One of the ministries here at Shepherdstown Church is known as the Prayer Shawl Ministry. To date at least one hundred (100) shawls and baby blankets have been created and distributed to those who need. The persons who make this incredible ministry possible are known as the Caring Hands of Shepherdstown. This group meets every other Tuesday to knit or crochet prayer shawls and baby blankets. Each new prayer shawl and baby blanket begins first with prayer and blessing for the person who will be the recipient. These prayers and blessings continue throughout the creation of the shawl or blanket. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered in our community worship before the shawl or blanket is sent on its way. Shawls and blankets are given to those who may be sick, shut in, new mothers/babies, college students, or military personnel away from home, etc. You can be a part of this ministry as we wrap loved ones (known and unknown) with prayers, blessings, and loving comfort from God during their time of need. Knitting needles, crochet hooks, yarn, and patterns with easy instructions are provided. The Caring Hands of Shepherdstown welcomes you to join in by joining them the next time they meet (check calendar), or contact the Church Office at Keeping people wrapped in prayer. Pastor Tim

Church Council members are encouraged to attend this brief meeting to care for a couple of time sensitive matters. GRADUATION CELEBRATION FOR EDWARD AND VICTORIA Join us May 5 th as we celebrate the graduation of Edward House and Victoria Tice. Both Edward and Victoria will be graduating from Messiah College on May 18 th. Edward has served in our music ministry and Victoria has served in our youth and children ministries. On May 5 th, both Edward and Victoria will be at the 8:15am and 10:45am services and we will celebrate them after each service in the Life Center with light refreshments. Come greet them with congratulations! A few of you have asked about gifts. It is not necessary, but if you would like to participate in a monetary gift please place your gift in an envelope, in the offering plate labeled Victoria or Edward. You may see Amanda Bressler for details. CHILDREN S CHURCH TIDBIT: Each Sunday during the 10:45 service, if you do not accompany your child downstairs for Children s Church, you must complete a Children s Church Consent Form (requests simple contact information) found in the pews. Please have your child bring the completed card with them during the children s sermon and the card will be collected by the teacher downstairs.

EASTER EGG SALES UPDATE Egg sales this year were very good. The profit for sales is $9, Thanks again to all the helpers who participated in the egg project. SHEPHERDSTOWN UMC SPRING YARD SALE Saturday, May 18th, beginning at 7 a.m. has been set aside for a church sponsored Yard Sale. Sign up sheets will be posted on the bulletin boards at the church entrances soon to register your name and the number of spaces desired. ($10.00 each). Invite your friends and neighbors to reserve a space (get your whole block!!). ECUMENICAL CHOIR CONCERT COMING UP Plan to attend the 26 th Annual Ecumenical Choir Concert on Sunday, May 19 th at 3 p.m. at St. Joe s Catholic Church on Simpson Ferry Rd. This concert will feature 125 voices from 35 area churches. Musical Director is Keith T. Roden and Accompanist Janis Martinez. A free will offering will benefit New Hope Ministries. 4 GIANT CARD FUND RAISER UPDATE Since October of 2001, we have sold $709, worth of certificates with a profit to the church of $35, Proceeds benefit the church s Improvement Fund. Purchase your cards immediately following the worship service or on weekdays from 9 am 12 noon in the church office. Catch the Sprit and celebrate the 2013 Confirmation Class with a fellowship meal. The food will be prepared and provided by the Cultivate and Nurture Ministry Team. Look for more details in May! KIWANIS PANCAKE BREAKFAST Saturday, May 4 from 7-11 am, the Upper Allen Kiwanis Club will sponsor a pancake breakfast here at Shepherdstown UMC in Fellowship Hall. Proceeds will benefit local Boy Scouts, Meals on Wheels, New Hope Ministries and local youth activities. Adults - $5.00 and children $3.50. Tickets can be purchased from Ted Trimmer or at the breakfast. Please come and bring a friend! SAFE RIDING BIKE RODEO Sponsored by the Girl Scouts and SUMC. May 4th, Rain or Shine. There will be two time options: 9:00-10:00 am or 10:00-11:00 am at Shepherdstown United Methodist Church in the parking lot. There is no cost but registration is requested. Registration forms can be found at the distribution center in the narthex or online at We are also looking for adult volunteers to help register and supervise. GRADUATES TO BE RECOGNIZED On Sunday, June 2nd we will be recognizing our students who are graduating from High School, College, or another form of higher education. If you have a graduate in your family this year, please submit the student s name, address, school and degree earned, to the church office by May 19th. 5 SAMARITAN S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX MINISTRY The items we are collecting for the month of April are small toys for 5-8 year olds. This includes yoyos, jump ropes, kazoos, harmonicas, small Etch-a-Sketch, slinky, toy jewelry, flashlights. Remember that these items will be fitting in a shoebox with other items. Donations of shoeboxes are also important and may be dropped off in the Elective Classroom in the Fellowship Hall. We also ask that you pray for the children who are receiving the boxes that they will experience the love of Christ through us. FOOD PANTRY COLLECTION FOR NEW HOPE MINISTRIES This month s Food Pantry Collection is for New Hope Ministries. The following staple items are needed: canned meat, beef stew, canned fruit, graham crackers, pudding, pancake mix, saltines, fruit juice, broth, flour, cooking oil, mayo, ketchup, mustard, manwich, instant potatoes, scalloped potatoes, pancake syrup, salad dressing, canned icing, stewed tomatoes, tomato paste. These items can be left in the food pantry basket on the table in the narthex. Please keep in mind, any opened containers or expired items cannot be used. The year 2013 is the 150 th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The group will visit battlefield locations where significant events took place on July 2 nd and 3 rd, For Day 2, the tour explores a series of massive Confederate attacks on each flank of the Union line. The attacks include desperate struggles in the Pear Orchard, Wheatfield and Little Round Top on the Union left flank and on Cemetery Hill and Culp s Hill on the Union right. For Day 3, Pickett s Charge often termed the high water mark of the Confederacy, is analyzed. Personalities described include Confederate commanders Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Garnett, Armistead, Oates and Barksdale, and Union commanders Meade, Sickles, Hancock, Warren, Vincent, Chamberlain, Greene, Slocum, and Cushing. Jenny Wade becomes the only civilian casualty of the battle. Everyone planning to go on the tour should meet in the church parking lot at 9 am. Lunch will be at General Pickett Buffet in Gettysburg. The cost for the buffet will be $10.00 per person including gratuity. The group will return to the church by 3:30. A sign up sheet is on the SOS bulletin board in the upper rear hallway. Deadline to sign up is April 28 th. SENIORS OF SHEPHERDSTOWN Ligonier Highland Games, Allegheny Portland Railroad and Horseshoe Curve Field Trip, led by Steve Runkle Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21, 2013

