- Donuts for Dad s. Sign up sheet to come 6/24-6/28-6:00-8:30pm- VBS 7/1- VBS service- we will need kids to participate in both the 8:45am and 10:45am services. 7/13-9:30am- Kids Club to Mission Central 7/20- Kids Club to Ronald McDonald House- Time to be determined. SKY UPDATE: TShirts($8.00), CD s($6.00), and Bandanas($2.00) will be for sale today in the Narthex. We would encourage you to purchase these items early, as when VBS draws closer, our quantities dwindle. Volunteer shirts($5.00) will also be for sale in the Narthex.

10 This year s Operation Kid to Kid project for VBS is sponsoring mosquito clips on behalf of Netting Nations. This organization will provide mosquito nets for areas in other countries where malaria is extremely rampant, and taking the lives of many children and adults. You can sponsor a clip for $1.00 in the Narthex after the service. All collected money will go towards helping this cause. Our Donation Board is in the Narthex! Please stop by, and take a look, and see if there is something you can donate to help lessen our costs for VBS. Just take the slip with you, and return it with the item to the Children s Center. Thank you for supporting us in this way! Please keep us in prayer As the week of VBS draws closer, many last minute details need to be handled. Please pray for the strength of the staff, as well as, all the volunteers who have signed up to help this year. But, most importantly, pray for the kids that will attend VBS. Our hope is that through songs, games, crafts, and bible stories, God will touch every child s life in some way.