7 The Seniors of Shepherdstown will meet at the church at 8 am on Friday, Sept. 20 to travel to and tour the Hollidaysburg Canal Park, the historic Allegheny Portage Railroad and Horseshoe Curve. The group cost of the Allegheny Portage Railroad outdoor exhibit is $4.00 per person but each American the Beautiful Senior Pass is honored for four free admissions. The senior group cost of the horseshoe Curve Museum and incline is $5.00 per person. The Hollidaysburg Canal Park is free. Lunch will be at a fast food restaurant near Hollidaysburg and dinner will be at Ryan s Buffet Restaurant in Johnstown, PA Overnight accommodations on Friday night will be at the Econo Lodge in Johnstown at a room rate (double occupancy) of $59.96 plus tax for one queen bed or $63.96 for two double beds. A complementary hot and cold breakfast is included. This rate is a group rate for 20 rooms. On Saturday, the group will attend the Ligonier Scottish Highland Games at Idlewild Park in Ligonier. This event is held rain or shine. The senior group admission cost to the Highland Games is $12.00 per person, in advance. The Ligonier Highland Games consist of competitions of over 20 bagpipe bands, highland heavy athletic events, highland dancing, Scottish dog show, border collie sheep-herding demonstration, Parade of Clans (Janey will be in her Plaid), Scottish musical entertainment, Scottish food and apparel vendors, Scottish country dance demonstration, and usually Scottish harp and fiddling competitions. You will be on your own at the Highland Games and may choose which events you would like to attend. Lunch on Saturday will be at one of the food stands throughout the park. About 3:00 pm, the group will assemble for travel home. The group plans to return to the church by about 6 pm on Saturday. Deadline to sign-up is July 21 st. Parents, don t forget to fill out the Children s Church card located in the pew. Don t Forget to sign up for the Bike Rodeo this week! MOTHER S DAY IS COMING - MUFFINS FOR MOMS/GRANDMOMS TIME AGAIN. Youth and Children make sure the special ladies in your life sign up to come with you on May 12th from 9:30am-10:30am in the Life Center. Sign-up sheets are in the Children s Center, Narthex, and Life Center. Also, on May 10 th, there will be a KIDS CLUB from 6pm-8pm for all kids to come out and make muffins. Sign-up sheets for that are in the Childrens Center. VBS NEWS 1. Still searching for an additional helping hand in the Nursery the week of VBS. The nursery is OPEN for children of the volunteers ONLY! 2. Still in need of about 108 SIZE 3 baby food jars. 3. Large rolls of Gray duct tape. 4. Boxes of ½ size gluedots.
